The ushanka hat has not gone out of fashion since the middle of the 20th century. Men wore it 50 years ago, but now the headdress is considered universal, so it suits women too. Hats of this model are usually more expensive than simple headdresses and often have the same design. You can knit an ushanka yourself, making it in a suitable color, texture and size.

Types of women's hats with earflaps

In 2021-2022, earflaps remain in fashion. The trend is for headwear models with both long and short ears that have ties. Knitted hats with fur trim and pompoms do not lose popularity. Women's ushankas are decorated with arans, jacquard and openwork patterns.

For decoration, they use a 2-color knitting technique or combine more shades. They embroider hats, sew on beads, and glue rhinestones.

Selecting yarn for a hat with earflaps

To knit a hat you need warm yarn that does not wear out and can be washed well. Natural wool thread or a mixture with acrylic is most often used (it is better if the wool is at least 70% so that the ushanka remains warm). Alpaca and mohair yarn are also used.

You cannot knit hats from itchy yarn that will irritate the scalp and forehead; for sensitive skin, yarns made from:

• cashmere;
• wool;
• alpacas;
• merino.

Merino threads are the least warm of all, so they are suitable only for knitting hats for windless weather with moderate frost. The thicker the threads, the wider the distance between the loops, which means that the headdress will be blown through in the wind. In this case, it is better to make a double earflaps and a fur lining.

Approximate calculation of yarn:

For a hat without a flap, knitted with the front surface	About 100g of threads (density: 250-400m per 100g)
For a hat with a pattern of braids or arans, knitted with a rib band	Not less than 150 g of threads (density: 250-350 m per 100 g)
For hats made of thick yarn	You will need 200-250g of thread (density: 100m per 100g or more)

Master class on knitting a hat with earflaps using an elastic band with long ears

The earflap hat with knitting needles for women in this version is knitted with a rib pattern. For work, you need to select yarn that will consist of acrylic and wool in equal proportions.

The master class describes the algorithm for knitting a hat with earflaps using materials and tools:

• Mammola yarn (50% wool, 50% acrylic, 30 m/50 g), total 250 g;
• knitting needles No. 10;
• hook #10.

Knitting density is 10x10 P = 12 cm².

Making ears

Knitting of the headdress begins with the ears according to the pattern (see below).

The diagram shows only the front rows, the back rows are repeated according to the pattern (over IP - IP, and over LP - LP).

Knitting algorithm:

1. Cast on 6 sts.
2. Knit the first eyelet according to the pattern, adding 1 st in each front row after removing the KrP.

Knitting a hat

The base of the hat is knitted by connecting the parts:

• Before the first eyelet, make 2 yarn overs on the knitting needles, knit the eyelet according to the pattern, make 26 yarn overs and knit the loops of the second eyelet. Connect the first and last loops of the row into a ring. There should be 56 sts in the row.

• Distribute the loops: knit 2 LP, 14 P according to the pattern, 26 P with a 2x2 elastic band, and again 14 P according to the pattern. Knit the headdress in a circle 26 R.
• In the 27th row in the elastic, knit every 2 sts together, and in the “braid” pattern, perform decreases according to the pattern diagram. There should be 42 sts left in the row.

To decorate the hat, you need to crochet a border along the bottom edge using the crayfish step technique.

1. Cut 12 strands 35 cm long.
2. Fold 6 pieces in half and tie with a separate thread along the fold line.
3. Tie a braid and secure the bottom with a knot.
4. Do the same with the other 6 pieces of yarn.
5. Sew or tie the braids to the ears of the headdress.

For decoration, you can make a large pompom and sew it to the top of the hat with earflaps.

Ushanka with pompom and braid pattern

To knit this earflap hat model you will need the following materials and tools:

• Drops Nepal yarn (65% wool, 35% alpaca, 75 m per 50 g);

• knitting needles No. 5;
• hook #10.

The knitting density is 17 sts per 10 cm. The loops are calculated for a head circumference of 52-56 cm.

Patterns used

A knitted hat with earflaps (for women who are not experienced in knitting, this master class is suitable due to the simplicity of the patterns) is knitted with the following patterns:

• Garter stitch. When knitting in a circle, the rows alternate: even rows are knitted as RP, odd rows - LP. When knitting with turning rows, all loops are performed as LP.
• Braids (done according to the pattern). In the picture, the empty square is the LV in the front rows, the WP in the back rows. The diagonal lines indicate the pattern itself: remove 2 P to an additional needle behind the work, knit the next 2 LP, remove 2 P from the additional needle back to the working one.

Tip: when making increases, yarn over the working needle, and in the next row, knit the empty loop as a front loop behind the back wall so that the hole is not visible in the finished fabric.

Step-by-step instructions for knitting ears

Step-by-step description of the work:

• Cast on 8 sts.
• 1 P (wrong side): all loops as LP. Knit all odd rows without changes.
• 2 R (front side): perform all LP. On 2 sides from the edge make ND (after the 2nd P from the beginning and before the penultimate loop in the row. Increases are made when knitting in all rows of the front side of the fabric (even), until there are 16 P on the needles. Then start knitting the pattern.
• Front side: 2 LP, 2 IP, 1 LP, ND, 1 LP, ND, 4 IP, ND, 1 LP, ND, 1 LP, 2 IP, 2 LP. You should have 20 sts.
• Back side: 4 LP, 4 IP, 4 LP, 4 IP, 4 LP.
• Front side: 2 LP, 2 IP, pattern according to the scheme (total 4 P), 4 IP, pattern, 2 IP, 2 LP.

• At a height of 4 cm after the second and before the penultimate loop in the row, make 1 ND. Increases are knitted as IP on the front side, as LP - on the back side.
• Increases are repeated at a fabric height of 6 cm. There should be 24 sts. In this row, knitting of the first ear of the headdress is finished.
• The second eye is knitted in the same way.

When both parts are knitted, the loops are not closed, leaving the parts on separate knitting needles.

Knitting the main part of the hat

When the 2 ears are ready, they need to be connected:

• On circular needles, cast on 2 sts, knit the loops of the 1st ear, cast on another 22 sts, knit all the loops of the 2nd ear, cast on another 2 sts. You should have 74 sts in a row.
• Place a marker in the middle of the back of the hat. The next row will start from this mark.
• The next 4 rows at the front and back of the hat are knitted with garter stitch, and in place of the ears, the braid pattern continues.

• Perform increases: 2 IP, ND, 1 LP, ND, 1 LP, 4 IP, braid pattern, 4 IP, braid pattern, 4 IP, 1 LP, ND, 1 LP, ND.
• Next, perform the rapport 4 times: 4 IP, ND, 1 LP, ND, 1 LP.

For decoration, a pompom is sewn onto the earflaps. Its optimal diameter is 5-6 cm.

Ushanka with imitation fur

A knitted hat with earflaps (for women, it is better to choose neutral-colored yarn that will go with any outerwear: beige, black, dark blue, white) is knitted from 2 parts: outer and inner. Due to the double thickness, the headdress is suitable for frosty weather: up to -20 °C.

To work you will need:

• 100 g Eskimo yarn (100% wool 50 m/50 g);
• 150 g of Furlana fur yarn from Alize (45% wool, 55% acrylic, 40 m/100 g);
• knitting needles No. 7 and 9.

The calculation of yarn and number of loops is made for knitting a hat with earflaps for a head circumference of 56-58 cm.

Knitting the outer hat

The outer part of the ushanka is knitted from Eskimo yarn:

1. For the left ear, cast on 5 sts.
2. Back: Work a row of WS, making 1 WS on each side.
3. On the front side, knit all loops as if they were LP.
4. Continue knitting, making 2 increases in rows 3 and 7.
5. Next, make 1 ND only on the right in rows 9, 13, 17. You should get 14 P.
6. Make the second eyelet symmetrically, making increases in rows 9, 13, 17 from the left.

Let's start knitting the lapel:

1. Cast on 28 sts onto the needles.
2. Back side: all LP are performed.
3. Continue working in stockinette stitch, adding 1 st on each row on both sides until there are 30 sts on the needles.
4. Knit 16 rows of 30 sts in stocking stitch without changes.

Next, assemble the outer parts of the earflaps:

• Knit all the loops of the right ear, the flap and the left ear on circular knitting needles, gathering all the parts in one line, add 6 sts to the knitting needles. You should get 64 sts in the work.
• Knit with the front surface for 10 cm.
• Divide all loops into 4 parts and place markers.

• In each row, make 4 UB, knitting 2 sts together before each marker placed.
• Continue decreasing until there are 8 sts left in the work.
• Thread the thread through the remaining 8 sts, pull them together and secure the thread.

Inner hat

The inner fur part of the hat is made from Furlana yarn:

• For the left ear, cast on 3 sts.
• Back: Work a row of WS, making 1 WS on each side.

When the ears and the lapel are ready, all the parts are combined:

1. Knit all the loops of the right ear, the flap and the left ear on circular knitting needles, collecting the parts in a row, adding 4 sts. You should get 40 sts in the work.
2. Continue knitting with the front surface 10 cm in height.
3. Divide all loops into 4 parts and place markers.
4. In each row, make 4 UB, knitting 2 sts together before each marker placed.
5. Continue decreasing until there are 8 sts left in the work.
6. Thread the thread through the remaining 8 sts, pull them together and secure the thread.

Assembling the parts and finishing the work

To assemble a women's hat with earflaps, knitted with knitting needles from 2 parts, you will need fur thread and a crochet hook:

• Place the fur hat into the outer piece and pin the edges together for convenience.

• The edges of the headdress are sewn together using the edge loops and a crochet hook.

In the 2021-2022 seasons, coarse knitting will be in fashion. It is done in a casual style and is suitable for women under 40. Thanks to its universal style, such a headdress can be combined with sportswear and classic clothes.

To work you will need:

• 250 g of Il Golfone Melange yarn (100% merino wool);
• shuttle and circular knitting needles No. 4.

Since the threads are thick, they will make a dense hat with earflaps, which will not need to be supplemented with a lining or a second layer.

Knitting ears

A knitted hat with earflaps for women is knitted with ears:

• Cast on 6 sts.
• 1 R: knit all stitches as if to RS. Turn work.
• 2 R: 1 LP, ND, 4 LP, ND, 1 LP. Turn work.
• 3 R: Work all stitches as LP. Turn work.
• 4 R: 1 LP, ND, 6 LP, ND, 1 LP. Turn work.
• 5 R: make all loops as LP. Turn the fabric.
• 6 R: 1 LP, ND, 8 LP, ND, 1 LP. Turn work.

• 7 R: Work all stitches as LP. Turn knitting.
• 8 R: 1 LP, ND, 10 LP, ND, 1 LP. Turn work.
• 9 R: all stitches are knit. Turn the work.
• 10 R: 1 LP, ND, 12 LP, ND, 1 LP. Turn work.
• 11 R: knit all LP, turn the fabric.

The second ear is knitted in the same way. If you need to make the parts longer, you can add the required number of rows without adding.

Knitting the base of the headdress

To knit the base of the ushanka, you need:

1. Cast on 8 sts on circular needles, transfer all the loops of the right ear from the shuttle needle to the common needle, cast on another 20 sts, remove the loops of the left ear and cast on another 8 sts.
2. Knit 13 cm high with stocking stitch: alternate row LP, row IP.
3. To form the crown, begin to make decreases. 1 KR, then repeat until the end of the row *6 LP, 2 P together with a tilt to the right, 2 LP, 2 P together with a tilt to the left, 6 LP*, 1 KR.
4. Continue decreasing until there are 8 sts left on the needles.
5. Pull the loops together with thread, secure and hide the end of the yarn inside the hat.
6. Cast on 20 sts from the free bottom edge of the hat between the ears.
7. Without decreasing, knit the flap of the hat with stocking stitch to the desired height.

Decorate the ears with braids:

1. The yarn is cut into 1 m lengths. A total of 16 pieces are made for one side.
2. The threads are folded in half.
3. The pieces are threaded through the edge of the ear with the side folded in half.
4. The free ends of the threads are threaded through the resulting loop at the base of the eye.
5. They braid the hair and secure it with an invisible stitch.
6. The free edges of the yarn are trimmed with scissors.
7. Repeat similar actions on the other side of the headdress.

This model of ushanka does not include a pompom, but if the hat is going to be worn by a young girl, you can add some decor to add some mischief and coquetry to the look.

You can knit a hat for winter or autumn with knitting needles. The thickness and density of the ushanka can be varied depending on the number of knitting needles and the composition of the yarn. For women, it is better to choose strict models without unnecessary decorative elements. Decorations in the form of a single flower, embroidery on the hat, several rhinestones are allowed. Young girls can add a pompom, make an ushanka from bright multi-colored threads.
