The lingerie-style shirt dress requires the use of a classic basic pattern. Beginners in sewing this model only need to use it.

The appearance of the finished product will not be affected in any way. More experienced craftswomen can cut out parts along the oblique direction of the material threads, as well as equip them with additional finishing elements.

The style of the dress in this style is so simple that the most standard basic pattern base of the appropriate size will do for its production. You can construct it yourself, following the initial calculations (substituting your own measurements into the formulas), or take a ready-made pattern. When the basic base is ready, it is adjusted to individual parameters.

1. To do this, additional darts are constructed, originating from the chest point (as shown in the picture). One of them is directed towards the neck, and the second – towards the center of the chest. This is justified by the fact that all three darts will be transferred to one chest dart, located in the side seam.
2. Next, edit the pattern according to the style. First, raise the waistline by 1.5 cm and reduce the width of the back and front pieces by 1-2 cm each along this line. This is necessary because the shirt dress does not have darts in the waist area.
3. The armhole line is also reduced by 1 cm. Such values ​​are used due to the fact that the basic pattern is already given with allowances for freedom of movement.
4. Then the bottom line of the product on the back and front is increased by 5 cm each. New side cuts are drawn through the constructed points from the armhole, waist and bottom lines. In the waist area, they are designed with a smooth curve.

This completes the adjustment of the side lines and the bottom line of the pattern. The next stage of editing the basic base is the design of the upper part of the front and back. Its design has the appearance of the selected style, which can be very diverse. Some model options are shown in the figure.

1. According to the selected configuration, the top of the pattern of the front and back parts is designed (in this case, the model is presented on straps). It can have the form of a smooth or broken line. The main thing when constructing it is to adhere to individual measurements.
2. After preliminary application of the supporting strokes, the main drawing is completed with more intense lines.

At this stage, the construction of the shirt dress pattern is completed. Next, the design is changed and transferred to the fabric. Modeling of the pattern is carried out after cutting it out along the new lines. It consists of forming a bust dart in the side seam by closing the three existing ones on the drawing.

After transferring the bust dart to the side seam, it should be noted that its new length is recommended to be reduced by 3 cm for a tighter fit around the chest. The dart solution remains the same.

Cutting and sewing

Next, proceed to transferring the pattern details onto the fabric:

1. Before doing this, you need to calculate the required amount of fabric. The length of the cut depends on the style of the model and includes the largest value for the height of the pattern plus seam allowances along the upper and lower edges of the product. The width is measured along the bottom line taking into account the allowances. The standard width of the material in rolls, which is 120 cm, is quite enough for one product.
2. When cutting, it is necessary to take into account the presence or absence of a seam on the back panel of the product. If it is not provided, then the fabric should be folded with cuts end-to-end along the middle line of the canvas. This way, you get 2 edges with folds for placing the back and front parts. If there is a seam, the material is folded in half and the cutting parts are arranged in the following order:

• the front part of the piece is aligned with the center line close to the fold of the fabric;
• back - stepping back from the edge of the fabric the amount of seam allowance.

3. Then the pattern is pinned to the fabric, seam allowances are marked and cut out. The dart solutions are also transferred. The resulting lines are aligned and basted. After that, the darts are pinned on a sewing machine, the basting is removed and ironed with the fold down.
4. Next, proceed to stitching the side cuts. They are sewn on a machine with subsequent processing on an overlock or a "lock" seam is used. The resulting seams are ironed. If there is a seam on the back panel, the same operation is carried out.
5. Before you start to design the top of the dress, you should prepare the straps. Their width also depends on the style and can vary within different limits. The prepared strips of fabric are folded in half in the direction of the base thread and stitched, leaving an allowance. It is not cut off, as it gives the detail density in the finished form. Next, having secured the thread with a needle on one of the end sides of the strap, thread it (the needle) through the inside of the detail and bring it out to the opposite end side. Thus, the straps are turned inside out. The details are well straightened, aligned and ironed. You can secure the seam with a finishing stitch. With the open ends up, the straps are attached to the main product in the designated places.
6. The next stage is processing the upper edge of the dress. This is done using a facing, which is cut out, exactly repeating the upper part of the front and back parts of the pattern. The width of the facing is usually 4-5 cm. The surface without seam allowances is glued with interlining, and its edges are stitched to form a closed ring.
7. The lower edge is processed with an overlock or hemmed, bending the interlining. Then, with the right sides inward, combining the upper edges of the facing and the main product, they are sewn together, adjusting the attached straps.
8. It is important to note that the length of the facing should ideally match the length of the upper edge of the garment. Otherwise, unsightly creases or bulges may form, which is completely unacceptable. Before wrapping the facing around the top of the dress, it is recommended to slightly notch the seam allowances at the convex or concave corners. This will allow you to evenly and beautifully design the upper edge of the garment.
9. Next, the facing is wrapped around the main part and swept out, leaving a slight edging (up to 1 mm). It is fixed using wet-heat treatment or a fixing finishing stitch. The auxiliary thread is removed.
10. The final stage is the design of the lower edge of the dress. It can be simply hemmed, having been pre-processed with an overlock, or a finishing detail in the form of lace or a flounce can be sewn on.

Despite the simplicity of the style and tailoring, a nightdress made in lingerie style will not tolerate carelessness and sloppiness in wearing or combining with other things. It is not enough to simply complement it with possible accessories. The main thing is to harmoniously “fit” it into the overall composition of the image, both in color and style.
