Necessary tools and materials

The owl pillow can have any size and appearance, depending on the type of stencil and fabric used. The product can be given a round or square shape, or made in the form of a bird or with an applique applied to the material.

Before creating a decorative item, you need to carefully think over the image of the bird, marking the places for the beak and wings. The size of the product must be selected individually. Everything will depend on the volume of the fabric used.

To create a pillow you will need scissors, a ruler, a knife and a simple pencil.

List of basic tools and materials:

  • beads or buttons to imitate eyes;
  • pencil with scissors;
  • filler;
  • thread material of various shades with needles;
  • dense fabric material of various tones;
  • a stencil that is applied to 1 mm thick paper and has seam allowances.

The pillow is filled with holofiber or synthetic padding.

For filling, it is best to use synthetic padding, because it conducts heat well, is soft, voluminous and does not require complex care. In this case, it is recommended to use holofiber or synthetic padding.

When choosing fabric material, you need to consider 3 parameters:

Parameter Peculiarities
Purpose of the product The material can perform a relaxing, supporting or decorative function. If you need to make an orthopedic product, it is better to use natural, durable, simple material in the form of satin, linen and teak. Synthetic and combined fibers with different textures are suitable for creating a decorative item.
Density and structure of the filler If the filler is down, it is best to take a material with a dense thread weave. Due to this, the feathers will not fall out of the cover. For wool filler, a smooth fabric material in the form of satin is suitable. If the filler is synthetic, you can use fabric of any texture and weave.
Pillow size If a bulky item is placed in a synthetic material, the pillow will not let air through. If the item is small and has a thin cambric cover, the pillow will not hold its shape. In this case, the size of the pillow and the cover should match.

Denim, felt and terry fabrics are often used to sew pillows.

Terry material has an unusual soft structure that can absorb moisture and quickly remove it from the surface. Due to this, this type of fabric is suitable for creating towels, dressing gowns and other home textiles.

Positive qualities of terry material:

  • natural material is pleasant to the body, so it will not provoke the occurrence of uncomfortable reactions;
  • will not shrink or fade after washing;
  • easy to care for and does not require much time to dry;
  • characterized by good moisture absorption;
  • Allows air to pass through well so that the skin can breathe.

Negative qualities of matter:

  • if the fibers are natural, the fabric is dense and will not stretch;
  • clings to surrounding things, which leads to deterioration of the appearance.

Felt fabric is a homogeneous material with a mechanical source of origin. It is presented in the form of a dense mixture of felted fibers, the structure of which does not contain interwoven thread material. Due to this, felt is a non-woven type of fabric.

Denim material is one of the types of natural cotton fabric. The material has high density and resistance to mechanical deformation and wear.

Advantages of the material:

  • hygroscopic, so that the skin can breathe;
  • has a long service life, reaching approximately 10 years if the fabric is properly cared for;
  • strong, therefore suitable for making workwear;
  • natural, because the original fabric is 100% cotton;
  • Easy to care for, therefore suitable for machine washing.

Disadvantages of the fabric:

  • In its original form, the material is very hard, so stores sell a softened and processed version;
  • may shrink, like other natural materials (however, the material is easy to wear in).

How to make a pattern yourself

The owl pillow requires making a stencil so that the finished product has the correct shape and is beautiful. Today, there are many ready-made templates that you can use. However, if these options are not suitable, you can make the pattern yourself.

Necessary tools and materials:

  • newspaper and wallpaper sheet in one spread;
  • eraser, felt-tip pen and pencil;
  • ruler with scissors and compass.

First, you need to determine the shape and height of the future product. Often, 30 cm is considered a suitable size. When creating a rectangular decorative item, it is advisable to make the size 25x40 cm.

It is more convenient to make a pattern on special paper

Pattern creation algorithm:

  1. Draw the figure on the wallpaper sheet, taking into account the selected parameters.
  2. Fold the newspaper spread in half along the indicated line. Draw 1/2 of the bird using a felt-tip pen, relative to the fold.
  3. Avoid making sharp transitions. If you want to make ears, these details should not be sharp, but smooth.
  4. Cut out the image and unfold it. As a result, a symmetrical drawing will be created.
  5. Place this detail along the outline shown on the wallpaper. Adjust the dimensions if the bird extends beyond the outline.
  6. Combine the prepared owl with the outline shown and outline it. Remove the rectangular shape with an eraser.
  7. Inside the bird, draw several details in the form of a belly, wings, beak and eyes. Use a pencil for this.
  8. As a result, a life-size stencil will be created.

Before cutting, the fabric should be decatized - i.e. sprinkled with water and ironed.

Before cutting, it is necessary to artificially shrink the fabric material so that after the first wash the product does not shrink. For these purposes, the material must be moistened and then dried in a straightened state.

Finally, the fabric needs to be ironed, moving parallel to the edge. To outline the contour, it is recommended to use a wax pencil or chalk, which differ in shade from the material.

You can also take a thin dry piece of soap for these purposes. If the material is mesh, openwork or lace, the outline should be made in the form of stitches.

On the fabric material, you should initially place all the large fragments of the stencil, then you can place the medium and small parts. If the pattern shows only 1/2 of the drawing, the parts should be placed on the fabric fold.

Algorithm for creating a decorative item:

  1. Using the pattern templates, cut out all the details from fabric and felt materials.
  2. Sew the colored parts onto the wings. Place the thread knot between the fabric and felt material. To make sewing easier, the fabric material can be pinned.
  3. Use the pattern to place and sew the eye pieces. The distance from the eye to the edge of the main piece, as well as between the eyes, should be approximately 5 mm.
  4. Then start sewing the belly. First pin the piece with pins.
  5. Then attach the claws with the beak and dark parts of the ears. Embroider the tail on the back of the product.
  6. Place the 2 main pieces together. Place the wings between them, pinning them. Stitch around the circle, leaving a small area open.
  7. Fill the product with padding polyester through the hole left. Then sew the hole manually with a blind stitch.

With a pocket on the stomach

The owl pillow is more of a toy. However, the product can also be used as a decoration or for its intended purpose, by placing it under your head.

Additionally, a pocket can be made on the bird’s belly for storing various small items, such as a remote control, small toys or sweets, which makes the product multifunctional.

List of necessary materials and tools:

  • 2 buttons with a sewing machine, corresponding accessories and thread material in the same color;
  • stationery;
  • wallpaper or 2 pieces of Whatman paper to make a pattern, as well as a copy sheet;
  • fabric material;
  • felt fabric in yellow and white shades to create the beak and eyes;
  • holofiber for filling the bird's body and synthetic padding in the form of sheets for the wings.

Step-by-step description of the work:

  • Make a pattern of the bird on wallpaper or Whatman paper, drawing all the fragments. On the stomach, make an additional pocket in the form of a line that perpendicularly crosses this part of the body from edge to edge. Leave 0.5 cm more on each side.
  • Transfer the pattern fragment onto the fabric, leaving 1 cm allowances for the seams.
  • Cut out a beak with eyes from felt. Cut out a pocket piece, 4 pieces for the wings and 2 main pieces from fabric.
  • Make 2 parts for the wings from synthetic padding.
  • Make a pattern of all the fragments, leaving allowances for seams.
  • Place the wing pieces together so that the right sides are inside. Sew the pieces, but do not touch the side that will be joined to the main piece.
  • Turn the wings inside out, smooth them out and stuff them with filling.

  • Place the beak with eyes on the front side and sew it up.
  • After that, place the wings with the pocket. The edges of the latter should be joined with the edges of the main part. As a result, a fold should appear, which will add volume. To fix the position, use pins.
  • Place the wings on top so that the edges match the edges of the main part. The padding can be shortened as needed. This area is multi-layered. It is recommended to use basting instead of pins.
  • Place the second base piece on top so that the front side is inside. Pin the piece. Carefully sew on a sewing machine, leaving a small opening of 15 cm long on the side. The slit should be above the wings.
  • Turn the decorative item right side out, smooth it out and iron it. Then fill the product with holofiber.
  • Sew up the remaining opening with a blind stitch.
  • Sew the edges of the wings to the pocket. Hide these areas with buttons.
