Many women love and know how to create beautiful items with their own hands. With the purchase of a sewing machine, one of the first things you need to sew is a summer sarafan. The item is easy to make and useful in the wardrobe.
DIY Sundress for Beginners
A dress without sleeves and a collar is usually called a sarafan. The simplest cut with straps came from Ancient Rus'. It was worn with an undershirt, richly decorated with embroidery.
Today, a woman’s wardrobe may contain several identical items for different purposes:
- summer - the most comfortable type of clothing at this time of year;
- winter sundress - a blouse or turtleneck is worn underneath;
- dressy - sewn from evening fabrics.
Any sewing begins with the selection of suitable fabric. Any dress fabric of the desired color will do for a sarafan. When sewing a winter dress with straps, a thick warm material is selected. Summer models are sewn from thin natural fabrics.
After choosing the style and buying the right fabric, a pattern is made or a ready-made design is selected. The necessary measurements are taken independently, but better with the help of a friend.
Name | Designation | How to measure correctly |
Chest girth | Og | Use a tailor's tape measure to encircle the figure at the level of the protruding points of the chest |
Waist circumference | From | The tape closes at the narrow point of the figure |
Hip circumference | About | The measuring tape runs horizontally along the protruding points of the buttocks, taking into account the protrusion of the wide part of the hips. |
Chest height | Vg | The tape connects the highest points of the chest and the shoulder seam lines |
Front Waist Length | Road accident | The shortest distance from the highest point of the shoulder seam to the front waist. |
Back Waist Length | Dts | The shortest distance from the highest point of the shoulder seam to the back waist. |
Length of product | Di | The tape runs from the highest point of the shoulder seam to the desired hem line at the front of the garment. |
The width at the bottom level is determined by the model.
The following tools are used for sewing:
- Sewing machine and overlock, overlock stitch can be replaced with a zigzag stitch of a household sewing machine.
- Tailor's pins.
- Scissors big and small.
- Threads of the appropriate color.
Important! Natural fabrics for shrinkage are washed or steamed with an iron before cutting.
Sewing a sundress with straps consists of the following steps:
- The bust darts are sewn on the shelf.
- The neckline and armholes are trimmed with bias binding, and straps are formed from the binding at the same time.
- The side seams are sewn together.
- The bottom of the sundress is folded by hand or by machine.
There are many models of this popular type of clothing, each of which has its own manufacturing features.
Pareo-sarafan
Soft flowing fabric or knitted fabric is best for sewing. Only one measurement is used in cutting – Ob. The width of the workpiece is Ob x 2. The length, taking into account the straps, should cover the swimsuit.
The upper corners are cut off, the length of the cut is equal to the width of the armhole of the individual pattern. Along the perimeter, except for the armholes, the rectangle is folded with a seam with a closed cut. Lastly, the armholes are processed and straps are made from bias tape.
When worn, the middle of the sarafan is located in the center of the back, and the sides with straps are under the arms. This creates the effect of a wrap dress in the front, and a beautiful deep neckline is formed behind.
Model with flounce on shoulders
Sundresses with open shoulders and a flounce on top have remained popular for several years. Natural summer fabric made of cotton or mixed linen is suitable for the product.
This model has 2 varieties:
- the frill is located at the top of the neckline and the lower part of the armholes;
- The flounce from the neckline goes onto the shoulder, while the upper part of the arm remains open.
For a slender girl, a sarafan with a flounce made of thin fabric is cut out in the form of two rectangles - a shelf and a back. The flounce is a rectangle with a width selected according to the model, plus allowances for hemming and a length equal to Og x 2.5.
The back is sewn to the shelf along the side seams, not reaching the top by 25 cm. The bottom of the dress and the flounce are folded. The flounce is stitched to the top of the dress along the neckline, a third of the flounce's length falls on the armholes. A drawstring is made on top of the flounce, and an elastic band is threaded inside.
Boho style made of linen
Fans of the boho style will prefer a simple-cut sarafan made of linen fabric. An ethnic-style blouse or a white, loose T-shirt is worn underneath. The pattern consists of a skirt panel, a sarafan chest, and straps. The straps cross on the back.
The order of sewing a comfortable summer sundress:
- The chest is made of two parts to maintain its shape. The chest parts are folded face to face, stitched along the neckline and sides.
- The straps are sewn together and turned inside out.
- The processed straps are placed into the chest and sewn in with a machine stitch.
- The chest is turned inside out, ironed, and joined to the gathered skirt at the top. The belt and zipper are processed on the back panel.
- The bottom is folded in. The straps are connected to the waistband of the skirt using loops and buttons.
A boho-style sundress can be worn in the cold season with a thick blouse or knitwear.
For pregnant women
The model is distinguished by a laconic cut and great freedom in the waist area. The fabrics selected are shape-stable and natural. It would be ideal if the product made of medium-density natural fabric could be worn both on the naked body and with a T-shirt.
The pattern is constructed taking into account the large protrusion of the abdomen. To do this, the bust dart is completely opened towards the bottom of the garment. The increase in the waistline in mid-pregnancy should be up to 20 cm. The armholes and neck are trimmed with bias tape, and the straps will also be made from it.
Summer with straps
A summer sundress with straps is the most comfortable type of clothing for the hot season.
You can sew it yourself using a minimum number of additional measurements:
- chest volume above the mammary glands;
- strap length;
- Bottom width.
Natural cotton, silk, linen, viscose and blended fabrics are used for sewing.
Important! It is better not to use synthetic fabrics for summer clothes. They are beautiful, but in the warm season sweat is not absorbed into them and the body does not breathe.
Winter version
You can sew a sarafan for a woman (things made with your own hands are cozier and warmer) using fabric from a ripped item.
Warm and dense fabrics are used for winter clothing:
- jeans;
- dress fabrics made of wool or blended wool;
- thin coat;
- Jersey.
A winter sarafan is sewn from a dense, shape-stable fabric. For cutting, you need to use a proven individual dress base or a suitable one from a magazine. The main thing is that the size and degree of fit are suitable, all the shaped lines can be drawn and a new pattern can be obtained.
For winter clothes, it is useful to have pockets. The back is closed, the neckline can be small. The armhole is lowered by 2-5 cm, compared to the armhole of the dress.
Sewing is carried out in the following sequence:
- The pockets on the shelf are processed.
- A zipper is sewn into the middle seam of the back.
- The back and front are joined along the shoulder seams.
- The neckline and armholes are trimmed with facings or bias tape.
- The side seams are sewn and the bottom of the garment is hemmed.
The winter product is sewn from thick durable fabric. With high-quality sewing, the sarafan will last a long time.
For full with smell
The wrap-around sarafan is easy to put on. The angled neckline that turns into a wrap on the skirt makes the figure look slimmer and adds lightness to the figure in its dynamics. A plain fabric or one with a small pattern is suitable for sewing.
The construction of a summer sundress pattern is made on the basis of an individual base in the following order:
- The details of the facings and straps are drawn on the front and back.
- A cutout line is drawn on the shelf, turning into a wrap on the symmetrical side.
- On the back, the pattern is spread apart by the amount of flare of the skirt.
- On the shelf, the bust dart is transferred to the armhole.
- As a result of construction, the following parts will be obtained: a shelf, a back, a strap of the shelves and a back.
The fabric for a summer wrap dress is chosen to be heavy and fold beautifully.
Sundress with open back
You can sew a sarafan for a woman with your own hands using an idea spied on the fashion catwalk. A summer product made of thick linen and cotton fabric can have a large neckline on the back and low armholes. There is a square neckline on the front, the bust dart is transferred to relief. The skirt is cut off at the waist.
The pattern is changed in the following order:
- The armhole line on the back and front is moved inward by 2 cm and becomes deeper at the bottom by 4 cm. A new armhole line is drawn.
- On the shelf, the dart is transferred to the armhole, and at the same time the relief line of the shelf bodice is drawn.
- The back cutout is drawn at a deep angle, according to the model.
The neckline and armholes of the open model are finished with facings.
On a Hungarian elastic band
A sarafan will help out a woman in the heat more than once. It is easy to sew it with your own hands if you have an elastic thread, its second name is "Hungarian elastic". The cut is the simplest: the back and the shelf are rectangles with a width of ½ Ob plus 6 cm, the length is according to the model.
Elastic thread is used for sewing. The bodice fabric is marked with horizontal lines at a distance of 1.5-2 cm. The side seams are stitched and overcast. The elastic thread is wound manually onto the bobbin. The shuttle clamp screw is loosened. A continuous stitch is laid along the marked lines. A drawstring is made on top, into which the elastic is threaded.
Straight from cotton
A summer dress made of breathable cotton or linen fabric is a must-have item in a summer wardrobe. Styles may vary, but they all have in common the relative freedom of the garment in the waist area and a straight side seam.
The basic pattern ignores waist darts and straightens side seams. The sewing takes into account the model features of the product. Particular attention should be paid to the edging of the armholes and the careful processing of the neckline.
Floor-length with American armhole
A dress with a cut-off armhole has deservedly enjoyed popularity for many years. The female figure looks spectacular in any size. The openness of the top will be balanced by a long floor-length skirt. Fabrics suitable are heavy, natural silk, knitwear and viscose, the color can be any.
New armhole lines are drawn on an individual basis:
- the lower part of the armhole deepens by 2 cm;
- The new armhole connects the lower part with the highest point of the shoulder seam in a smooth line.
The back is finished with a zipper or a droplet. The armhole on elastic fabrics is reinforced with an adhesive edge before edging, which prevents it from stretching.
A-line sundress
The trapeze model is similar to a straight sarafan, the main difference is the extended bottom line. The armhole cut at the top by 2 cm will emphasize the silhouette and make the summer item more comfortable for a hot day.
Along the chest and hip lines, allow 4-5 cm for a loose fit. The lower point of the armhole is connected to the hip width point and extended with a straight line until it intersects with the curve of the bottom.
The trapeze sundress is distinguished by a strong curvature of the bottom line. Only an allowance of no more than 2 cm can be carefully folded.
Half Sun
The side seams of the product are located at an angle of 90° to each other.
The half-sun sarafan is cut in two ways:
- The warp thread of the fabric coincides in direction with the central line of the back and the front. The model differs from the trapeze sarafan only in its greater width at the bottom.
- The side cuts of the front and back coincide in direction with the warp thread and the weft thread of the fabric. The product, cut on the bias, softly fits the figure and folds beautifully downwards.
For both types of cut, the bottom treatment will be important. It can be machine-stitched with a 0.5 cm hem allowance or overcast with a narrow zigzag.
Summer sundress without a pattern
It is easy to sew a sarafan for a woman with your own hands and without a pattern, especially if the fabric is elastic.
The fabric is folded in half so that the edges meet in the middle of the folded fabric. A favorite tank top with straps is used as the base.
Construction is carried out in the following sequence:
- The neckline, armhole and position of the straps are transferred from the sample, and the side cut is constructed according to the measurements of the figure.
- Taking into account the length of the strap, the height of the chest, waist, hips and hemline are measured.
- At the level of chest height, ¼ of the Og is deposited.
- The product should have some freedom at the waist and hips, from 2 cm to 1 cm.
- At the bottom, the width is designed according to the model.
Knitted fabric will require minimal processing; the edges do not need to be folded or overcast.
From a man's shirt
You can sew a sarafan for a woman with your own hands using a man's shirt made of good fabric. It is sewn without using a pattern in an hour, maximum two.
The easiest styles to make:
- The collar and fastener remain unchanged. The sleeves are cut off, an American armhole cut is formed, the side ones can be straight or flared at the bottom. A flounce at the bottom, cut from the cut sleeves, will help increase the length of the product.

- A rectangle of the middle part equal to the Ob plus 5 cm is cut out from the back and front of a large shirt. The side cuts are sewn together, a drawstring is processed along the top, and an elastic band is inserted. The same drawstring is made along the waist line. The bottom is processed, straps-ties are sewn on, and the sarafan is ready.
On a clothes elastic band
Similarly to the second model, a sarafan can be sewn from a men's shirt from any other summer fabric. The bottom, if the fabric allows, can be flared; a drawstring at the waist is unnecessary in this case.
With a tie around the neck
The cut is the simplest. You can use the pattern of an apron with a strap on the neck as a basis. Make many vertical cuts and spread the pattern. The freedom along the neckline can be removed in the gathering.
Make a hole on the side at the waistband level to thread the belt through. Fold the garment around the perimeter and sew on the belt and ties that tie around the neck.
Strapless
A strapless garment should fit well on the figure. If the fabric is heavy, a drawstring with elastic above the chest will not be enough.
A tight waist belt will keep you out of trouble.
Trapezoid
A simple trapeze sarafan has a cut of the same geometric figure. The side cuts are not sewn to the end for 10 cm - these are the future armholes of the product.
The top is gathered with a drawstring, and the cord threaded through it will be the straps of the sundress.
Decorative elements
The sarafan can be richly decorated.
The type of decoration depends on the style, purpose of the product and type of fabric:
- The decoration of a strict office model will be a finishing line. Many modern household machines have a function of a figured satin finishing line, such a decor diversifies the look of strict clothes, can be done with a thread in the tone of the fabric.
- The boho style involves an abundance of decoration. The product can be decorated with embroidery, applique, flounces and frills.
- A summer item can be decorated with details made of finishing fabric. Satin edgings, belts and straps on patterned fabric will look good.
Neckline and armhole processing
The top of the sarafan is laconic, so the processing must be technological and neat. In a summer sarafan, the top is processed with a bias binding made of the main fabric or trim. The neckline and armhole cuts are trimmed with open side seams.
A winter sarafan with one-piece straps is trimmed with a common facing detail for the neckline and armhole. The facing for the back and front is cut out separately.

The order of node processing:
- If necessary (for loose and stretchable materials), the facing is duplicated with adhesive fabric or adhesive interlining.
- The facings are sewn along the neckline cut separately to the back and the front. The seam is ironed or topstitched, which secures the position of the allowance cuts and thins the seam.
- Also, facings are sewn on the armholes (with an open side seam).
- The back and the front are joined along the shoulder seams. To do this, the closed back piece is inserted into the front piece, the neckline and armhole seams are carefully aligned, and a closed stitch is laid.
- The seam is carefully ironed and turned inside out.
Important! With a small strap width (up to 6 cm), the back and the shelf are sewn with a short line, 4 parts are stitched at once (two facing parts, the back and the shelf). Making a sarafan for a woman can become a starting point in developing the talents of a future fashion designer - they all started with sewing with their own hands.
