The dragonfly is one of the most ancient insects, the species diversity of which includes about 6,500 different representatives. The name appeared as a result of the fusion of several Old Slavic words, which translated mean “fidget” and “jump”, which fully correspond to the characteristics of the insect.
You can meet a dragonfly in the children's cartoon series "The Adventures of Luntik and His Friends", as well as in the popular fable by I.A. Krylov "The Dragonfly and the Ant". Using the step-by-step process of doing the work, as well as templates for copying, you can recreate the drawing of cartoon characters or depict a real insect.
What do you need to draw a dragonfly?
To draw a dragonfly, you will need the following set of tools:
- simple pencil;
- white sheet of paper;
- ruler;
- eraser, sharpener.
You can also color the finished template with a simple pencil, watercolors or gouache, colored pencils or felt-tip pens.
When doing the work, it is best to use several pencils with soft and hard leads. Soft pencils allow you to draw barely noticeable lines, which are convenient to use when preparing a template. Hard pencils are suitable for drawing details on an already finished drawing, as well as for shading.
Step by step instructions on how to draw a dragonfly with a simple pencil
Dragonfly (a drawing for children is done with a simple pencil) is an insect that can be depicted using geometric figures. To complete the work, you will need a ruler, a compass, and a standard set.
Body and head
You need to start drawing the dragonfly's body and head with general outlines.
Sequence of work execution:
- On a clean sheet of paper, use a ruler to draw a slanted line. It should be proportionate to the future insect.
- Starting from the lower end of the drawn line, draw a thin long oval – the body of the dragonfly. It is important that the inclined line draws the middle of the oval.
- Draw a circle at the top. You can use a compass to do this.
- The circle should intersect with the oval, and its edge should reach almost the center of the circle.
An example of the resulting image can be viewed further in the article. The elements will form the body and head of the insect.
Wings and head elements
Drawing the wings and head elements is a fairly simple job. The elements are similar to each other.
Stages of implementation:
- The wings are located next to the dragonfly's head. You can draw them using the principles of drawing the number "8".
- If you look closely, you can see that the wings, located diagonally from each other, form a "figure eight" with elongated links. Guided by these rules, you can draw neat wings. In this case, the bottom row should be slightly larger than the top.
- Draw the dragonfly's antennae with arched lines pointing in opposite directions. At the end of each is a small circle.
- At the top of the insect's head, draw 2 small circles, and inside them, another one of a smaller diameter.
- At the bottom, add a mouth – a small arched line.
Using an eraser, you need to erase the inclined line along which the body and head of the insect were drawn.
Detailing of wings and body
Detailing the wings and body of the dragonfly is a process of adding veins and additional elements.
Stages of implementation:
- Draw a small arced line at the top. From this line draw several short lines that connect to each other.
- In this way, dilute the remaining 3 wings.
- Visually divide the dragonfly's body into 7 equal parts. Separate the parts from each other with short arched lines, delimiting the colored parts.
The resulting template can be shaded. The wing area should be highlighted with a barely noticeable shadow, and the body and head should be painted with a more active color.
Pattern variations
Dragonfly (a drawing for children should be easy to do) is a fairly popular insect, which often acts as a character in various cartoons, children's fairy tales and fables. You can paint the insect with paints (gouache, watercolor or oil), as well as colored pencils and felt-tip pens. The result depends on the application features and the structure of the material.
With colored pencils
You can draw and color a dragonfly with colored pencils. This option is suitable for younger children, as the pencil is convenient to use and does not stain the surrounding space.
Stages of work execution:
Description of the stage | Image |
Draw a rectangle on the top of a clean sheet of paper. Make the corners more rounded to form the center of the insect's body. | ![]() |
Add a semi-oval to the top of the drawn oval. Draw a figure resembling a triangle with rounded corners at the bottom. This way you can get most of the insect's body. | ![]() |
Add a long, narrow oval to the bottom element. The shapes should touch and form a solid dragonfly body. | ![]() |
Attach the first pair of wings to the top element. In this version, the wings look more complicated than in the first one. Using the figure eight pattern, you can make a base and then adjust the lines to achieve a similar result. | ![]() |
Draw the second pair of wings in a different direction. You can see that the elements begin with drawing an inclined line, and then form an oval. Closer to the body, arched elements appear, which complete the drawing of the detail. | ![]() |
Duplicate the upper lines of the wings, add 2 circles to the upper part of the dragonfly's head. | ![]() |
Add additional body elements: horizontal lines on the tail, as well as a forked tip. | ![]() |
Using short lines, draw the veins on the insect's wings. The drawing can be anything. | ![]() |
The resulting drawing can be colored with colored pencils.
Stages of coloring the finished image:
- Using a green pencil, color the wings of the dragonfly. Do not press too hard on the pencil to achieve a translucent effect.
- Using a felt-tip pen, pen or pencil (pressing harder on the pencil tip) in green, fill in the veins and upper edges of the wings.
- Use a black pencil to color the dragonfly's eyes.
- Color the insect's head and body with a blue pencil. Do not press too hard on the pencil.
- Using more active movements, paint every 2nd element of the body, starting from the head.
You can choose the color scheme yourself.
Gouache
Dragonfly (a drawing for children is done with gouache) is a bright and memorable insect. You can meet it near water, as they are born in reservoirs.
You can draw a dragonfly in the following way:
- Draw a small circle on a sheet of paper. You can use a compass or any small-diameter round object for this.
- Add an elongated oval to the lower right part of the drawing. The element acts as the insect's thorax.
- Attach a larger oval to the bottom of the oval. Sharpen the bottom of the element. This detail will form the insect's tail.
- The middle element of the dragonfly will act as a base. Attach the wing to the right side. It should be similar in size to the tail. The wing should widen closer to the middle, and then smoothly narrow, turning into an oval.
- Using a similar technology, form the wing on the opposite side.
- Draw the lower wing under the upper one. It is more rounded and smooth. At the same time, the points of contact should not affect the tail area.
- Draw a similar wing on the opposite side.
- In the upper part of the middle of the dragonfly's body, draw 2 curved lines - the insect's legs. Using parallel lines, give volume to the element of the drawing.
- Use semi-ovals to depict the dragonfly's eyes, located at the top of the piece.
- Draw the veins on the wings with zigzag lines. For convenience, you can draw a long line in the middle of the wing, and then short lines diverging on both sides. Divide the body into 3 parts with arched lines.
- The tail is also divided into several parts using arched lines.
The finished drawing can be colored with paints, having first outlined the details with a felt-tip pen or marker.
When working with gouache, you must adhere to the following recommendations:
- apply thin layers of paint so that the gouache does not crack after drying;
- For a rich image and long-term preservation of the painting, it is best to cover the finished drawing with varnish;
- Store the finished image at a level of relative humidity, away from direct sunlight.
You will also need brushes for the paint. It is better to have several types of brushes so that you can paint even the smallest details.
Painting a dragonfly is quite simple:
- Using a palette or a small sheet of paper, mix green and red paint until you get a swampy shade. Dilute the resulting mass with water until it reaches a creamy consistency.
- Paint the dragonfly's wings with the finished shade, applying the paint in a thin layer.
- Paint the dragonfly's head blue. Paint the first stripe, located under the head, with a bluish tint. Paint the body so that the colors alternate.
- Mix black and white paint in small quantities, then apply the mixture to the semi-ovals that form the insect's eyes. Paint the dragonfly's legs with black paint.
- Using a thin brush, paint the outline of the wings and the veins inside them with green color.
Dry the finished image. If desired, you can color the surrounding space.
Watercolor
Dragonfly - drawing for children, which in a more picturesque version is obtained if you use watercolors. Watercolor paints and pencils allow you to create a light effect, a variety of colors and transitions.
Stages of work execution:
- Draw a circle on a sheet of paper. To do this, use a compass or a small, round object.
- From the lower semi-oval, having determined the middle, draw an arched line with a bend to the right side.
- From the top of the circle draw 2 curved lines, forming the antennae of the dragonfly. Outline the eyes of the insect with semi-ovals.
- Attach an oval to the bottom of the head (approximately the same size as the head), and pull the bottom part into a long, elongated tail.
- Draw an oval figure inside the oval body.
- From the previously drawn body, draw the wings. The upper wing resembles an elongated oval, the back one is smaller in size, the same in shape.
- The lower wing is created by drawing a long arc and a curved line.
- Draw the wings on the other side in the same way.
- Draw curved veins inside each wing.
Dragonfly drawing for children step by step, instructions. - The finished drawing can be colored.
- Apply blue paint to a fluffy brush. Spread it in a translucent layer over the area of the wings.
- Using the same brush (wash first), paint the head and body area with pink paint.
- Use watercolour pencils to draw on the already dry surface. Use a blue pencil to draw the outlines of each wing, as well as the veins, with wide lines. Thickly paint the dragonfly's eyes.
- Use a pink or red pencil to paint the outlines of the body and head, carefully paint the antennae and the element on the abdomen of the insect.
- Using a thin brush and a small amount of water, slightly blur the edges of the pencil lines. Do not blur the lines of the veins and tendrils.
The finished image can be left as is, or additional elements can be added around the insect.
In profile
You can draw a dragonfly not only "from above", but also in profile. This option is quite simple, but it can also be used in the context of various images.
Stages of work execution:
- On a clean sheet of paper, draw a horizontal line of medium size, maybe slightly curved.
- On the left side, draw a small circle by hand. Step back a small distance and add an oblong oval, the width of which is equal to the 2 circles drawn earlier.
- Connect the side of the wide oval with the smaller oval.
- From the oval that forms the insect's chest, draw 2 inclined lines upwards. They will become the basis for drawing the dragonfly's wings.
- Visually divide the insect's head into 3 parts. 2/3, starting from the left part, separate using a vertical line. From the resulting straight line, draw a semi-oval that repeats the curves of the head.
- In the small space between the head and chest, place the dragonfly's legs - as shown in the picture.
- Draw the remaining line, adding a rounded tip to form the insect's tail.
- Draw an eye inside the head. It should be located on a vertical line.
- Draw the wings in the form of arched lines.
- Make the dragonfly's legs more voluminous and also fill the empty space between the insect's head and body.
- Draw arched lines across the entire surface of the dragonfly's body and add a thin tail.
- Draw the far wing of the dragonfly, and also add veins all over the surface.
- Use the eraser to remove unnecessary elements.
- Using a simple pencil, slightly darken the lower part of the insect.
- You can add a few elements to the sheet.
- Use a yellow pencil to color the dragonfly's wings. Using markers or gel pens to match, draw the outline and veins inside the wings to create contrast.
- Use a black pen or felt-tip pen to color the insect's eye and legs.
- Color the selected area inside the head with a blue pencil. The space around it is green.
- Using this color scheme, paint the body and tail of the dragonfly.
You can use green, brown and blue pencil to color the reeds and water in the background.
When working with colored pencils, it is recommended to adhere to the following guidelines:
- for convenience, you need to hold the pencil with 3 fingers;
- you need to fill in the round elements with one movement. Do not lift your hand from the paper, carefully drawing the line;
- Rectangular shapes are drawn with stops at the corners;
- You can also use various shading techniques to make the drawing textured;
- Colored pencils can be layered on top of each other. This way you can achieve not only a more saturated shade, but also mix several colors.
Using these recommendations, you can add color to any drawing.
Examples of images for copying, tips for beginners
The process of drawing with a child requires attentiveness and accuracy.
When performing work, it is recommended to use the following tips:
- familiarize yourself in advance with all the materials needed to complete the work;
- show the process of drawing in practice, as children copy adults;
- use templates to draw images;
- studying various lines and figures. Independent study of various elements allows the child to form a complete drawing from them in the future;
- for the sake of interest, use characters from cartoons or fairy tales, draw analogies between the characters and insects, animals, plants;
- An important stage in drawing is the discussion of the created image. It is necessary to focus on how the child sees this or that creature and why;
- Not every child is able to draw a picture that exactly matches the template. In such cases, it is necessary to take into account the child's opinion, as well as his vision of the world.
Also, you shouldn't force your child to draw. There are other types of leisure that develop thinking, fine motor skills, and reveal creative potential.
Dragonflies are one of the most ancient insects, which appeared about 350 million years ago. The first representatives of this species lived at the same time as dinosaurs, and also differed in size (the wingspan could reach 80 cm). It is believed that these amazing insects can develop a speed of up to 96 km / h. Drawings, as well as templates for children to copy can be found in the article.
