The girl's face When creating a portrait, it is recommended to draw with a simple pencil. Such drawings, if necessary, can be easily corrected by deleting an erroneously drawn line, as well as correctly placing accents and indicating the angle of incidence of light using hatching, shadows and half-shadows.
What you need for drawing
Drawing of a girl's face (it is recommended that all artists, regardless of their age and experience, draw the initial sketch in pencil) for its creation will require:
- a sheet of thick paper or white cardboard (beginning artists are not recommended to draw with a pencil on thin or colored paper, since, given the need to frequently use an eraser during the work process, insufficiently thick paper may become deformed or even tear);
- a set of pencils with different lead hardness (different hardness of the stationery used is necessary for creating lines of different thickness, as well as for drawing and coloring the details of key objects in the composition);
- a large soft eraser made from high-quality rubber (otherwise, when used, it will leave streaks or holes on the paper);
- ruler, compass (if the artist does not have the skills to draw straight lines);
- sharpener (for timely sharpening of used pencils);
- templates, such as the outline of the eyes, mouth or nose, and so on (necessary if the beginning artist does not have even minimal experience in the visual arts).
Step-by-step master class for beginners: girl's face with pencil
Beginners are advised to draw the girl's face following the main stages of the work process formulated by experienced artists.
Proportions
To correctly outline the proportions of the future portrait, it is necessary to draw 2 perpendicular lines in the center of the working plane. If the head is planned to be depicted at an angle, the vertical should be placed diagonally.
Next, at the extreme points of the straight lines, you need to draw a rounded oval - the outline of the girl's head. After the main outline is created, inside the resulting figure, you need to sketch the outlines of smaller objects, taking into account the previously determined proportions.
Hair
To determine the location of the hairline, the artist should divide the upper part of the vertical line into 4 equal segments. It is recommended to start drawing the hair from the 2nd or 3rd mark, in an upward direction.
On the outside of the person's face, the hair can be drawn with wavy lines or slightly curved features. The length of the lines is determined by the hairstyle that the artist plans to draw in the end.
Eyebrows, lips, nose
The easiest way to draw eyebrows is to follow the previously drawn arc of the upper eyelid.
It is important to take into account two basic rules for constructing the architecture of a girl’s eyebrows:
- the area of the eyebrows located closer to the outer edge should be thinner than the one located at the inner corners of the eyes;
- The end of the eyebrow, located at the bridge of the nose, should be approximately twice as thick as the “tail” of the eyebrow.

The girl's nose should be drawn wedge-shaped. To do this, between the eyes, a little lower, it is necessary to depict an elongated trapezoid (the upper part of the nose), and from its side edges, draw 1 triangle (the wings of the nose). To the lower edge of the main figure, draw another trapezoid, stretching it out on the sides (nostrils).
To draw the lips, you need to draw a smoothly curved downward line (the borders of the upper and lower lips). Above and below this arc, draw one semicircle (lips). The upper lip should have more obvious curves, but be thinner than the lower lip, which is formed by rounded straight lines.
Eye markings
When marking the eyes, it is important to understand that there are no specific rules for drawing the organs of vision. Considering that the vast majority of people have almond-shaped eyes, they should be drawn using two semicircles connected to each other at the extreme points.
In this case, you should only focus on the peculiarity of people's appearance, which is that the rounded part of the eye should be closer to the inner corner, and the elongated part to the outer corner.
Face treatment with eraser
At this stage, it is necessary to remove all secondary lines with an eraser, as well as adjust the contour of the face itself or smaller objects that form it (for example, eyes, eyebrows, mouth, nose, etc.). After all the main lines have been adjusted by the artist with an eraser, the contour must be drawn again, making it clearer.
Bringing life to the eyes
When drawing the details of the eyes, it is necessary to take into account the basic rules:
- the iris should be hidden under the outer eyelid;
- eyelashes should be drawn from the inside out, while depicting those that grow on the lower eyelid shorter than those that grow on the upper;
- To create a realistic image, it is important to draw the upper eyelid well, depicting a small fold of skin above the eye;
- the pupil must be placed inside the previously drawn iris;
- It is necessary to indicate highlights inside the pupil, giving the eyes liveliness.
Light and shadow on the face
The correct placement of light and shadow on the face will help the artist make the drawn portrait more realistic. To darken the inner part of the pupil, it is necessary to shade them with a medium-hard pencil.
Apply shadows to the eyebrows using short strokes of varying brightness (when drawing eyebrows at the outer edge of the eye, press the pencil lighter than when drawing the tip of the eyebrow). Shadows should also be placed under the eyelids and on the sides of the nose. To add volume to the drawing, the artist needs to shade the lips and nostrils with dense strokes.
Darkening of cheekbones
A pencil drawing of a girl's face can be made more voluminous if you correctly select the places for darkening using shading.

One of these key areas is the cheekbones. In this case, shading should be done with a hard pencil, focusing on the middle area of the cheeks.
Drawing hair
The hair, the outline of which was previously outlined using wavy lines, should be drawn as follows:
- Mark the parting by placing it in the middle of the forehead area.
- Shade 1-2 cm in each direction to the right and left of the parting.
- Step back from the shaded area by 4-5 cm, then apply hatching or shading in randomly selected areas, varying in size and density.
Image of a girl for sketching
A beginner should start drawing people by creating an image of the person being depicted. The easiest way is to make a picture of a girl in a dress, since in this case there is no need to draw her wardrobe items in detail.
To create an image you need:

Profile portrait with bun hairstyle
A drawing of a girl's face (with a pencil you can not only outline the outline, but also color the image) in profile with a bun hairstyle can be done in several ways.

Drawing with model features and make-up
An artist who has already mastered the basic rules of creating portraits will be able to draw a girl with model-like facial features.
The simplest algorithm in this case is considered to be:

Girl with short hair
A drawing of a girl with short hair, created with a simple pencil, does not differ in complexity from the work process organized to create an image of a person with a long hairstyle, since the face in this case requires similar detailed drawing.

Half-turned portrait with closed eyes
Drawing a girl half-turned is easier than creating a full-face image, since this type of drawing does not require detailed drawing of the characteristic features of a person's appearance.

When creating a drawing with a girl's face in the center, a pencil is not only convenient for drawing the outline, but also for applying shadows, making the image three-dimensional.
In order for the artist's work to be used later, for example, for decorating a commercial or residential space, beginners should organize the process of creating a portrait according to strictly defined stages recommended by professionals.
