Puppet theatre is a bright example of one of the art forms. In this direction, actors are replaced by puppets controlled by people. As can be seen from the chronicles and ancient drawings, this art originated in ancient times.

In the territories of different countries, their own special traditional national puppets and certain types of performances appeared.

In the performances of theaters of this genre, the puppets can be three-dimensional, semi-three-dimensional or flat in appearance. They are set in motion by puppeteers or various automatic mechanical devices.

What you need for drawing

First of all, you need to choose the right workplace. It should be well lit, preferably with natural light from a window. For stronger lighting, it is best to use a blue or cold blue lamp.

To draw a modern image of scenes from plays, various dolls and a theater poster, you will need pencils of different types marked H and B.

The higher the H value, the harder the pencil and the paler the line. The higher the B value, the softer the lead and the rich black color.

When choosing paper, it is better to choose a thicker and smoother sheet, with a value from 90 to 110 g / m². When drawing on such paper, it is easier to correct mistakes and remove unnecessary small details. Sheets intended for drawing or paper for graphics are suitable.

You should also prepare erasers, it is best to use soft and neutral colored ones. You should not give preference to multi-colored or hard types of erasers.

You can sharpen pencils with a regular sharpener, they can be small hand-held or stationary, attached to a table, working on the principle of a meat grinder. To draw lines, you may need a straight ruler, for curved lines - a figured artistic ruler.

Puppet theatre (the drawing can be done with a pencil) consists of performances of various forms and is determined by the types of main characters and their control systems. Puppets can be from 5 cm to 3 m in size.

Scenes from "The Golden Key"

The puppet theatre (a drawing of the main characters can be found in the presentation of the play) quite often presents famous works.

With Buratino

The puppeteer will control the Buratino puppet in a low-down manner. For this purpose, a thread will be tied to each part of the puppet's body, fixed on a wooden cross-shaped base.

Or each thread can be separately tied to the fingers of the puppeteer, in which case each individual finger will be responsible for the movement of a separate part of the fairy-tale character's body.

To draw a poster for a performance based on the work "The Golden Key", you need to sketch the main character of the work, Buratino:

Draw a circle in the middle of the sheet of paper; later it will serve as Pinocchio’s head.
Inside the circle, mark the eyes with ovals and draw pupils in them.
Between the eyes, slightly lower, draw a long, narrow triangle to depict a long, sharp nose.
Draw a smiling mouth under the nose, and circles of blush on the sides of Buratino’s cheeks.
On the forehead, depict wavy locks that stick out from under the striped cap of the wooden man, and at the end, depict a large round pompom.

Pinocchio's neck is marked with a small rectangle that ends at the shoulder line.
Using rectangles, draw arms spread out to the sides, ending with 5 fingers; in 1 hand, a wooden Pinocchio holds a golden key.
The body is depicted in the form of a trapezoid, expanding towards the bottom, it will depict a shirt. In the upper part of the shirt, the collar lines of the shirt are marked.
The buttons on the shirt are shown as circles.
Buratino's legs are marked by narrow, elongated rectangles that end in boots with upward-curved toes.

Often, throughout the entire theatrical act, 2 puppets are constantly located on different sides of the stage near the curtain, in which case their control can be lateral, invisible to the audience.

To draw a sad Pierrot from one side of the stage, you should follow these steps step by step:

Make a sketch of the main circles to depict the boy's clothes and appearance in his wide clothes, with overly long sleeves.
In the circle that will serve as Pierrot's face, draw eyes with ovals. Color 2/3 of the ovals at the bottom with a black pencil, leave the top transparent.
Draw raised eyebrows above the eyes.
Draw the nose using a small horizontal line.

To make the mouth look sad, lower the corners of the mouth down.
Draw a wide collar made of triangles on Pierrot's neck.
From the collar, mark out a trapezoid tunic with 2 large buttons in the middle.
Draw large hanging sleeves on the sides of the tunic.
From the bottom of the tunic are wide flared trousers and pointed boots.
All unnecessary details are erased with an eraser.
The collar and tunic must be blue, shoes yellow.
Shade Pierrot's face slightly with brown color.

To draw Karabas Barabas from the opposite side of the stage, you need to:

Using a large circle, mark the director's body.
Above the large circle, use a small circle to indicate the head of the fairy-tale hero.
On the face, note the big nose, small evil eyes and a wide scary smile.
Starting from the area between the nose and mouth, draw long wavy lines depicting a thick, long beard.
On top of the head, use a narrowed rectangle to mark a cylinder tied with a ribbon.
Large sleeves should stick out from the thick body in different directions, from which the arms are visible.
The body is depicted wearing a shortened vest, unbuttoned at the stomach.
From the lower border of the body, thick short legs are drawn, shod in heavy shoes.
Erase extra lines and mark all necessary borders with a rich black pencil.
Start coloring:

vest	yellow

With Malvina

In the next scene, Malvina may appear, moving around the stage and gesturing with her hands; for this, she must have a wire mount fixed on top of a cross-shaped wooden device.

With its help, she will be able to move her arms and legs, turn and move in the other direction.

To draw Malvina on stage in the middle between the curtains, you need to follow the step-by-step instructions:

Outline the oval of the face and eyes. To make the face slightly tilted downwards, shift the facial features down and to the right.
On top, outline wavy hair falling onto the forehead and along the face.
On the face, mark thick eyelashes, a small nose (using 2 dots) and plump lips.
Starting from the shoulder line, where the neck ends, outline a thin torso.

From the waist line, draw a wide, trapezoid-shaped skirt to the floor.
Decorate long thin arms with wide, puffy sleeves on top.
Erase the additional working lines and outline the resulting silhouette with a black pencil.
Colour the drawing. Shade the fairytale heroine's hair with a blue pencil. Make the dress brown with red and white inserts. Shade a small blush on the cheeks.

Scene with the glove puppet Petrushka

In puppet theater, the main characters of the plot are often gloved, and three fingers on a person's hand are used to hold the puppets, except for the ring and middle fingers. Thus, a puppet, for example, Petrushka, can move and make various movements.

To draw such a character, you should perform the following actions:

Draw a circle on top of the sheet; later it will serve as Petrushka’s head.
In the middle, mark the place for a large nose, on the sides at the level of the nose, mark the places for the ears.
There should be a smiling mouth under the nose, reaching almost to the ears on the sides.
On the sides of the nose and slightly above, there are eyes, and above them on the forehead there are several locks of hair.
On the back of Petrushka's head, a triangular cap is drawn, slightly tilted downwards.
From the neck, slanted lines are drawn, depicting the shoulders of the fairy-tale hero. From their ends, vertical lines are drawn down to the border of the sheet of paper, thus drawing the cloak of the character of the play.

In the middle of the cloak is the hand of a puppeteer supporting the fairy tale hero.
The actor's index finger is inserted into a special recess located on Petrushka's neck.
The thumb and little finger are inserted into the holes of the hero's improvised hands, which are located at the intersection of the vertical lines with the shoulder strip.

Theatre stage

The puppet theatre (the drawing can be coloured with coloured pencils) can be depicted on a poster or programmes with a list of performances.

To depict a theatre stage with a performance taking place on it, you need to perform the following actions step by step:

Visually divide the sheet of paper into 3 parts, draw a horizontal line at the height of 1/3 of the part from the bottom. The line will further separate the puppeteers from the fairy tale character dolls.
The horizontal line on both sides should be continued with a curtain band.

Draw curtains along the sides of the sheet, all the way up and down, secured with tape.
In the background of the painting, depict the interior of the palace.
Below the horizontal line, mark the common features of the two actors, a boy and a girl, who will direct the actions of the puppets.
The puppeteers are depicted with their hands raised and their eyes directed at the puppets.
Above the horizontal line are depicted dolls dressed in the hands of puppeteers.
The girl has a princess on her hand, wearing a crown and a fairy-tale sarafan.
The boy holds dressed dolls in the form of a king and a prince in his arms.

Riding dolls

Riding dolls with images of animals are made in approximately the same way. They differ from each other only in the upper part, namely the head.

To draw a doll, you need to follow these instructions:

In the middle of the sheet, draw a circle, which will later become the animal’s head.
Draw the eyes, mouth, nose and eyebrows in a circle.
On the outer side of the circle, mark the location of the ears.
Under the circle, after drawing the neck line, draw vertical stripes that will indicate the animal’s spread paws.
Draw almost vertical stripes with a slight expansion towards the bottom. This is done to indicate the animal's dress, which will cover the puppeteer's hands from the audience.

Depending on what animal is to be placed in the drawing, hooves or claws can be drawn instead of paws.

The shape of the head may change, for example, for a rabbit it may remain round, for a pig it must be made more square, with a thickening at the level of the cheeks. Puppet theaters everywhere stage folk tales and plays written by playwrights.

Children's first acquaintance with theatrical art occurs through drawings on posters and programs. They help to form artistic taste and teach perception of the surrounding world.
