Sweaters with the beautiful name cardigan are popular and versatile. These knitted items are suitable for all seasons. Oversized models are especially cozy and comfortable. Depending on the complexity of the work on them, the patterns for this can be different.
Oversized garter stitch cardigan
In this loose sweater, the dropped shoulder line is continued by the sleeve. The cardigan is knitted in separate parts using garter stitch. The finished parts are then sewn together.
To perform the thing, use:
- needle;
- threads (200 m per 100 g);
- knitting needles with wire or fishing line number 4.

To start working, cast on 80 elements on the knitting needles. Then knit 5-7 cm of fabric with a regular 1x1 elastic band. After that, alternate between front and back circles. Having knitted the desired length of the back, divide the fabric and perform only 30 loops.
The remaining elements are not touched yet. This section is made the same length as the back, but only up to the elastic. Then 7 cm are knitted with this same pattern, as at the very bottom of the product.
After completing the 1x1 elastic, the loops on the knitting needles are closed. The previously untouched 30 loops are knitted in the same way as the previous section. The resulting parts are then placed on the back and sewn from the inside, leaving optimal armholes for the width of the sleeves.
Next, make a plank, picking up elements from the shelves. Then knit an elastic band, as in the beginning. It is then sewn to the neck opening on the back.
After all this is done, the sleeves are knitted. They are made in the same way as the previous parts, starting with the elastic and ending with the garter stitch fabric. The finished sleeves are sewn together on the side on the wrong side and turned inside out. Then they are attached to the previously left holes on the cardigan.
Sleeves can also be knitted in a circle, picking up elements for this directly from the armholes. But work in this way begins with the front surface, finishing it with a 1x1 elastic band. All remaining and protruding threads are eventually hidden from the inside of the product.
An oversized cardigan with knitting needles (the pattern for knitting it can describe different models) is easiest to perform according to optimal descriptions. Such explanations have their own characteristics for each type of product.

Openwork oversized cardigan
Common openwork patterns for oversized cardigans are:
- cones;
- locks;
- braids;
- paths;
- spikelets;
- cross knitting.
When creating a summer cardigan of size 38-40, use knitting needles marked 3 and 500 g of linen and viscose threads. The openwork is a multiple of loops: 10 + 1 + 2. The front circles of the ornament are made according to the pattern, and the back ones - according to the drawing below:

Yarn overs are made with purl steps. Knitting of the openwork ornament begins with the edge element and steps up to the rapport. Then this section is repeated and steps after it are made. The circle is finished with an edge loop.
The height of the rapport is 20 rows. The elastic of the product is knitted from an even number of elements (edge, front, back, edge). A sample in the form of a 10x10 cm square is equal to 21 loops on 29 circles.
A hollow bar made of 3 elements is made as follows:
- Cast on 3 stitches onto the knitting needles and transfer them to the left side of the circular tools.
- *On the back side of the product, pull the thread through and tighten it tightly in front of the remaining elements. Then knit 2 front loops, knit the last element of the strip with one previously left, with a left-hand tilt. Then 1 loop is again thrown onto the left knitting needle and repeated from *.
- After all is done, the elements of the strip are closed and the thread is hidden.
For the back, cast on 123 loops and knit them crosswise. Then the work is done with the main ornament. Having reached 62 cm, 180 elements are closed. In this case, 17 steps in the middle will make up the neck, and the outer 53 elements will be the shoulders.
For the left shelf, 53 loops are crosswise cast on. Then the main ornament is made. Having knitted the shelf to the required length, the loops are closed. The right part of the front is made similar to the left.
For the sleeves, 60 loops are cast on crosswise. At the same time, their strip is knitted with a rib band up to 5 cm from the bottom. Then its elements are evenly distributed in the last circle, adding 23 elements until 83 loops are formed on the knitting needles. Then a diamond pattern is made. After knitting 120 circles (41.5 cm), the loops are closed.
You can see what the pattern for the openwork cardigan looks like in the picture below.

With V-neck
For such a simple model with a V-neck, the following are applicable:
- the density of execution with an openwork ornament is 24 loops for 29 circles, equal to a square sample of 10x10 cm;
- silk ribbon 7 mm wide and 1 m long;
- 50 g of yarn for 132 m of cotton and acrylic (8 balls);
- hook No. 3.25;
- knitting needles with cord No. 3.75.
All the above materials and tools are suitable for a cardigan with a length of 61 cm and a chest circumference of 91 cm. In an openwork ornament, the number of elements should be a multiple of 10 loops and 2 edge loops.
Pattern
The air pattern is knitted as follows:
- 1-4 circles are done with the front surface;
- Round 5: *slip through – slip 1 element as a knit stitch and throw the next one over it; yarn over; 8 knits; repeat from * to the last 2 elements, slip through, yarn over.
- Round 6: purl stitches.
- 7-8 circles: stocking stitch.
- Then repeat rows 1 through 8.
Back
To create the back, do the following:
- Cast on 108 elements onto the knitting needles and perform 1 circle with purl stitches.
- Next row: 8 knit stitches; 92 elements of openwork ornament; 8 knit stitches.
- Then knit according to the pattern up to 29 cm in height from the beginning of the set.
- After this, all circles are knitted with the front surface up to 42 cm from the set.
- Having reached this length, for sleeve openings, close 4 loops at the beginning of the next 2 circles, also decrease 3 steps in the next 2 rows, 2 loops in the next 4 rows. Then decrease 1 loop (at the beginning and end) in the next 6 rows. This will equal 80 elements.
- When the armholes are 17 cm long, close the central 34 loops for the neck opening and finish the 2 resulting parts of the back separately. In this case, in the neck opening line, close 3 elements from 2 sides, and then 2 once. At a height of 19 cm, close all the steps.
Left and right shelves
When forming the left shelf, cast on 54 loops and perform 1 circle with purl steps.
Then proceed according to the following scheme:
- 6 front elements, 42 openwork loops, 6 front steps.
- Continue execution until the length is 29 cm according to the drawing from point 1.
- Then, up to 40 cm, all steps are made with the pattern "front surface". After that, in the next front circle, they begin to form the upper neckline: 51 steps with front ones, 2 elements together with front ones, 1 front one. The closure is repeated in every 2nd circle 23 times.
- Having reached a length of 42 cm, close the steps for the armhole on the other side of the shelf, using the back pattern as a guide.
- With a sleeve length of 19 cm, the remaining 18 shoulder elements are covered.
The right shelf of the product is made symmetrically with the left one. In this case, decreasing, a drawstring is made in the neckline.
Sleeves
When knitting the sleeves, start from the following pattern:
- Cast on 54 stitches onto the knitting needles and make 1 circle with purl stitches.
- In the 1st row there are: knit stitch, 52 elements of air ornament, 1 knit stitch.
- Next, follow the pattern, adding 1 step 12 times on each side in every 10th circle, knitting them with the front surface.
- After 34 cm from the start of the cast-on, all steps are performed with the front surface until the length is 43 cm. After this, there should be 78 loops.
- For the sleeve cap, close 4 steps at the beginning of the next 2 circles, then 3 elements at the beginning of the next 2, 2 loops at the beginning of the next 4 circles. Then decrease 1 element on both sides of the knitting in the next 6 rows up to 50 loops on the needles. After this, decrease 1 step 4 times on both sides of the execution in every 4th circle. Then do the same 5 times in every 2nd row up to 32 elements on the needles.
- At the beginning of the next 4 rounds, close 2 loops, then 3 elements in the next 2 and 4 in the next 2. The remaining 10 steps are also completed.
Assembling the product
To assemble a V-neck cardigan:
- sew the shoulder areas;
- sew in the sleeves;
- perform sleeve and side seams;
- 2 rows of the strip are formed with a crochet hook: one with double crochets, and the second with a crab step. The sleeve cuffs are also tied using a similar method.
With a comb pattern
Its rapport contains 21 elements. When casting on, 3 steps and 2 edge loops are added to the calculated loops. In the first circle, there are front loops, in the next - back loops. The 3rd row is knitted with front steps.

Then adhere to the following:
- knit, *yarn over, 21 knit, *2 knit;
- 2 purl, *(purl + 3 knit) x 5, 2 purl, * purl;
- front, *(front + yarn over + front + 3 purl + front) x 5, yarn over, * 2 front;
- 2 purl, *(2 purl + 3 knit + purl) x 5, 2 purl, * purl;
- front, *(front + yarn over) x 2, (front + purl = front through back edge, 2 purl) x 5, (front + yarn over) x 2, * 2 front;
- 2 purl, *(4 purl + 2 knit + purl) x 5, 4 purl, * 1 purl;
- front, *(front + yarn over) x 4, (front and back together + purl) x 5, (front + yarn over) x 4, * 2 front;
- 2 purl, *(8 purl + knit + purl) x 5, 8 purl, * purl;
- front, *8 front + front and back together) x 5, 8 back, * 2 front;
- 2 purl, *8 purl + 4 purl, transferred to an additional knitting needle and wrapped with thread counterclockwise 3 times, then removed to the left tool, 9 purl, * purl;
- all elements are facial.

Kimono style, with batwing sleeves
This cardigan is made as a single rectangular piece. Then its corners are folded and sewn. After that, a patterned strip is attached to the item.
To work on size 36/38 we recommend:
- 400 g of cotton and wool yarn;
- circular needles 3.5 and 4;
- double pointed needles No. 3.
To knit a kimono cardigan, do the following:
- Cast on 182 stitches using circular knitting needles.
- Then, using the front surface, create a rectangle with a height of 64 cm. After this, the loops are closed.
- Separately knit a pair of strips with a height of 90 cm. For each of these parts, cast on 33 loops on the knitting needles, from which an openwork ornament is created according to the scheme. The last circle is left with open loops. After this, the strips are sewn together. The scheme of the openwork pattern is as follows:
Women's kimono cardigan with batwing sleeves. Pattern - The corners of the main fabric are folded (wrong side to wrong side). Then the edges of the rectangle are connected using a mattress stitch. For the armholes, the outer 10 cm are left open.
- Then, on the sides of the armholes, cast on 44 loops on stocking needles and knit them with a 1x1 elastic band for 5.5 cm.
