A nightdress made in a lingerie style, has been on the cutting edge of fashion trends for many years now. Simplicity, combined with high-quality and tastefully selected materials, represent the ideal image of femininity and grace with elements of complexity and a slight daring note.

Originally a sleeping accessory, this silhouette has gone beyond the home accessory and has firmly established itself in many areas of life. It can be found in the office, at an evening event, in everyday life and even in sports.

What to wear with a shirt dress

A lingerie-style nightdress is a simple model that does not restrict movement, does not have complex, and in most cases, completely absent, fasteners and zippers. A beautifully falling silhouette allows you to emphasize the advantages of a woman's figure. These reasons are the leading factors that put this style on the first step.

The simplicity of the silhouette and minimalism in the decorative trim allow you to combine a lingerie-style dress with many additional items. For any occasion, a shirt dress will become a relevant part of the wardrobe if it is correctly placed in the overall picture of the image.

Evening option

For attending a party or a formal social dinner, stylists recommend wearing a lingerie-style dress with straps. This look will highlight the beauty of the figure of the owner of the outfit and give her mystery and charm. The length of the product should be to the floor, which will add slimness and grace to the woman.

To complete the overall picture, it is advisable to throw a fur collar over your shoulders or wrap a silk scarf around your neck. It is selected in a color that matches the main material. Its structure and color should not stand out too much against the background of the image, but on the contrary, emphasize the flowing silhouette of the dress.

Fur collars and silk scarves are not suitable for open-back styles.

Of the costume jewelry or precious ornaments, vertical shapes are best suited for the evening option. Among them, pendant earrings or chains are especially popular. The finishing touch in this image is footwear. Sandals or shoes with an open front and necessarily high heels will be very appropriate here.

Everyday option

A mid-length shirt dress is perfect for an everyday look. In hot summer, it is worn alone or with a light satin or silk trench coat thrown over it. Nude pumps are a great choice for footwear.

In cool weather, outerwear is replaced with jackets, coats, cardigans, loose-fitting jackets, blazers made of light woolen fabric, cashmere, knitted by machine or by hand. More daring representatives of the female half can complement the look with a perforated elongated leather jacket.

Street version

To create a harmonious, comfortable and not provocative image for the street, stylists advise wearing a shirt dress paired with a leather biker jacket or bomber. For the initial trial stage of the experiment in this look, it is advisable to stick to one color scheme, and the role of shading the main color falls on the accessories.

These could be:

  • a handbag with metal handles or a chain;
  • ankle boots or high-heeled shoes.

A more sedate image of this option also involves combining a lingerie-style dress with a warm sweater with an original drape or large knit. Ankle boots, over-the-knee boots, loafers or boots with a high top and a stable heel or platform will give the composition a finished look.

Shoes and the structure of outerwear are selected depending on the season and weather conditions.

According to designers, you shouldn't stick to the same combination of fabrics of similar textures, but try to experiment with them. For example, in cold weather, a satin dress and a plush outer coat or trench coat will look great together.

To complete the look, you can wrap your neck in a warm hand-knitted long scarf and a slouch (hat). For slender and long-legged women, boots with a rough sole or oxfords are a great addition to this ensemble.

For very thin and young fashionistas who are not afraid to wear voluminous things, stylists recommend trying on the following multi-layered look. It consists of a shirt dress, over which a loose denim shirt is worn as a jacket, and then a crepe-satin shirt. The look is completed with ankle boots and one of the headdresses (a hat or a sock cap).

Current colors

A lingerie-style nightdress, depending on the fabric used and fashion trends, can come in a variety of colors and shades.

Along with the continuation of traditional pastel colors:

  • beige;
  • pink;
  • white;
  • green;
  • ivory;
  • brown.

Designers began to add some variety to their creations. More contrasting colors were added, namely black, deep blue, many shades of red. Interesting models appeared, made in two-color options, as well as with fantasy floral and geometric patterns.

Fabrics

A shirt dress sewn in a lingerie style requires certain conditions to be met during production. The purpose, silhouette, and combination with other attributes of the image impose the necessary characteristics on the material.

The fabric structure should be soft, flowing, pleasant to the body, and not wrinkled. Not all types of natural materials meet these criteria, so options containing synthetic fibers or their combinations are used.

Such examples include:

  • silk;
  • crepe satin;
  • translucent wool;
  • soft velvet;
  • velours;
  • lace;
  • chiffon;
  • viscose.

These are currently the most popular fabrics for sewing clothes of this type. Each of the listed materials, due to its structure, imparts certain qualities to the finished product.

So, silk dresses are luxurious and look very expensive, they are comfortable to wear and when in contact with the skin, they flow beautifully over the figure. Made of plain fabric, they suit bold, daring, self-confident and sexually attractive women. But the presence of a print turns the product into light and "flying" sarafan-dresses.

Lined chiffon garments are airy and romantic, adding a playful touch to a woman's look. Matte silk and crepe satin dresses are perfect for formal evenings or romantic getaways.

Popular Shirt Dress Models

The lingerie-style nightdress in a modern interpretation has several attractive models designed for specific purposes. Thus, the traditional model is used in everyday life, at work and on the street.

It is also popular as an evening dress with a deep neckline on the back, with additional accessories. The same style of dress-shirt with straps and clearly defined chest contours is used for the same application.

The variety of nuances introduced into the cut of the product partially changes its image, but the basic silhouette of the shirt dress remains unchanged. So, cutting along the bias line of the fabric gives a more elegant fit of the product on the figure, a beautifully flowing structure of the fabric, and a detailed emphasis on feminine virtues.

Decorative flounces, cut in a spiral and located in the seam where the yoke is attached with an acute angle, add uniqueness and exciting femininity.

An important role in the design of the image is played by individual details, harmoniously selected to match the tone of the product or creating a bright contrast with the main color. The classic option is lace or guipure, which goes well with silk, satin or chiffon.

The modern trend has brought its own trends to the lingerie style nightgown. Among them are the patchwork effect, asymmetrical expansion of the bottom of the product, multi-layering, drapery and the use of finishing details.

In any version of using a dress of this style, sloppiness should not be allowed. This model, complex in its stylistic design, requires careful selection of all accompanying attributes and accessories.

Patterns

The lingerie-style shirt dress requires the use of a classic basic pattern. Beginners in sewing this model only need to use it.

The appearance of the finished product will not be affected in any way. More experienced craftswomen can cut out parts along the oblique direction of the material threads, as well as equip them with additional finishing elements.

The style of the dress in this style is so simple that the most standard basic pattern base of the appropriate size will do for its production. You can construct it yourself, following the initial calculations (substituting your own measurements into the formulas), or take a ready-made pattern. When the basic base is ready, it is adjusted to individual parameters.

  1. To do this, additional darts are constructed, originating from the chest point (as shown in the picture). One of them is directed towards the neck, and the second – towards the center of the chest. This is justified by the fact that all three darts will be transferred to one chest dart, located in the side seam.
  2. Next, edit the pattern according to the style. First, raise the waistline by 1.5 cm and reduce the width of the back and front pieces by 1-2 cm each along this line. This is necessary because the shirt dress does not have darts in the waist area.
  3. The armhole line is also reduced by 1 cm. Such values are used due to the fact that the basic pattern is already given with allowances for freedom of movement.
  4. Then the bottom line of the product on the back and front is increased by 5 cm each. New side cuts are drawn through the constructed points from the armhole, waist and bottom lines. In the waist area, they are designed with a smooth curve.

This completes the adjustment of the side lines and the bottom line of the pattern. The next stage of editing the basic base is the design of the upper part of the front and back. Its design has the appearance of the selected style, which can be very diverse. Some model options are shown in the figure.

  1. According to the selected configuration, the top of the pattern of the front and back parts is designed (in this case, the model is presented on straps). It can have the form of a smooth or broken line. The main thing when constructing it is to adhere to individual measurements.
  2. After preliminary application of the supporting strokes, the main drawing is completed with more intense lines.

At this stage, the construction of the shirt dress pattern is completed. Next, the design is changed and transferred to the fabric. Modeling of the pattern is carried out after cutting it out along the new lines. It consists of forming a bust dart in the side seam by closing the three existing ones on the drawing.

After transferring the bust dart to the side seam, it should be noted that its new length is recommended to be reduced by 3 cm for a tighter fit around the chest. The dart solution remains the same.

Cutting and sewing

Next, proceed to transferring the pattern details onto the fabric:

  1. Before doing this, you need to calculate the required amount of fabric. The length of the cut depends on the style of the model and includes the largest value for the height of the pattern plus seam allowances along the upper and lower edges of the product. The width is measured along the bottom line taking into account the allowances. The standard width of the material in rolls, which is 120 cm, is quite enough for one product.Lingerie Style Chemise Dress. Patterns
  2. When cutting, it is necessary to take into account the presence or absence of a seam on the back panel of the product. If it is not provided, then the fabric should be folded with cuts end-to-end along the middle line of the canvas. This way, you get 2 edges with folds for placing the back and front parts. If there is a seam, the material is folded in half and the cutting parts are arranged in the following order:
  • the front part of the piece is aligned with the center line close to the fold of the fabric;
  • back - stepping back from the edge of the fabric the amount of seam allowance.
  1. Then the pattern is pinned to the fabric, seam allowances are marked and cut out. The dart solutions are also transferred. The resulting lines are aligned and basted. After that, the darts are pinned on a sewing machine, the basting is removed and ironed with the fold down.Lingerie Style Chemise Dress. Patterns
  2. Next, proceed to stitching the side cuts. They are sewn on a machine with subsequent processing on an overlock or a "lock" seam is used. The resulting seams are ironed. If there is a seam on the back panel, the same operation is carried out.
  3. Before you start to design the top of the dress, you should prepare the straps. Their width also depends on the style and can vary within different limits. The prepared strips of fabric are folded in half in the direction of the base thread and stitched, leaving an allowance. It is not cut off, as it gives the detail density in the finished form. Next, having secured the thread with a needle on one of the end sides of the strap, thread it (the needle) through the inside of the detail and bring it out to the opposite end side. Thus, the straps are turned inside out. The details are well straightened, aligned and ironed. You can secure the seam with a finishing stitch. With the open ends up, the straps are attached to the main product in the designated places.Lingerie Style Chemise Dress. Patterns
  4. The next stage is processing the upper edge of the dress. This is done using a facing, which is cut out, exactly repeating the upper part of the front and back parts of the pattern. The width of the facing is usually 4-5 cm. The surface without seam allowances is glued with interlining, and its edges are stitched to form a closed ring.
  5. The lower edge is processed with an overlock or hemmed, bending the interlining. Then, with the right sides inward, combining the upper edges of the facing and the main product, they are sewn together, adjusting the attached straps.Lingerie Style Chemise Dress. Patterns
  6. It is important to note that the length of the facing should ideally match the length of the upper edge of the garment. Otherwise, unsightly creases or bulges may form, which is completely unacceptable. Before wrapping the facing around the top of the dress, it is recommended to slightly notch the seam allowances at the convex or concave corners. This will allow you to evenly and beautifully design the upper edge of the garment.
  7. Next, the facing is wrapped around the main part and swept out, leaving a slight edging (up to 1 mm). It is fixed using wet-heat treatment or a fixing finishing stitch. The auxiliary thread is removed.Lingerie Style Chemise Dress. Patterns
  8. The final stage is the design of the lower edge of the dress. It can be simply hemmed, having been pre-processed with an overlock, or a finishing detail in the form of lace or a flounce can be sewn on.

Despite the simplicity of the style and tailoring, a nightdress made in lingerie style will not tolerate carelessness and sloppiness in wearing or combining with other things. It is not enough to simply complement it with possible accessories. The main thing is to harmoniously “fit” it into the overall composition of the image, both in color and style.
