The myths of Ancient Greece are interesting, and their characters are charismatic and diverse. Among the most unusual creatures is Medusa Gorgon. Her image, invented by the ancient Greeks several thousand years ago, can be different. When drawing, artists use only basic information about this creature and supplement it with their own imagination.

Drawing tools

Medusa the Gorgon is a fictional creature that was defeated by Perseus. It is half snake, half human. The human in it is a woman's face, and instead of hair, there are small snakes. Before you start drawing it, you need to prepare paper and writing instruments.

A ready-made sample may be needed. The artist also needs to prepare for the upcoming process: collect his thoughts and try to imagine what the drawing will turn out like. Beginning artists do not need many tools and materials at first.

You can buy a simple pencil, a sharpener and an eraser. This is enough to enjoy the process of creating a drawing. As needed, you can supplement the artist's inventory with new accessories.

Pencils

When choosing pencils, you must look at the marks in the form of letters and numbers, which in combination indicate the hardness or softness of the lead. If these are pencils of domestic production, 2 letters are used for designation - "M" and "T": the 1st indicates softness, the 2nd - hardness.

To designate pencils from foreign manufacturers, the English letters “B” and “H” are used, where “B” means softness and “H” means hardness.

Each of the two main types of pencils has its own advantages and disadvantages. Beginners are advised to choose tools that use both letters in their markings.

The HB (or TM) pencil is an intermediate option between the hard and soft varieties. To achieve different effects, you can sharpen the purchased pencils in different ways and press on them when drawing.

Paper

If you plan to create drawings at home, it is better to buy separate sheets of paper. However, you should not take the first one you come across. Before buying, you need to pay attention to the type of its surface.

It can be:

• smooth;
• average;
• rough;
• very rude.

For a beginner, medium-grain material is best: it is most convenient to draw on with a pencil. If a beginner artist plans to create drawings outdoors, he should pay attention to small notebooks.

They are well suited for sketching. As for the type of paper, preference in this case should be given to fine-grained or smooth material.

Eraser

For an artist who uses a simple pencil in his work, an eraser is of great importance.

There are the following variants:

Eraser type	Description
Ordinary	It has one side that is soft and the other side that is hard. This eraser is best used to remove wide lines.
Nag	This is a flexible eraser, the shape of which can be changed. The nag erases small elements of the drawing well.

There are also beautiful, colorful and pleasantly smelling erasers on sale, but it is not recommended to buy them. They contain substances that have a negative effect on paper. This can seriously spoil the drawing.

In other respects, everyone fantasizes in their own way, and it turns out that the same character looks different. The drawing methods also differ.

Collective image

Medusa the Gorgon, a drawing of which can be a collective image, is often depicted as a beautiful girl with a snake's tail.

Work on this image takes place in the following stages:

1. Draw the head of a powerful character. It will initially be represented in the drawing by a simple circle. This circle should be located at the top of the sheet, closer to its upper edge.
2. Draw the spine from the head. At first it will be represented by a line that is long, and at the bottom it smoothly turns into a tail. Here it begins to bend and should cross itself once.
3. Just below the head, draw a sketch of the upper part of Medusa's body. To the left of it, there are 2 short lines that will represent the left arm. Exactly the same lines need to be drawn on the right. They will represent the right arm.
4. Draw 2 intersecting arced lines on the head: 1 goes from bottom to top, the 2nd – from left to right. They do not indicate any body parts, but are necessary, because in the future they will help determine the location of facial details.
5. Outline a thin neck, as well as a torso that smoothly transitions first into the hips, and then into the tail of the snake.
6. Using simple geometric shapes, draw the upper limbs, in one of which Medusa holds a bow, and in the other - an arrow.
7. Outline some details of the Gorgon's figure.
8. Draw the main distinguishing feature of the character – “hairs” in the form of snakes. Each such snake can be represented by one wriggling line. The total number of such lines can be different. It is recommended to make at least 15.
9. Move on to the details of the face. There should be 2 eyes, represented by small ovals. They are located on the auxiliary line, which runs from left to right. Medusa's nose is located on the auxiliary line, which runs from top to bottom, just below the intersection of these 2 lines. A little lower is the mouth, which can be represented by a short stroke.
10. Work on the torso. Here you need to draw the clothes, including the belt on the waist, which will become the border between the human body and the snake's tail.
11. Work on the details of the drawing. It is necessary to carefully outline the parts of the face: eyes, eyebrows, nose. Make the lips plumper with a few smooth lines.
12. Draw the contours of the face: chin, cheeks, ear.
13. Delete the auxiliary lines, they are no longer needed.
14. Carefully draw each snake on the Gorgon's head. It is important here to try not to lose in the lines and details.
15. Once the head is drawn, move on to the body. You should carefully draw the neck, then draw the clothes, not forgetting about the bends under the fabric, as well as the folds.
16. Work with the arms. Continuing the lines of the body, carefully draw out the thin arms. Particular care should be taken when drawing the fists: there are many small but important details here. On the forearms, you need to depict armlets.
17. Delete all lines that were used as auxiliary ones.
18. Draw the weapon of Medusa Gorgon. In her hands, the heroine in this case holds a bow in one hand and an arrow in the other. The bow, which is in the left hand, is represented by a large curved line. The arrow is a straight line going from the Gorgon's right hand to the middle of the bow.
19. Outline the contours of Medusa Gorgon's hips and her long, wriggling tail.
20. Delete auxiliary line.
21. Proceed to drawing shadows. The best way to depict shadows is to apply hatching of varying density. It is important to remember that shadows are located in the least illuminated places.

Head of Medusa Gorgon

To let the viewer know that Medusa Gorgon is in front of him, it is not necessary to draw her entire body. Sometimes just the head is enough, the main distinguishing features of which are the many snakes.

Medusa Gorgon (the head drawing will be distinguished by a huge number of snakes with an expressive chilling look) is drawn in the following stages:

1. Start with the outline. It is necessary to draw a semi-oval, and inside it - a wavy axis of symmetry. On this axis mark the level of the chin.
   
2. Mark the back surface of the neck. This is done with the 1st line coming out from the bottom of the main semi-oval.
3. Draw 2 arced lines intersecting the axis of symmetry. These are the brow ridge and cheekbones.
   
4. Draw a line under the brow ridge that will indicate the position of the eyes. Medusa Gorgon's organs of vision should be located between the brow ridge and the line just drawn.
5. Before drawing the eyes, draw a few lines at the bottom of the face to indicate the shape of the chin.
6. Draw the eyes. Also draw a line for the bridge of the nose and draw the lips.
7. Draw a line under the chin to indicate the front of the neck.
   
8. Around Medusa's head, outline several small ovals. Each of them will represent the snake's head. The total number of such ovals is 8. Half of them are located directly above the head, 2 ovals are approximately at the level of the brow ridge, and the remaining 2 are near the mouth.
   
9. Emphasize the shape of the eyes, and also draw the eyebrow on the left and the folds located below.
10. Draw the tip of the nose and lips.
11. Trace the contours of the neck.
12. Begin to depict the small snakes that adorn the Gorgon's head. They should be represented by curly lines.
    
13. Finish drawing the eyes. You need to depict the pupils inside them.
14. Outline the shape of the eyebrows, highlight the cheekbones and refine the lips.
15. Continue working on the snake bodies. Their shape needs to be fleshed out, and each head needs to be supplemented with a pair of small eyes.
    
16. Finish the mouth and then move on to the final stage of detailing the bodies of the writhing snakes. You should refine their shape and depict mouths with tongues.
    
17. Shade the eyebrows and mouth, leaving a small, unshaded area on its surface. This will be a highlight.
18. Draw folds on the snakes' bodies. This is done with short lines. The snakes' tongues should be forked.
    
19. Remove unnecessary elements and make a few adjustments.

At this point, the work of drawing the head of Medusa Gorgon can be considered complete. The drawing can remain as it is in black and white. If you want to make the picture colorful, you need to move on to coloring the image in any colors.

• snakes can be green or black;
• their tongues are red;
• Medusa's body is usually pale, so it can be left white.

Medusa Gorgon, a drawing of which is suitable for beginner artists, can be depicted as follows:

1. Start drawing from the head. Place a circle at the top of the sheet. Inside it, draw 2 intersecting lines that will become auxiliary. They will help to depict the details of the face of the cute cartoon Medusa Gorgon at future stages.
2. At the bottom of the head, start a line that will indicate the snake-like writhing body of Medusa. Do not draw too long a line, because in this example the drawing of the Gorgon is simplified. This line can be slightly longer than the perimeter of the circle that indicates the head. You can draw this line so that it curves downwards, passes along the bottom of the sheet from left to right, and then rises slightly, turns slightly to the right and ends.
3. When the initial sketch of Medusa Gorgon is ready, start detailing some parts of the body. Draw several lines starting from the left and right of the head. 2 lines should be located on the left and the same number on the right. 5. Draw the 2nd row of snakes. There will be only 3 of them visible here. They are drawn using the same principle as the snakes in the front row, but they should be made smaller. Their heads can be directed in different directions. For example, 2 snakes can look to the right, and 1 to the left.
6. Place 1 dot on each snake head to indicate the eyes.
7. Draw Medusa's eyes. Their location will be indicated by the horizontal auxiliary line drawn earlier. The Gorgon's organs of vision are larger than those of her snakes. It is best to imagine each eye as an oval, stretched from top to bottom. Above the eyes, draw one line, which will indicate the eyebrows.
8. Draw the Gorgon's mouth. It is represented by a small circle located at the bottom of the vertical auxiliary line that was drawn here in step 1.
9. In Medusa's mouth, draw several sharp teeth and a long forked tongue.
10. Proceed to detailing the lower part. Here, at an early stage, a curved line was drawn. This will be the central part of Medusa's body and her tail. Under this line there should be another one, which repeats all its curves. After drawing this line, the previous line, which is auxiliary, can be deleted. The remaining line will be the outline of the body, turning into the tail.
11. Draw a curving line that starts from the head, goes down slightly to the right of the newly created body outline, and, without curving to the right, connects to this outline.
12. Draw a pair of Medusa's arms. This is done simply: just draw a few lines to the left and right of the upper part of the body. Each of them looks about the same as the snake on the head.
13. Draw another short, curving line, which will become the upper contour of the tail. It starts from the left hand and, curving, goes to the tip of the tail. This line will not be long.
14. Decorate the body of Medusa and add color to the drawing. Small scales will serve as decorations, which are especially prominent only in some areas of the body. Each such scale can be represented by an oval. The sizes can be different. Several very small scales should be on each of the 4 front snakes, flaunting on the head. Several small ovals should be depicted on the face, tail and hands.
15. On the front part of the body, instead of scales, depict several horizontal lines. They are not quite straight, but slightly rounded in accordance with the body of the Gorgon.

To color the picture, you can use pencils, markers or paints. You will need mostly green.

This shade should be:

• head of Medusa;
• her snakes;
• tail;
• hands.

Almost the entire body can be painted green, while the scales should also be green, but a different shade. They should be made darker. Medusa's eyes can be black, as well as the eyebrows above them. When painting, small round areas should be left white. These will be the pupils. The teeth are also white, and the tongue is red. The front part of the body can be made beige or yellow.

The background of the drawing, which depicts Medusa Gorgon, can be any, for example, blue. If desired, you can leave it unpainted.
