National Unity Day has been celebrated since 2004 on November 4. It is celebrated in memory of the events of 1612, when the militia led by K. Minin and D. Pozharsky liberated Moscow from the Poles.

National Unity Day is associated with the end of the Time of Troubles, which began after the death of Ivan the Terrible and the accession of the first of the Romanovs. At that time, there was a deep crisis of the state due to the suppression of the Rurik dynasty. The holiday was first established in 1613 as a church-state holiday in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, under which the militia fought.
