The knitting pattern for a shawl with the "Frozen Leaves" pattern may look complicated. But in practice, if there is a detailed description, even an inexperienced person in this area can create such a product. It is thin, openwork and warms well if knitted from mohair or angora wool.
Necessary tools and materials
The “Frozen Leaves” shawl, the pattern of which is simple, is suitable for those who are going to take up openwork knitting for the first time.

To work you will need to prepare:
- thin yarn of any color (mohair, wool, angora);
- knitting needles 3–4 mm thick;
- steel crochet hook;
- scissors.
There are not many rules for choosing tools. They mainly concern the choice of knitting needles and the type of yarn to choose.
How to choose knitting needles | How to choose threads |
It is better to choose nickel-plated knitting needles, as they do not stain your hands or threads. | To ensure that the finished shawl wears well, you should test the threads for prickliness before purchasing: apply them to an accessible, sensitive area of the skin and take only the yarn that does not cause any unpleasant sensations. |
You can use aluminum knitting needles, they are light, but you should keep in mind that they can get very dirty. | Natural yarn, without adding hard pile, is better suited for knitting, but this is a matter of individual taste. |
It is advisable to choose knitting needles with cables, like those for knitting sweaters. |
Most often, such shawls are knitted from kid mohair. You will need 50 g (500 m skein). Usually, when buying yarn, you can ask the seller how much other thread to take if you need such a quantity of kid mohair. Most often, the seller can advise
Schemes with description of works for beginners
The Frozen Leaves shawl, sometimes called the Dancing Leaves pattern, is made using the same rules as other items. Therefore, the basic terminology in describing the process is the same as in describing other knitted items.
Knit stitches are those that are knitted with the yarn behind the work. Purl stitches are knitted with the yarn in front of the work. Slipping a stitch at the beginning of a row means that it does not need to be knitted, but simply taken from one needle to another. Yarn overs are made by throwing the yarn over the needle, as if creating an extra stitch.
The names of loops are usually abbreviated for convenience:
Name | Reduction |
Purl stitch | i. p., i., izn |
Yarn over | n., nak |
Face loop | l.p., l., persons |
If the pattern has a designation meaning "no loop" or "loop missing", knitting continues as if this designation is not there. It is drawn so that the pattern retains the correct shape. For example, if it is marked 2 l. p., no loop, 1 i. p., then you need to knit 2 l. p., 1 i. p.
There is a special method of casting on stitches for shawls, for which there is a diagram, it should be described separately for clarity.
Set of loops using the ribbon method
This is a universal method of casting on stitches that is used for knitting shawls.

It allows you to make a smooth, neat edge of the product.
- Take an additional thread and a crochet hook. It is desirable that it be brighter than the main yarn.
- Cast on 3 stitches with the hook.
- Using the main yarn, knit 3 loops from these loops. Simply put 1 on the knitting needle, then knit the next 2.
- Knit the next 14 rows: remove 1 stitch, knit 2.
- From the edge, pick up 7 loops. To do this, pass the knitting needle through one of the edge loops and knit the thread.
- Pull out the spare thread and cast on the released loops onto the knitting needle. The result should be 13 pieces.
- Mark the center loop with a pin or marker.
After this, they move on to knitting the shawl itself.
Knitting the beginning of the shawl
The knitting pattern for a shawl with the “Frozen Leaves” pattern is one of the easiest openwork items to make.
To make everything work out, knit the odd rows according to the pattern, and the even rows all the same, remove 1 loop, knit the rest as purl:
- The loops are cast on using the ribbon method.
- Knit a set-up row: remove 1 loop, knit 2 front loops, 3 back loops, 3 front loops.
- Remove 1 loop and knit a row with purl loops. It is customary to ignore these rows and start immediately with the next one. On the diagrams it is designated as No. 3
- Make row #3 according to the pattern. Remove 1 loop, knit 2 knits, yarn over, 1 knit, yarn over, 1 central loop as if it were a front loop, then repeat the pattern in mirror image, yarn over, 1 knit, yarn over, 3 knits.
- Knit the 4th row, remove 1 loop, knit the entire row with purl loops.
- In the 5th row, knit the pattern again: remove 1 loop, knit 2 knits, 1 purl, yarn over, 1 knit, yarn over, 1 purl, 1 knit, knit the central loop. Then repeat the already knitted pattern in mirror image: 1 knit, 1 i., yarn over, 1 knit, yarn over, 1 i., 3 knits.
- Knit the 6th row, remove 1 loop, purl the rest.
- Go to row #7. Remove 1 loop, knit 2, knit 2 purl, yarn over, 1 knit, yarn over, 2 purl, 1 knit, then the center, knit. Then repeat the pattern in mirror image.

The diagram shows the section that should be repeated several times and how many times it should be done. After the central loop, the pattern should be repeated in mirror image.
How to close loops
The loops are closed with a hook, following the numbers on the diagram.
Step by step:
- Take the required number of loops on the hook. The diagram shows arches with numbers, they indicate how many of them should be on the tool.
- Pull the thread through the loops, there should be 2 loops left on the hook.
- Pull the thread through these loops to form a single crochet.
- Knit 7 air loops.
- Repeat until row ends.
- Fasten the thread and cut it off so that 7-10 cm remains.
Please note that at the beginning and end of the row you need to knit 3 edge loops together, not 2.
Secrets for Beginners
The “Frozen Leaves” shawl (the pattern is provided for reference) is not a difficult one.

Use wooden knitting needles for knitting. | The yarn should not be too fluffy. | To count the number of rows and loops, use the counter |
For beginners, here are a few tips to make work and care for the finished product easier:
- You should buy yarn and knitting needles only in specialized stores, this is the only way to guarantee that you will buy a quality product.
- It is better to buy a skein of wool larger than necessary, so as not to tie the thread in the middle of knitting. On such a shawl, the joints will be clearly visible.
- Beginners are advised to choose wool that is not too fluffy for knitting, as it is difficult to unravel.
- The number of rows or stitches can be difficult to remember. To avoid confusion, you should write down how many you have knitted, or mark directly on the diagram what has already been done.
- To navigate the pattern, it is useful to have in front of your eyes not only the knitting pattern, but also a photograph of the finished product, so you can understand whether it is working correctly.
- To prevent the ball of yarn from rolling around the table or your lap or falling onto the floor while knitting, place it in a bag, tie it up, and pull the thread through the hole near the knot. Hang the bag on the drawer handle closest to the work area, on the back of a chair, or in another easily accessible place.
- Although the shawl is usually knitted in a single color, in pastel colors, the product looks spectacular when made of bright melange threads. This gives the product a unique look, it is almost impossible to get 2 absolutely identical shawls.
Experts do not recommend using plastic knitting needles, especially old ones, as they break easily and this can happen at the most inopportune moment. You can give preference to wooden tools, they are light, strong and do not get dirty.
But, firstly, they are not made with cables, and secondly, low-quality examples will scratch your hands or ruin the thread due to uneven surfaces.
The finished shawl should first be wetted with water and a mild detergent for washing wool, rinsed and laid on a horizontal surface to dry, no need to wring out the product. Although some advise using shampoo, only specialized products should be used.
Shawls knitted according to the "Frozen Leaves" pattern will not only be a good gift for family and friends. It is often made for oneself, as it is a warm, stylish thing that can replace a scarf in winter.
