Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo

Scarf-hood considered a fashion accessory for women since 1990. There are many models that can be crocheted. Patterns and descriptions of different options will help you decide on the style and knit a beautiful product with your own hands.

What do you need to crochet a hooded scarf?

It is important to choose the right yarn for the job. Knitted fabric should be soft and pleasant to the body. Experienced craftsmen advise beginners to avoid coarse and textured threads. Things knitted from such materials can rub and irritate the skin.

It is better to give preference to yarn with a natural composition. A good option would be a thread consisting of cotton and wool. You can choose mixed types of yarn, where the amount of synthetic material is minimal, about 30%.

The table shows examples of popular brands of yarn that are suitable for knitting warm scarves with hoods:

Manufacturer Compound
Alpine Alpaca Wool 15%, acrylic 30%, alpaca 55%
YarnArt Jeans Cotton 65%, acrylic 35%
Mohair Classic Mohair 70%, acrylic 30%
Harmony Vita Wool 55%, acrylic 45%
Angora Gold Batik Mohair 10%, wool 20%, acrylic 70%
Alize Mohair Mohair 25%, wool 24%, acrylic 51%
Basso 100% wool
Sonata 50% wool, 50% acrylic

Synthetic threads can be used if the person who plans to wear the scarf-hood is not allergic to this material. Products made of plush yarn and microfiber look good. The only thing to consider is that these materials accumulate static electricity more than wool. Such things require more delicate care.

To comfortably use such scarves, you need antistatic sprays for clothes.

What else might be needed for work:

  • markers for marking the beginning and end of rows;
  • measuring tape;
  • scissors;
  • sewing threads and needles;
  • pins.

Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo

Scarves can be decorated with large buttons and beads. On simple models without a voluminous pattern, you can make appliques. The details are knitted from thin yarn or cut out of felt and sewn onto the product. The top of the hood can be decorated with pompoms, and the edges of the scarves with tassels made of the same yarn that was used to knit the product.

Knitting requires hooks of different sizes. The diameter of the tool depends on the thickness of the selected thread, the thicker it is, the larger the hook should be. If you choose a small tool, the knitted fabric will be tight, and if you take a large hook, then on the contrary, the fabric will be openwork and too elastic.

Conventional symbols in master classes

A crochet scarf-hood (patterns and descriptions are needed to avoid mistakes during the work process) can be knitted in different ways. Scarf models can be different, have different shapes and textures. All these features are described in detail in step-by-step instructions. For convenience, the masters use abbreviations.

Explanation of abbreviations that can be found in master classes:

  • VP – air loop.
  • SC – single crochet.
  • PS – half-column.
  • HSC – half double crochet.
  • ССН – double crochet.
  • ST2/N – double crochet.

How to knit different models of scarves with hoods can be read further in the article.

Instructions for knitting a hooded scarf from thick yarn with a simple pattern

Thick threads are voluminous, so knitting such a model takes less time. In addition, wool retains and preserves heat well, and such a scarf can be worn in winter.

To work you will need:

  • a skein of Basso yarn (100% wool) weighing 500 g;
  • hook No. 5.5 or 6;
  • scissors;
  • sewing thread and needle;
  • 2 large buttons.

The article provides diagrams and descriptions for crocheting a scarf-hood.

The shade of yarn and sewing threads should be in harmony with each other. Buttons can be chosen in a contrasting color.

How to knit a hooded scarf from thick yarn:

  1. Cast on 45 VP chains. In the 4th loop from the edge, knit 1 HDC. Knit PS to the end of the row. Turn the work over to the other side.
  2. 3 HDC knit through 1 loop. Then knit HDC until you have 62 loops. 3 VP knit PS and turn the workpiece to the other side.
  3. From the 3rd to the 20th row, you need to knit HDN. After completing each new row, turn the work over and continue knitting on the other side to get a relief pattern. Each row ends with 2 VP.
  4. In the last chain 2 VP do not need to be knitted. Cut the remaining thread and secure with a knot.
  5. Fold the resulting fabric in half with the right side facing inward.
  6. Knit the back seam PS and turn the workpiece inside out.
  7. Attach a new thread to the lower right corner of the piece and knit 2 VP.
  8. Knit a PSN along the bottom of the hood, without tightening the thread so that the edge remains even. You should get about 65 half-columns. Moving to the other edge of the product, you need to dial a chain of 23 VP.
  9. Knit a HDC through the 4th loop. Then knit 2 HDC in each loop to the end of the row. Turn the workpiece at the end of the work.
  10. Knit the next row in the same way.Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo
  11. Now you need to make a buttonhole. To do this, knit HDC in the first 3 columns of the previous row. Then skip 3 VP. Knit HDC to the end of the row. Finish the row with 2 VP.
  12. Knit in the same way as in point No. 9.
  13. Make a buttonhole again, step #11.
  14. Knit 3 more rows of HDC, turning the work after knitting each new chain. Fasten the thread and cut off the excess.

Sew buttons onto the scarf.

Scarf-hood with pockets

Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo

A crochet scarf-hood (patterns and descriptions of similar models may differ from each other depending on the pattern) with pockets will help warm not only your head and neck, but also your hands.

It is not difficult to knit. Beginners should choose a simple pattern to make it easier.

To work you will need:

  • a skein of Sonata threads (50% wool, 50% acrylic) weighing 600 g;
  • hook No. 4.5;
  • special marker for marking;
  • measuring tape;
  • sewing thread and a thick, large needle with a blunt end;
  • scissors.

First, you need to knit a scarf without a hood. You should dial a chain of 30 VP and knit until the length of the product reaches 200 cm.

Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo

Pattern repeat:

  1. Start a row with 4 VP. Alternate skipping 4 VP and 2 CCH, knitted into every 5th loop of the row.
  2. In the new row, knit, alternating 2 CCH and an arch of 4 VP.
  3. Knit all subsequent rows, alternating actions from points 1 and 2.
  4. At the end of the work, secure the thread with a knot and cut off the excess.

How to knit a hood:

  1. First, you need to find the middle of the knitted scarf and mark it with a marker.
  2. From this point, you should cast on enough loops to get 25 in both directions. The result will be a strip about 50 cm long.
  3. Next, you need to knit the same pattern as the scarf itself. The exact number of rows does not matter. The fabric should be about 30 cm high.
  4. Now the workpiece needs to be folded in half with the right side inside. The upper parts of the hood need to be sewn together with regular threads, using a needle. Turn the work inside out.

Now you need to process the edges of the hood.

The binding consists of 3 rows:

  1. Knit the first row to the end of the DC.
  2. Knit ST2/H to the end of the row, inserting the hook behind the back wall of the fabric and behind the front one by one.
  3. Knit a row of sc.

The pockets of this model are not knitted separately. The edges of the scarf need to be folded by 15 cm and the side seams connected. They can be crocheted or sewing threads and a needle can be used.

If you still want to knit the pockets separately, you need to measure the width of the scarf and make a chain of VP of the same length. Then you should measure the length of the palms. It is important that the pockets are deep, otherwise they will not warm your hands.

You will need to knit 2 rectangles according to the measurements taken, and then sew them to the edges of the product. You can use sewing threads or knit PS or crayfish step seams.

Model with a volumetric pattern

A crochet scarf-hood (diagrams and description will help beginners choose a suitable model according to the level of complexity) with a voluminous pattern will turn out warm and beautiful.

To work you will need:

  • a skein of Harmony Vita yarn (wool 55%, acrylic 45%) weighing 350 g;
  • hook No. 4 and 3;
  • markers for marking;
  • scissors.

  2. Work 1 ch to move to the next row. Work to the end of the sc chain. Finish the row with 1 slip stitch.
  3. 1 VP, knit 6 ST2/N in the 3rd loop from the beginning of the row. Then alternate this combination with 2 SC to the end of the row.
  4. Knit similarly up to row 7. Each chain should end with 1 slip stitch.
  5. From row 8 to 25, you need to knit rows as follows: 5 CCH, then 6 ST2/H coming out of 1 point. Alternate these combinations until the end of the row. You will get a voluminous pattern in the form of cones. Finish each row with 1 connecting column.
  6. The next 4 rows are knitted with a rib pattern alternating 1 SC2/H and 1 SC. You need to use hook No. 3.
  7. Fasten the thread and cut off the excess.
  8. Fold the workpiece in half and determine the location of the hood. Knit a line 50 cm long PS.
  9. Knit a square using the "bump" pattern (item #5). The height of the hood is about 35 cm.Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo
  10. Turn inside out, then fold the hood in half and sew the top edges.
  11. Turn the product inside out. Tie the hood with 3 rows of 1/1 elastic (item no. 6).

This scarf resembles a snood and is put on over the head.

Floral Scarf Hood

A scarf with a hood can look unusual and even extravagant. The model from this master class fits this description. It looks complicated, but in fact, such a scarf is easy to knit with your own hands.

The pattern of this product consists of separately connected floral motifs. 1 flower consists of 3 parts, each has its own pattern. For convenience, in the master class, the parts of the flower are named with the letters A, B, C.

What you will need for work:

  • a skein of Alta Moda Fine yarn (70% alpaca, 25% wool, 5% polyamide) weighing 100 g;
  • hook No. 5 and No. 3;
  • sewing thread and needle;
  • pins;
  • scissors.

Now all the parts need to be placed on top of each other (A, B, C) and sewn together. In total, about 200 ready-made flowers will be needed for the scarf. When all the motifs are ready, they need to be assembled into a product. First, assemble the scarf. You need to determine how long and wide it will be. The flowers are connected to each other with half-columns. It is recommended to use hook No. 3.

The scarf is then folded in half and pins are used to mark 25 cm sections on each side. The scarf is then unfolded and the flowers are connected until a square about 30 cm high is formed. The upper parts of the hood are sewn together with threads.

Scarf-hood with ears

A crochet scarf-hood (diagrams and description will help you knit the repeating elements the same) with ears is a fun model suitable for adults and children.

To work you will need:

  • 2 skeins of Alpine Alpaca yarn (wool 15%, acrylic 30%, alpaca 55%) in different colors;
  • hook No. 5 and 6.5;
  • markers;
  • sewing threads and needle.

First, you need to knit a scarf. To do this, use a thread of the base color and hook No. 5 to make a chain of 170 VP. Then knit 1 row of CCH, and the next 8 rows of CCH, inserting the hook behind the back wall of the fabric.

Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo

How to knit a hood:

  1. Mark the center of the scarf with a marker. Set aside 25 cm sections on each side. Knit this row of PS using hook No. 6.5.
  2. 2 VP, then knit the row to the end of the CCH. Finish the chain with 2 VP.
  3. 2 VP, knit the row to the end ST2/N.
  4. Alternate steps 2 and 3 until you finish knitting the hood. You should end up with a square 35 cm high.
  5. Fold the hood in half and sew the upper parts together with sewing thread.

Now you need to knit 2 ears separately. For work, use yarn of a different color and hook No. 5.

  1. Cast on a chain of 10 VP.
  2. 1 SC knit in the 3rd loop from the edge. Then knit the row to the end of the SC.
  3. Knit a new row with sc.
  4. 1 VP, then 2 SC together from 1 point. Alternate the combination until the end of the row.
  5. Knit sc to the end of the chain and the next 4 rows in the same way.
  6. Tie the ear with PS.

Knit the other ear in the same way. Sew the ears to the hood with threads. The ends of the scarf can be decorated with a pattern in the form of cat paws. To do this, you will need to knit 8 small circles and 2 large ones.

Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo

Small circle:

  1. Make a ring with amigura and knit 9 sc through it.
  2. The next row is knitted from 18 sc.
  3. Knit the final row with PS.

Big circle:

  1. Make an amigurumi ring, 2 HDC, then 1 dc. Work 2 more HDC, 2 dc and 1 HDC. Finish the row with a slip stitch.
  2. Work 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc. Alternate to end of row.
  3. 2 ch, then 1 hdc in 1 loop. Work 3 dc in the next loop, then 1 hdc in the next 2 loops.
  4. 2 dc in next 2 sts from edge of row. Work dc to end of row.

When the circles are ready, they need to be sewn onto the edges of the scarf. Large circles are placed at the bottom, and small ones, 4 at a time, at the top.

Pockets can be added to this model. Since the scarf is long, its edges can be folded by 15 cm and the seams can be processed. Then the applique in the form of cat paws should be sewn onto the pockets on top.

Mesh Pattern Scarf Hood

This model can be worn in spring and autumn. The scarf will be openwork and will serve as an additional accessory rather than an element of clothing that protects from the cold.

  6. Next, following points No. 3 and 4, you need to knit a square 30 cm high.
  7. The hood is folded in half and the upper parts of the PS are connected.

The edges of the scarf and hood need to be tied with PS.

Scarf-hood made of colorful square motifs

This scarf can be knitted from thick or thin yarn. You will need threads of 3 colors. The main color yarn, for example, green, should be about 200 g, and the additional shades of yarn, for example, yellow and white, 150 g each.

Materials and tools:

  • skein of Ascot yarn (57% wool, 25% viscose, 18% alpaca) 700 g;
  • hook No. 4;
  • scissors.

The squares are knitted according to 1 pattern, they differ from each other only in color. The description of the distribution of thread colors can be read below.

Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo

How to knit motifs:

  1. Cast on a chain of 6 VP and join into a ring.
  2. The next row consists of alternating 1 VP and 3 CCH.
  3. All subsequent rows are knitted similarly, but in the corners of the "squares" it is necessary to knit 6 CCH coming out 3 from 1 point. Between them knit 1 VP. A total of 6 rows.

How the colors are distributed:

  • Square A: The first 2 rows are white, the next 2 are yellow, the last ones are green.
  • Square B: The first rows are yellow, the next ones are white, the last 2 rows are green.
  • Square C: The first rows are green, the next ones are yellow, the last ones are white.

To assemble the work you will need about 70 motifs.

The scarf is assembled by 4 squares in a row. The length of the finished product is 150 cm. Then it needs to be folded in half, find the middle and put aside 25 cm on both sides. Mark this segment with markers. Then connect the squares in rows until you get a workpiece 30 cm high.

Crochet scarf-hood. Knitting patterns and description, photo

Next, fold the hood in half and connect its upper parts. All squares are connected with a PS. At the end, you need to tie the scarf and hood with threads of the main color along the edges. You can use PS or crab stitch binding.

A simple patterned scarf-hood can be crocheted in a few hours. More complex models will take more time, but they will look more impressive. To make the work beautiful and neat, you need to follow the step-by-step descriptions and carefully examine the graphic diagrams.
