- Head circumference. To take this measurement, the measuring tape should be positioned horizontally, approximately 2.5-3.0 cm above the level of the auricle.
- Planting depth. To take this measurement, the tape measure should run along the parting line, in the middle of the head, starting from the level of the eyebrows to the 2nd cervical vertebra (Atlas) or the so-called Feng Fu point.
These measurements are not difficult to take, but you need to be careful to construct the correct pattern. The measurements "Head circumference" and "Depth of fit" are absolute values, but to construct the drawing of the pattern of the future hat, it is important to make an adjustment for a comfortable fit and an adjustment for the density (stretch) of the material of manufacture.
How to make a knitted hat pattern
A knitted hat for women (the pattern is given for different models) is made of dense or loose knitted fabric, with or without lining, in 1 or 2 layers. All these nuances are necessarily taken into account when constructing and modeling the design of the future hat.
For example, if a knitwear with a very flexible stretchable structure is planned for a hat, then in this case 4.0 to 6.0 cm is subtracted from the absolute measurement of the head circumference (stretch correction). If the material is denser and less flexible, then the correction value will be from 2.0 to 3.5 cm.

It will be interesting to use different types of knitwear in one look, combining them into whole sets, for example: hat + scarf, hat + snood + mittens or hat + snood-hood + gloves.
To sew warm knitted items for the fall-winter-spring season, you can also use out-of-fashion sweaters, turtlenecks, old knitted dresses and suits, flowerpots or stoles - everything that is on the shelf in a woman's wardrobe "may come in handy".
Cutting the material
A knitted hat for women (the pattern for different models is given above) is sewn very simply, it is only important to follow the sequence of actions and do each step carefully. First, you need to prepare all the necessary materials and tools for sewing - a tailor's tape measure, scissors, a marker or chalk, a ruler, ready-made patterns for the hat, threads and a sewing machine.
It will be just great if the needlewoman has a household flat-stitch machine for knitwear "Coverlock", but a regular machine with the "Zigzag" operation, a simple overcasting machine will do. Even if you do not have this sewing equipment at home, you should not despair - all the work can be done manually.
The complete process of making a women's headdress can be analyzed using the example of sewing a 2-layer knitted "Sock" type hat.
- Before you start cutting out the hat, you should prepare all the necessary tools, pattern and material.
Before cutting out a new piece of knitwear, it must be steamed with an iron or a special steamer. This is done so that the fabric fibers undergo primary shrinkage.
- Fold the knitted piece in four. Place the hat pattern along the grain line to the inner corner, to the folds of the knitted fabric along the length and width of the piece. Pin the pattern to the fabric and mark the main outline, and then the cut outline, taking into account the processing allowances.
- Next, cut out the hat pattern piece along the outlined contour. Then unfasten the patterns from the finished pattern, lay it out in 2 layers along the fold line of the hat and mark the front and lining sides for yourself. At this point, the hat cutting can be considered complete.
Step-by-step sewing of a hat
A knitted hat for women (pattern of the “Sock” model) is sewn faster than it is cut, the main thing here is to perform the operations sequentially one after another.
- Along the marked lines on the front and lining parts of the hat, gather and stitch the front short darts (seam 1).
- First, lightly steam both darts “on the edge”, and then carefully iron the allowances to different sides.
- Fold the hat blank with the right side inward, joining both parts of the back seam in the unfolded form. Make a connecting seam of the upper and lower (lining) layers of the hat in one step (seam 2).
- Steam the connecting seam “on the edge”, and then lightly iron it in different directions.
- Turn the hat right side out, placing the fold between the front and lining sides of the product. Match the crown along the front short darts and back seams (they should match), secure all 4 layers with pins.
- Make connecting seams 3 and 3(1). The crown can be finished in one go, but the stitching seams of the front darts and back seams on both layers of the hat must match.
If thick knitwear is used to make the hat, then the crown design can be done in 2 stages - on the upper (front) part of the hat and the lower (lining) part of the hat separately. This will reduce the thickness of the seam and make the area of the back of the finished headdress softer and more embossed.
- Overcast the oval cut of the crown of the product on a special machine (seam 4). If you do not have such equipment at home, this cut can be processed with a manual blind stitch or manual overcasting. For example, like this:
- Lightly iron the connecting and overcast seam on the crown with steam. Turn the hat right side out and try it on. If the hat fits your head perfectly, then the headwear is a success.
To create a hat in a sporty style, without any unnecessary details and decorations, this moment can be considered the final one. But women are inclined to decoration and undeniable originality, so the next step to this goal can be decoration.
Decorative elements
There are many ways to decorate knitted women's hats, and this is where a woman can give in to all her imagination.
You can decorate not only a hand-sewn item, but also one bought in a store. In both cases, the headdress will become a unique, designer accessory that has no analogue or offensive "double".
Not all women's knitted hats require additional decoration. For example, a hat with a large textured knit with lace, a colored or geometric pattern hardly requires decoration, unless you "revive" it with a bright playful pompom, tassels or ears.
