Broken heart on black background. Pencil drawings

A broken heart is a symbol of the mental suffering that a person feels when they fail in love. Artists draw such hearts in black and white tones, using an empty or dark background. These techniques help to more accurately reflect negative emotions in the drawing.

Beginning artists need to consider several instructions on how to draw on this topic in order to learn how to transfer negative feelings onto paper using simple pencils.

What you need for drawing

Supplies needed for drawing:

Item Description
Paper A drawing album, as well as writing or drawing sheets, will do.
Eraser A good option is a rubber band with soft and abrasive sides.
Sharpener To keep your desktop free of debris, you can purchase a sharpener with a removable container.
Cotton pads Needed for shading graphite on large parts of the drawing.
Cotton swabs Useful for shading strokes within small elements of the picture.

When buying pencils, you should pay attention to the country in which they were made. The favorites of experienced artists are Russian and American-made tools. They leave clear lines, the graphite does not crumble, and the strokes are easy to shade. Beginner artists will need 4 pencils of different degrees of hardness.

In Russia, the degree of hardness is indicated by numbers and letters, in the USA only by numbers:

  • very hard – 2T or No. 4;
  • hard – T or No. 3;
  • hard-soft – TM or No. 2;
  • soft – M or No. 1.

You can use tools from different sets at the same time. A soft pencil will do for shading the background, but to get a deeper, darker color, you will need a Russian tool marked "6M". You can also use it to draw small details.

White heart with a crack

A broken heart on a black background can be drawn using a stencil made of thin cardboard. The cardboard blank will help to carefully shade the strokes in the background.

Procedure:

  • Draw a heart on thin cardboard. Cut it out.
  • Place the blank in the center of the sheet on which the drawing will be made.
  • Trace the heart along the outline.
  • Remove the workpiece.

A broken heart on a black background can be depicted as a white heart with a crack
  • Now you need to shade the background in 3 layers, using different pencils. You don't need to press on the tools. The lines should be smooth. They should be applied starting from the outline, gradually moving closer to the edges of the paper.
  • Using a hard pencil, densely shade the entire background area.
  • Place the cardboard blank in place of the drawn heart so that when shading you do not accidentally go beyond its contours. Shade the strokes well.
  • Remove the workpiece. Shade the background with a hard-soft pencil, overlapping the shading of the hard pencil to the middle.
  • Apply cardboard and blend the strokes.
  • Using a soft pencil, darken half of the shading done with a hard-soft pencil.
  • Apply the workpiece and blend the strokes.
  • Remove the cardboard. If graphite gets on the white heart, it needs to be erased with an eraser.

Draw large cracks with a hard-soft pencil and small ones with a hard pencil.

Alcohol fills the wound

They say about some people: "A broken heart is drowned in alcohol." In a drawing, this phrase can be reflected literally by drawing a heart with a break, into which alcohol is poured from a bottle.

How to draw:

  • Using a hard pencil, draw the shape of the bottle.
  • Draw a heart at the bottom. Depict a deep crack inside it.
  • Draw liquid inside the bottle. Add a stream flowing out of the neck.
  • Draw the fluid in the heart rift. Shade it throughout the drawing.

  • Use a hard-soft pencil to shade the background of the picture. Color the transparent part of the bottle. Blend the strokes.
  • Draw the waves of liquid, as well as the drops where the stream touches the heart.
  • Press lightly on the pencil and shade the heart. Blend the lines.
  • Draw labels on the bottle and color them in.
  • Use a soft pencil to outline the picture.
  • Draw the neck on the bottle.
  • Select the drops.

This same version of the drawing can be made in color.

Mark the highlights on the bottle and draw a barcode on the bottom label.

A burst vessel in the shape of a heart

The heart is like a vessel. Love fills it. But in case of failure, the vessel bursts.

How to draw a heart in the form of a glass bottle:

  • In the center of the sheet, draw a heart shape using a hard pencil.
  • Draw the neck of the bottle and outline the shape of the cork inside it.
  • Use an eraser to erase extra lines.
  • Finish drawing the walls of the vessel and the liquid inside it.

  • Mark the place where the glass broke. Draw the pouring liquid.
  • Shade the part of the cork that is behind the glass.
  • Paint the top of the contents of the vessel.
  • Blend the strokes.
  • Using a hard-soft pencil, without pressing, color the liquid inside the vessel, and color the liquid outside, pressing lightly on the pencil so that the lines are darker.
  • Apply a little pressure on the pencil to highlight the shadow on the right side of the bottle.
  • Shade the top of the cork.
  • Use a soft pencil to draw waves on the surface of the liquid.

  • Finish drawing the cracks on the glass.
  • Draw the texture of the cork.
  • Use an eraser to lighten the glare on the glass, on the left side. Clean the background.

Trace the outline of the picture with a soft pencil.

Wounded heart with a bandage

Artists depict a broken heart not only as broken into two parts, but also as wounded. The abrasions covered with a bandage and the hammered nails symbolize the pain of lost love.

How to draw a picture like this:

  • Using a hard pencil, draw a heart shape in the center of the sheet.
  • Draw some drips and drops below.

Broken heart on black background. Pencil drawings

  • Draw a patch on the right side. For now, it can be depicted schematically, as 2 wide stripes superimposed on each other. Highlight the middle.
  • Draw a nail on the left side. First draw an oval cap, then its edges. The cap of the nail should be thicker than its end, which enters the heart.
  • Draw drops of blood under the nail.
  • Draw the shape of the crease on the heart through which the nail passes.
  • Using a hard-soft pencil, apply thin strokes to show shadows on the fold and also on the patch.
  • Shade the bottoms of all the drops, as well as the heart at the bottom.
  • Show the shadow under the patch. Blend the strokes.
  • Use a soft pencil to highlight the shadow on the nail head and underneath it, and draw the metallic texture with short lines.

The bandage in the broken heart drawing can be replaced with a bandage
  • Without pressing on the pencil, shade the upper part of the heart. Blend the strokes.
  • Draw bumps and a few small drops above the nail.
  • Trace the outline of the nail. Draw a clearer shadow on the fold that holds it.
  • Outline the patch. Highlight the shadow and the depressions in its center more vividly.
  • Draw cracks on the heart.

Use smooth strokes to outline the drawing. Clean the background with an eraser.

Metal ball strike

Failures in love cause emotional pain. Most often, people describe these feelings by comparing them to a heavy blow. This metaphor can be depicted in a picture.

How to draw a heart broken by a metal ball:

  • Use a hard pencil to draw a heart shape.
  • Use a thin line to show the location of the chain that will hold the ball.
  • Draw the ball.
  • Use a zigzag line to mark the broken part of the heart.
  • Use an eraser to erase the lines inside the ball and outside the zigzag line.
  • Draw a loop on the ball to which the chain will be attached.

Broken heart on black background. Pencil drawings

  • Add chain links. They need to be drawn by alternating rings and small ovals, which will represent the sides of the sideways links.
  • Draw fragments flying in all directions. They should be of different shapes and sizes.
  • Use a hard-soft pencil to shade the edges of the heart.
  • Darken the top and left part of the ball.
  • Blend all lines.
  • Show the shadow on the chain links with vertical strokes.
  • Use a soft pencil to draw hatching along the contour of the heart. Blend the strokes.
  • Darken the lower part of the ball, as well as its right side. Blend the lines.

Broken heart on black background. Pencil drawings

  • Use short strokes to show the shadow under the fragments so that they look three-dimensional. The shadow should only be under those pieces that are drawn on the background of the heart and the ball. There is no need to indicate the shadow under the fragments drawn on a white background.
  • Trace the outline of the drawing. Draw the chain links more clearly.
  • Draw several thin, long cracks on the heart.

Use an eraser to clean the background. Use a sharp pencil to draw in the cracks on the large fragments.

Broken heart on black background

A broken white heart on a black background can be drawn without using stencils.

Procedure:

  • Using a hard pencil, draw a large heart in the center of the sheet.
  • Finish drawing a large fracture with deep cracks.
  • Add drips and large drops at the bottom.
  • Use an eraser to erase extra lines.
  • Use a hard-soft pencil to shade the edges of the dripping liquid.
  • Pressing lightly on the pencil, darken the lower parts of the drops. Blend the strokes.

Broken heart on black background. Pencil drawings

  • Use a soft pencil to shade the background. The lines should be drawn following the shape of the heart. Do not press on the pencil. The shading should be dense, but not intense.
  • Paint over the break.
  • Blend all strokes thoroughly.
  • Using a very soft pencil (6M), shade the background again, using the same pattern. Blend all the lines.
  • Draw the drops more clearly and mark the shadow on them.
  • Use an eraser to clear the white heart.
  • Lightly shade its edges with a hard-soft pencil. Blend the lines.

Use the softest pencil to outline the drawing. Draw all the cracks.

Repairing a Broken Heart

A broken heart on a black background can be highlighted by leaving a wide white outline. This style of drawing can be seen in the example of a drawing of hands sewing a broken heart with threads.

How to draw:

  • Using a hard pencil, draw a heart shape in the center of the paper.
  • Draw the hand and the bent little finger below.
  • Use thin lines to indicate the position of the fingers of the other hand.
  • Use small circles to show the location of the joints of the thumb and index finger.
  • Connect the circles with smooth lines.
  • Draw the rest of the fingers.
  • Use an eraser to remove excess lines.
  • Show the bumps on the palm of your left hand.

Broken heart on black background. Pencil drawings

  • Mark the position of the thread and needle.
  • Using thin, barely noticeable lines, outline the drawing, leaving 0.5-1 cm from all contours.
  • Use a hard-soft pencil to outline the shadows on your hands, using short strokes. There is no need to blend them.
  • Show small highlights on the upper right side of the heart.
  • Shade the heart on the left side. Add a few strokes below. These lines should not go beyond the outline drawn with a hard pencil.
  • Blend the strokes.
  • Using a soft pencil, draw a shadow on the heart, lightly shading its left side.
  • Paint the background by drawing transverse lines.
  • Use the soft end of the eraser to remove the white outline if any accidental strokes have been applied to it.

  • Using a very soft pencil (6M), draw cracks and seams in the center of the heart.
  • Select the thread and needle.

Trace the outline of the picture. The white lines should remain untraced.

Breakup

A broken heart on a black background can be drawn using only 2 pencils: hard-soft and very soft. This method of drawing is used to create simple pictures, without fine detailing and shadows. For example, you can consider the description of a drawing with an image of a heart that burst due to a break in relations between 2 people.

How to draw:

  • Draw a large heart with a hard-soft pencil.
  • Draw a deep crack in the center of the figure.

Broken heart on black background. Pencil drawings

  • At the top, on each half of the heart, there will be a picture of a seated person. You need to depict the heads of people in the form of circles.
  • Use thin lines to indicate the positions of the arms, legs and bodies.
  • Draw the body shapes more precisely. For a man, draw muscular arms, broad shoulders, large calves and feet. For a woman, finish drawing the shape of the hairstyle, highlight the chest and waist. Draw the feet and calves.
  • Use an eraser to remove excess lines.
  • Using a very soft pencil (6M), outline the picture. Fill in the cracks inside the heart.

Fill the background with small, random strokes. The background behind the heart and the people should be darker than other parts of the picture, so these areas need denser shading.

Blade in the Heart

A broken heart on a black background (or a wounded heart) can be drawn using simple pencils and a thick marker, black color.

Procedure:

  • In the center of the sheet, using a hard pencil, draw a heart. It will lie down, so its left edge should look larger than the right.
  • Draw a blade stuck into the center of the heart. Mark its middle, shape the edges.
  • Erase extra lines.
  • Shade the heart. Blend the lines.
  • Show metallic shine on the blade by applying diagonal strokes. Blend the lines with a cotton swab.
  • Use a hard-soft pencil to shade the left side of the heart. Blend the strokes.
  • Use the soft end of the eraser to lighten the highlights.

The blade in the heart in the picture can be replaced with a knife
  • Draw bloody streaks.
  • Draw the edges of the wound, under the blade.
  • Use a soft pencil to shade the background tightly. Blend the strokes well.
  • Draw drops of blood on the blade.
  • Use a very soft pencil (6M or 8M) to color the edges of the drawing. Blend the lines.
  • Draw a shadow under the heart.

Use a marker to outline the heart, as well as the edges and center of the blade. There is no need to outline the drips and drops of blood.

A wound covered with a ribbon

Ribbons and stitches that pull together cracks in the heart symbolize attempts to forget about failures in love, to “heal” wounds and move on with life.

Broken heart on black background. Pencil drawings

How to make a drawing with such meaning:

  • Draw a heart with a hard pencil.
  • Divide it into 2 parts with a thin horizontal line.
  • Draw loops from the bow at the top.
  • Use dots to mark the holes through which the ribbon will be threaded.
  • Draw the crossed ends of the ribbon. In places where it should be threaded through the holes, you need to draw stripes slightly narrower.
  • Add 2 hanging, twisted ends of ribbon.
  • Draw a large fracture under the flight deck.

Broken heart on black background. Pencil drawings

  • Draw smaller wounds on other parts of the heart. Draw cross-shaped stitches over them.
  • Use an eraser to erase extra lines.
  • Use a soft pencil to outline the drawing.
  • Shade the ribbon, repeating its curves.
  • Darken the base of the bow and the places where the ribbon intersects, applying denser shading.
  • Mark the holes where the ribbon is threaded.
  • Darken the crack under the tape, as well as other wounds and seams.
  • Shade the heart using horizontal strokes. The shading should be denser towards the edges.

Using a pencil marked "6M", trace the heart along the contour, applying intermittent strokes. Clean the background with an eraser.

Broken Heart with Wings

The wings of a broken heart symbolize a person's willingness to love and start new relationships despite failure in the previous ones.

How to draw a picture like this:

  1. Using a hard pencil, draw a heart in the center of the sheet.
  2. Draw a crack inside it. Erase the extra lines.
  3. Sketch the shape of the wings.
  4. Draw drops at the bottom.
  5. Using a hard-soft pencil, highlight large groups of feathers on the wings, drawing zigzags and sharp angles pointing downwards.
  6. Add highlights to the drops.
  7. Use an eraser to remove excess lines.
  8. Mark the shadows on the drawing. Darken the drops, as well as the edges of the heart inside and outside. Show the shadow on the wings.
  9. Use a soft pencil to shade the edges of the crack and also highlight the dark areas on the inside of each wing.
  10. Draw small cracks.

Trace the outline of the drawing using short strokes. Clean the background with an eraser.

Tips for Beginning Artists

To make your drawings beautiful, you need to listen to the advice of experienced artists:

  • It is not necessary to draw a heart of a perfect, even shape. In drawings with such a theme, it should look broken, wounded, crumpled. Therefore, errors in maintaining symmetry will not spoil the drawing, but on the contrary, will add individuality to it.
  • When shading round shapes, such as drops, tops of hearts, or balls, you need to draw the lines in one direction. This technique will help give such figures volume.
  • To avoid smearing the graphite with your hand, place a clean sheet of paper underneath it.
  • You can't rub the paper too hard with an eraser. If the sheet starts to roll up and become thinner, it's better to take another one and do the job from the beginning. The damaged areas of the paper will be very noticeable after applying the hatching.

There are many ways to depict a broken heart in a drawing. If the artist decides to draw a heart on a black background, he should think about the composition in advance and decide how to highlight the main parts of the picture so that they do not merge with the background.
