Garter stitch snood with knitting needles. Knitting pattern in one, two turns, in a circle

A snood is a warm, wide, ring-shaped scarf that is tied around the neck in several layers or used as a replacement for a hood or hat.

Not only an experienced craftsman, but also a beginner can knit it on their own with knitting needles using a garter stitch pattern, using fairly simple, accessible patterns from thick wool or acrylic yarn.

Pattern Features

Garter stitch is considered a basic pattern, perfect for beginners and quite easy to perform.

It consists of two main elements – front and back loops, and the resulting pattern resembles horizontal convex stripes in its shape.

It can be used as the main pattern or as a background, complementing the braids, English or French elastic bands or other relief ornaments that decorate the snood.

The garter stitch pattern also has a number of features and advantages over other knitting methods, including:

  • High wear resistance, allowing the finished product to retain its shape for a long time and not stretch even with frequent washing.
  • The ability to obtain fairly voluminous items with an edge that is not prone to curling, allowing the scarf to fit evenly and beautifully to the body.

Necessary materials

You can use almost any thread for garter stitch, since it favorably emphasizes the individuality of the yarn itself, and when using, for example, a melange thread for knitting, it allows you to create smooth color transitions on the finished product, making it completely different from the front and back sides.

For knitting a snood, thick yarn is best suited - for example, acrylic

For knitting a snood, it is best to use wool or acrylic yarn, a fairly dense yarn that provides the volume of the product, its wear resistance, and also allows it to better retain heat.

The color of the threads can be any. The master can choose yarn of pastel or bright shades, and for creating a gradient product, threads that smoothly transition from one color shade to another are suitable.

Also, when knitting a garter stitch pattern, you need to remember that it significantly shortens the product in height and, accordingly, increases the yarn consumption. You can knit a snood with garter stitch using straight, hosiery or circular knitting needles that match the size of the thread thickness.

You will also need the following for the job:

  • scissors;
  • a knitting needle that helps to connect the loops of the sides of the product;

For ease of knitting, you can use a special yarn holder, which also has stands for tools.
  • marker;
  • a notebook or notepad for taking notes.

Features of knitting

A garter stitch snood with knitting needles (work patterns are given below in the article) can be knitted from any yarn suitable for cold weather (wool or acrylic).

It can be worn in one, two or three turns, and it itself has no beginning or end and can be sewn or immediately knitted into a ring (in a circle).

The technique of knitting a snood varies depending on the tools used:

On straight needles The work is carried out using facial loops, and it is necessary to:

1. Cast on the required number of stitches on both knitting needles and pull out one of them.

2. Complete the initial row, for which you should drop the first loop and continue working in the classic way, knitting the front loops with the thread caught through the front wall.

3. Make the last loop in the row purl

4. Turn the product and complete the second row also with knit stitches with the last purl stitch.

5. Proceed in the same manner for the remaining rows until the scarf reaches the desired length.

If desired, the front loops in a row can be replaced with back loops, with front loops at the end.

On circular needles When working with circular knitting needles, the cast-on number of stitches is closed into a circle. The place of joining is marked with a marker, after which:

1. The 1st row of the product is knitted entirely with front loops (up to the divider).

2. There is no need to turn the fabric, you can continue knitting it in the same direction, but when knitting the 2nd row, use only purl loops.

3. The 3rd, 5th, 7th and all subsequent odd rows here will consist only of front loops.

4. The 4th, 6th, 8th and even circles are worked entirely with purl stitches.

The choice of the appropriate knitting technique for the product depends on the size and type of scarf:

  • For a snood-pipe, circular knitting needles are used in most cases, which do not require sewing. It can be worn around the neck or as a hood on the head. In this case, its width will be from 35 to 50 cm, with a length of 60 cm.
  • The long snood is knitted on both circular and straight needles, and its length will be about 150 cm with a width of 50 cm.

On straight needles

A garter stitch snood with knitting needles (work patterns include constantly alternating rows with front and back loops) with straight knitting needles in one turn can be knitted for a child, a man or a woman, while the number of loops cast on will directly depend on its desired size.

Garter stitch snood with knitting needles. Knitting pattern in one, two turns, in a circle Garter stitch snood with knitting needles. Knitting pattern in one, two turns, in a circle

To determine the number of loops before starting work on the product, you need to knit a control sample of 20 loops 20-30 cm long, and then count the number of loops that fall within 10 cm of the sample.

Using this value, as well as the approximate width of the scarf given in the table, the formula - ШШ (scarf width) *КП (number of loops in 10 cm of the sample) / 10 + 2 edge loops determines the number of loops required for the initial set, for example, (60 * 20/10) + 2 = 122.

That is, for a scarf 60 cm wide, you will need to cast on 122 loops (provided that 20 loops are included in 10 cm of the knitted sample).

You will also need the following for knitting:

  • yarn (for example, Superlana Classic Azize, with 75% acrylic and 25% wool, density 280 m/100 g);
  • straight knitting needles No. 10;
  • sewing needle.

Knitting pattern:

To knit a snood you will need:

  1. Cast on 65-122 stitches (depending on the width of the product) and knit the first row entirely with face stitches. The last stitch in the row should be purl stitched, then turn the fabric and knit the 2nd row also with face stitches. It should be finished with a purl stitch.
  2. Proceeding in a similar manner (knitting rows with front loops in the classic way and turning the fabric), you need to knit 28-50 cm of fabric, and close all the loops one by one.
  3. Using a needle and thread, sew the scarf (along the short side). The needle should be inserted only into empty loops.
  4. After finishing the work, use scissors to cut off the remaining thread and hide it with a needle on the inside of the product.

In a circle

Garter stitch snood with knitting needles (work patterns will help to avoid mistakes) on circular knitting needles one turn will have an approximate circumference of 60 cm and a height of 35 cm.

To work you will need:

  • 2 skeins of yarn (for example, Nako Arctic, 100 g/100 m);
  • circular knitting needles No. 6;
  • knitting marker;
  • tape measure or ruler;
  • crochet hook #5.

When working on a product you need to:

  1. Cast on 61-101 stitches (60-100 stitches will be the main stitches, and 1 stitch will be needed to connect the knitting in a circle) and knit the 1st row of the fabric with purl stitches.
  2. Mark the end of the circle with a marker and knit the next row only with knit stitches.
  3. Mark the end of the row with a marker and knit the 3rd row with purl stitches (the same as the first), and the 4th row with only knit stitches (like the 2nd round).
  4. Proceeding in the same way and alternating even rows with purl stitches and odd rows with face stitches, knit 26-30 cm of fabric (approximately 70-77 rows), and then close all the stitches one by one using a crochet hook.
  5. Cut the thread with scissors and hide the remaining ends in the loops of the fabric using a needle.
  6. The finished snood needs to be sprinkled with water and steamed.

In 2 turns

A snood in garter stitch with knitting needles (it is not recommended for beginners to change the patterns) in 2 turns on circular knitting needles will have an approximate length of 120-140 cm and 30 cm in height.

During wear, it will stretch a little in length (up to 130-150 cm), while its height will decrease by 2-3 cm, but after washing it will again restore its original shape.

For work you can use:

  • 3 skeins of semi-woolen yarn (for example, “Cascade” with 40% merino wool and 60% acrylic, density 100 g/125 cm);
  • circular knitting needles No. 5;
  • scissors;
  • knitting needle and marker.

Snood pattern diagram:

When working you need to:

  • Cast on 102-180 stitches (their number will depend on the size of the desired product), add 1 stitch to them and close the knitting in a circle. Proceed to knitting a snood with garter stitch, for which you should:
  • Knit the 1st row completely with purl stitches, mark its end with a marker.
  • Work the 2nd row of fabric with only knit stitches and place a marker.
  • Knit rows 3, 5, 7 exactly the same as the 1st round.
  • Perform rows 4 and 6 according to the pattern of the 2nd round.
  • Depending on your desire, you can use garter stitch all the way to the end of the fabric, or add a simple spiral pattern to it, with a purl stitch shifting in each row.

In this case:

  • In the 8th row, you need to perform a repeating pattern of 5 front loops + 1 back loop throughout the entire circle.
  • Row 9 begins with a purl stitch, followed by 5 knit stitches. The pattern is repeated throughout the entire circle.
  • 10th row – rapport – 1 front + 1 back + 4 front loops.
  • Row 11 – repeating pattern – 2 knit stitches + 1 purl stitch + 3 knit stitches.
  • 12th row – perform the pattern 7-8 times: 3 front loops + 1 back loop + 2 front loops.
  • Row 13 – knit 7-8 times in a circle a pattern of – 4 front loops + 1 back loop and 1 front loop.
  • Round 14 – the repeating pattern changes to 5 knit stitches and 1 purl stitch.

  • From the 15th row, the pattern can be repeated or switched to garter stitch knitting. In this case, it will need to be knitted entirely with purl stitches.
  • Row 16 should be done with only knit stitches, and then continue knitting until the product reaches the desired length (120-140 cm), alternating odd rows done with purl stitches and even rows done with knit stitches.
  • After the snood reaches the desired length, close all the loops one by one, knitting the first 2 loops in a row as purl stitches, then grab the right loop with the left knitting needle (from left to right), throw it over the second loop, closing the first loop.
  • Knit the next loop purlwise and, throwing the first one over the second, close the second loop.
  • Proceed in a similar manner, closing all the loops of the snood one by one.

  • Secure the product by pulling the thread through the outer 1-2 loops with a hook, then cut it off and hide the tail inside the loops.
  • The finished product needs to be sprinkled with water and steamed.

In one turn or 2 turns for a child

Garter stitch is ideal for knitting children's products. A snood made in this way with knitting needles fits well to the body, while reliably protecting from cold wind and frost.

The pattern involves knitting in a circle with 3 threads, alternating rows of front and back stitches, complemented by a beautiful pattern.

To work you will need:

  • 2 skeins of yarn (for example, Happy Kids Alize 579 icy, containing 25% wool, 65% acrylic and 10% bamboo, density 100 g/310 m);
  • circular knitting needles No. 8;
  • scissors;
  • knitting marker and needle.

To knit a children's scarf you will need:

  • Cast on 50-70 stitches + 1 for closing in a circle and start knitting with garter stitch, for which complete the 1st row entirely with front stitches. Mark its end with a marker.

  • Knit the 2nd row with purl stitches. At the end, without knitting, transfer the last stitch from the left knitting needle to the right one, remove the marker, pick up the yarn over behind this stitch and put it on the left knitting needle. Knit the yarn over together with the purl stitch behind the front wall and put on the marker.
  • Complete the 3rd row with knit stitches, and in the 4th row repeat the pattern of the 2nd circle.
  • Alternating odd rows with front loops and even rows with back loops, knit the snood to the required length of 50-60 cm (when knitting in one turn) or 100-120 cm (when knitting in 2 turns).

Then close the loops, secure the product by pulling the thread through 1-2 outer loops with a crochet hook, then cut it off and hide the tails inside with a needle.

  • The finished product needs to be steamed and, if desired, decorated with a flower or brooch.

With a pattern

If desired, a snood made with garter stitch can be slightly diversified with a beautiful double-sided “chessboard” pattern.

In this case, after casting on 50-70 loops + one additional loop, the knitting is closed in a circle and is performed:

  • 1st row: repeat 5-7 times with a pattern of 6 front and 6 back loops.
  • The 2nd row is knitted entirely with front loops.
  • In the 3rd row, the rapport of the 1st row is performed.
  • The 4th row is knitted entirely with purl stitches.
  • In the 5th row, only knit stitches are worked, and in the 6th row, only purl stitches.
  • In the 7th row, 5-7 roses are knitted in a pattern of 6 purl and 6 front loops.
  • Row 8: knit completely with purl stitches.
  • In the 9th row, the pattern of the 7th circle is repeated.

  • In the 10th row, only purl stitches are worked, and in the 11th row, only knit stitches.
  • Then knitting is repeated from the 1st to the 11th row until the fabric reaches a length of 50-60 or 100-120 cm.
  • Complete the closing of all loops.
  • Using a hook, pull the thread through the last 1-2 loops of the outer row, securing it, then cut the thread and hide the remaining tails with a needle on the inside.
  • Wet and steam the finished product.

Gradient

A gradient-knitted snood involves working simultaneously with special yarn or knitting in several threads, with the gradual addition of 2-3 shades of yarn that are similar in color.

Garter stitch snood with knitting needles. Knitting pattern in one, two turns, in a circle

In the first case, you will need the following to work:

  • gradient yarn (for example, YarnArt Flowers 250 m/100 g or Azize Real 40 or Sekerim 320 m/100 g);
  • circular needles 2.5-5;
  • scissors;
  • knitting marker and needle.

When using gradient yarn, knitting is done in 1, 2 or 3 threads using the usual garter stitch method, and you need to:

  • Cast on 100-180 stitches (depending on the size of the snood) + 1 extra stitch, and join the knitting in a circle.
  • Work the 1st row entirely with knit stitches, place a marker at the end of the row, turn the fabric and work the 2nd row with purl stitches only.

Garter stitch snood with knitting needles. Knitting pattern in one, two turns, in a circle

  • Continue knitting in a circle, alternating front and back stitches in odd and back rows – in even rows, knit a piece of fabric 80-140 cm long and close the stitches one by one.

Secure the finished product with a crochet hook by pulling the thread through 1-2 knitted loops of the last row, cut the thread, and hide the ends inside the loops using a needle.

  • Sprinkle the resulting product with water and steam it.

The second option for knitting a gradient snood involves gradually adding threads of another similar or contrasting shade to the pattern.

In this case, the following are suitable for work:

  • 2 skeins of yarn in different shades (for example, Alize Superlana Tig gray, pink, density 150 m/100 g);
  • circular knitting needles No. 3.5;
  • knitting marker and needle;
  • scissors.

Knitting is done with 3 threads, and during work you need to:

  • Cast on 100-180 stitches of grey yarn (depending on size) + 1 extra stitch and close the knitting in a circle.
  • Turn the knitting over and using the garter stitch pattern, complete the 1st row in a circle using completely purl stitches.

Garter stitch snood with knitting needles. Knitting pattern in one, two turns, in a circle

  • Place a marker after finishing the row and complete the 2nd row with knit stitches.
  • Proceeding in the same way and alternating odd circles (3, 5, 7, 9) with purl and even rows (4, 6, 8, 10) with face loops, knit 9.5-10 cm of fabric.
  • Start introducing a new color into knitting (for example, pink), for which you need to cut one gray thread with scissors and tie a pink thread to its end.

Knit, without changing the pattern, 2 cm of fabric with 2 gray and 1 pink thread (7-8 rows) and cut off the second gray thread, tying the second pink thread to it.

  • Knit 8 rows (2 cm of fabric) with 2 pink and 1 grey threads using a garter stitch pattern and cut off the last grey thread, replacing it with a pink one.
  • Using 3 pink yarns, alternate rows of knit and purl stitches, knit 10 cm of fabric and close the stitches after the purl row by knitting 2 stitches together and pulling the next stitch over them.

Garter stitch snood with knitting needles. Knitting pattern in one, two turns, in a circle

  • Use a crochet hook to secure the piece by pulling the working threads through the 2 knitted loops of the last row, then cut them off with scissors and hide the remaining ends with a needle inside the knitted loops.
  • Lightly wet the resulting product and steam it.

If desired, you can knit a gradient snood of 3 or more colors, gradually adding one thread of each new shade to the working knitting.

Tips for Beginners

When knitting with the garter stitch pattern, professionals also advise beginners:

  • When calculating the number of stitches required to cast on, remember to constantly maintain the density of the pattern, carefully ensuring that all stitches are the same size. This can be done by choosing knitting needles that match the thickness of the yarn.

Garter stitch snood with knitting needles. Knitting pattern in one, two turns, in a circle

  • At first, use straight needles made of wood or bamboo to knit snoods, which will allow you to understand the principle of thread tension and alternation of pattern rows. Later, you can switch to circular needles.
  • It is essential to study the pattern diagram carefully before starting work. Garter stitch in combined patterns when knitting with straight needles is usually depicted using a vertical line.

When working on circular knitting needles, it will be indicated by vertical and horizontal lines corresponding to the alternation of rows with front and back loops.

  • While working, watch the thread tension and do not tighten the loops too much. You also cannot loosen them, as this can lead to asymmetry of the resulting pattern.
Garter stitch snood with knitting needles. Knitting pattern in one, two turns, in a circle
When knitting, you need to control the tension of the thread

You can feel the tension density by knitting a control sample 20-30 cm long before starting to work on the snood.

  • Use a needle to join the parts of the snood made with garter stitch, placing it into the open loops.
  • When finishing work, close the loops not simultaneously, but one by one, which will allow you not to tighten the edge, but to make it elastic.

A snood is a stylish and warm accessory for children and adults, used as a voluminous scarf or hood and providing good protection from cold wind and frost. Even a novice craftsman can easily knit it on his own, using a simple and accessible garter stitch pattern.

Involving the use of alternating rows with front and back loops, it does not require complex calculations, while allowing you to create a very beautiful and stylish accessory with beautiful horizontal bulges that does not lose its original appearance even after numerous washes.
