A mosque is a liturgical architectural structure. Masjid (translated from Arabic) is a cult place of worship in Islam. You can draw a mosque with pencils in different variations: both a simple structure and a more elaborate building with additional elements.
To complete the work you will need several simple slate pencils of varying softness. You can draw on regular album paper or on squares for the little ones. You will also need an eraser and a sharpener.
Schematic pencil drawing
The largest mosque is located in Saudi Arabia. Masjid Al-Haram can accommodate up to 4 million worshipers and ministers. The total area of the mosque is more than 88 hectares.
How to draw a Mosque schematically, with a simple pencil, is indicated below in the text:
- On a clean sheet of paper, in the middle, draw a long, slightly slanted line. Visually divide the line into 3 parts.
- At the bottom of the drawing, leaving equal intervals, add 2 lines equal to ⅓ of the original. Connect the ends of the segments to each other in an oblong rectangle.
- Also, step back from the side borders of the rectangle equal intervals and draw small lines, at an angle. The segments should be smaller than the previous ones.
- Connect the corners of the rectangle with the ends of the parallel segments. This forms the base of the mosque.
- Stepping back a small distance upwards from the border of the rectangle, draw an elongated, horizontally located oval. Remove the lower part with an eraser.
- Using short vertical parallel lines, connect the drawn oval with the previously prepared rectangle.
- In the upper part of the drawing, using a compass or improvised objects, draw a semicircle and connect it with the previously added oval. In this way, you can create a dome of a mosque.
- The top of the circle should not reach the end of the vertical line.
- Work on the lower part of the drawing.
- Draw 2 lines parallel to each other on the side "walls" of the mosque. The lines should be slightly tilted, which will add volume to the drawing.
- In the main rectangle, also draw a line that visually divides it in half.
- Detail the dome and base. Use a shape that resembles a triangle without a base to make the dome more pointed.
- Add some rounded lines that will give volume to the base of the dome.
- Expand the rectangle's borders. Make the side edges of the figure clearer, slightly raise the upper part of the element.
- Use vertical rectangles of different sizes to detail the walls and bases of the dome. The number of figures may vary, depending on the number of arches.
- Draw a long vertical line at the bottom of the drawing. This will separate the main structure from the stairs.
- Draw short vertical segments that form the windows.
- Add angular shapes – the tops of the arches.
- Draw long inclined lines – the base of the stairs and railings.
- Draw the horizon line located behind the mosque.
- Add lines of steps and also decorate the area around the mosque with green trees.
- Use the eraser to remove unnecessary elements of the drawing.
- Use pencils of different hardness to do the shading. The procedure adds volume to the drawing, makes it more realistic and understandable.

You can also use pencils and markers to color the resulting image. The mosque can be used as an independent picture or as an element of the plot.
Taj Mahal in pencil
The Taj Mahal is one of the most famous mausoleums-mosques located in India. The architectural structure was erected in 1632, its height is 73 m. The Taj Mahal is recognized as a masterpiece of Muslim art and cultural heritage of India and the whole world.
How to draw the Taj Mahal Mosque with a pencil is given step by step below:
- At the bottom of the prepared sheet, draw a flat, vertically elongated rectangle.
- In the middle of the figure, draw a large, tall rectangle.
- He previously drew lines on the element, slightly stepping back from the upper end.
- Connect the drawn line with the top edge of the bottom rectangle. This will form the base of the Taj Mahal.
- From the top extreme corner of the wall draw a line to the side. Connect the segment with the lower rectangle and repeat the procedure with the other side of the drawing.
- From the top edge of the central rectangle, draw an egg-shaped figure that forms the dome of the mosque.
- In each vertical rectangle draw 2 rows of windows. In the central rectangle, in the middle, install a pointed arch.
- Add arches and domes to the side walls. Detail the area of the central wall, and also draw the main dome.
- Draw the top of the central dome.
- Add 2 columns. Make the drawing more voluminous by drawing parallel lines along the perimeter of the walls.
- Add peaks to the walls of the mosque.
- Use an eraser to remove unnecessary lines from the drawing.
If desired, the resulting drawing can be colored. To obtain the color "ivory", use different colored pencils or watercolors.
Quick drawing with a simple pencil
The size of the mosque depends on the sections and the population of the city. The buildings are designed in such a way as to accommodate all believers. The height of the minaret also depends on the size of the city.
How to draw a Mosque with a simple pencil quickly, is described in detail below:
- Without using rulers or other tools, draw the foundation of a mosque.
- Draw vertical elongated rectangles. Keep a small distance between adjacent figures.
- Connect the rectangles with parallel lines.
- Draw small arches at the base of the mosque.
- The top rectangle is the base for the dome. You can draw the dome by hand or with a compass or a round object.
- Detail the semicircle with rounded lines.
- Draw an alem on the top of the dome. The alem consists of a thin column, on which a spherical figure and a crescent are attached.
- Draw a tower on the left side of the drawing.
- To draw the tower, you can use basic shapes – rectangles of different sizes.
- Draw a small triangle at the top of the tower.
- Detail the lower part of the drawing. Make all the edges of the figures clearer, if necessary, remove unnecessary lines with an eraser. Some bearing lines necessary for a better understanding of the structure of the drawing can be left. It is enough to remove the top layer of graphite with a kneaded eraser.
- Draw the dome. Add a mesh pattern and inscriptions. Make the Ales clearer.
- Draw the tower. Add some parallel lines to each rectangle and shade some areas.
The resulting image can be used as a stand-alone image, or used as a background for another drawing.
Mosque with minarets in pencil
One of the elements of the mosque are minarets. Inside the towers there are spiral staircases, which are intended for passage to the balcony. The balcony is called sharaf. From the sharaf, the servants of the mosque invite the believers to attend the service.
How to draw a Mosque with minarets using a simple pencil:
- On a clean sheet of paper, placed vertically, draw an elongated thin rectangle.
- Visually measure the middle of the rectangle and draw a clear line upward from the top border of the figure.
- Visually divide the horizontal line into 3 parts. Separate the first segment with a point. Using a compass, draw a small circle, the middle of which is the designated area.
- Draw a large rectangle in the middle of the mosque base. The upper edge of the figure should slightly intersect with the lower edge of the previously drawn circle.
- Draw elongated vertical rectangles on the left and right sides.
- Step back a little towards the center and draw smaller and thinner rectangles.
- Draw a larger figure above the central rectangle. Add small clear lines in the center of each half.
- The segments are also drawn on the side rectangles. Adding additional elements simplifies the procedure of detailing the drawings.
- To give a more natural form to the minarets. The towers have small projections and also taper closer to the top.
- There are small peaks at the ends of the minarets.
- Give the mosque and domes a characteristic shape. The corners need to be smoothed out, add details – as shown in the picture.
- Draw the entrance area to the mosque. If desired, you can add various decorations and small details.
- Make the minarets more detailed and add volume to the towers.
- Finish the image by drawing the details for the dome.
The resulting image can be painted over or left as is. Pencil drawings are often shaded, adding volume with a pencil lead or chalk.
For shading you will need:
- eraser or kneaded paper;
- finished drawing;
- simple pencils of different hardness;
- optional - colored pencils.
To draw small details, you can use a thin marker or a black gel pen.
Persian Mosque in Pencil
Often mosques are tower-like structures called "mizana". The word has Arabic roots and is derived from "lighthouse". Often an abundance of minarets is found in Iran and Iraq. Mosques of Islamic countries have characteristic features: helmet-shaped domes, a single sharaf, and a round cross-section. Architectural structures also combined the culture of other countries, their style.
How to draw a Persian Mosque with a simple pencil is explained in this instruction:
- Outline the image of the mosque.
- On a clean sheet of paper, draw a figure resembling a pentagon. Separate the main drawing from the edge of the working surface with a long vertical line.
- Divide the drawing into 2 parts with a small vertical line.
- Draw 4 vertical long rectangles along the perimeter and on the territory of the future mosque.
- Draw domes on the resulting shape, and also outline the towers. To obtain the necessary structure, you can use rectangles and semicircles, triangles.
- On the lower border of the sheet, outline images of trees and bushes.
- Use the eraser to remove unnecessary elements.
- Use a hard pencil to draw the outlined lines. Add additional elements.
- On the walls of the mosque, depict small windows and arches.
- Detail the trees around the perimeter, add texture and volume.
- Add shadows to one side of the mosque. The location of the shadow depends on the author's idea, the light.
- Shading can be done using different methods. The choice of method depends on individual preferences and the texture of a particular material.
Also, at the end of the work, it is necessary to clean up the drawing with an eraser or a kneaded eraser. The resulting drawing can be colored with colored pencils or watercolors, as well as various paints.
Mosque with geometric shapes
One of the unique mosques is Madina Masjid. This is a modern architectural construction of 2012, located in India. The building is made of glass, which makes it unusual, the mosque has no analogues. The Masjid includes more than 2 thousand parishioners.
How to draw a simple Mosque using geometric shapes:
Stage | Description of the stage | What you will need |
1 | Drawing the base for the mosque. Place the album sheet in a vertical position. Draw a long line at the bottom using a ruler. Draw an additional segment parallel to the previous one. Connect the ends of the lines. Attach a thin vertical rectangle of a smaller size to the previous figure. | A sheet of white paper, a soft pencil, a ruler. |
2 | Place 2 large, vertically standing rectangles on the sides of the base. Place 3 smaller rectangles between the formed protrusions. For each figure, draw relief edges: for the outer rectangles on two sides, for the middle ones – on three sides. Connect the upper part of the side rectangles with a straight line. | Soft pencil, ruler |
3 | Draw arches from the middle rectangles to the border of the line drawn earlier. This will require arched lines connecting the right and left corners of each cell. Connect the rectangles with short segments located just below the upper border. | Soft pencil, ruler, eraser. |
4 | Draw figures with rounded corners at the ends of the outer rectangles. Use rectangles of different sizes and thicknesses to assemble tall towers. The final rectangle should be thin and wide enough. On its surface place a semi-oval, forming a dome, and on the top of the oval - a sharp triangle. | Pencil, ruler, eraser, form for drawing ovals. |
5 | Assemble the main part of the mosque in a similar way: draw several rectangles of different sizes, forming projections under the dome. Using a compass, draw a large semicircle, and on its surface many small ovals and rectangles. In the upper part, draw a crescent and a five-pointed star. | Compass, pencil, sharpener, ruler. |
6 | Clean the resulting drawing from unnecessary lines and debris. If necessary, duplicate the lines with a harder pencil to achieve a brighter effect. | Hard pencil, sharpener, eraser, ruler. |
The resulting image can be shaded or colored with pencils or paints.
A mosque drawn using geometric shapes is suitable for preschool and elementary school children. In the process, you can study the structure of architectural structures, as well as practice the possibility of using geometry in drawing.
Simple drawing of a mosque
A simpler version of the mosque for beginners also represents a method of composing the building using geometric figures. The image can be used
When constructing a building on paper, you can also use rulers and other handy elements. To get a more "live" drawing, all elements are drawn by hand: first with a soft pencil, then with a harder one.
A mosque is an amazing architectural structure that has a history and its own characteristics. Masjids have different styles, internal and external structures, and sizes. You can draw a mosque in different ways and methods: by hand, using geometric shapes. The resulting image can be colored with a slate pencil, markers, or paints.
