A hard pencil is used to create a sketch and fill in the light areas of the picture. It leaves thin and pale lines that can be easily erased with an eraser. A soft pencil leaves behind a thick, dark line. It is used to draw small details, apply rich shadows and final outline of the drawing. A hard-soft pencil is something in between.

The lines are not as pale as those from hard graphite, but not as saturated as those from a soft pencil. Such a tool is needed for shading and applying light shadows. You will also need a high-quality eraser for the work. The eraser should not crumble much, damage the paper and smear the graphite on it.

All tools must be sharpened. Dull pencils cannot draw graceful, neat lines. Therefore, a sharpener should always be at hand.

Cute monster

Cool drawings (for copying such creatures you can use illustrations from fantasy books) with cute monsters can decorate the pages of a personal diary or drawing notebook.

How to draw such a monster:

1. Using a pencil with a hard lead, draw an egg-shaped body in the center of the sheet.
2. Make the bottom corners rougher.
3. Use an eraser to remove any extra strokes.
4. Draw 2 elongated ears for the monster. Highlight their inner parts.
5. Draw small horns. They should be round and thick.
6. Draw the arms and legs. Add the hooves. Draw tufts of fur at their base in the form of zigzag lines.
7. Using a pencil with a hard-soft tip, highlight the shadows at the base of the arms, legs and hooves. Blend these lines.
8. Color the ears. They should be a little lighter inside, so when coloring the outer parts of the ears, you need to press a little harder on the pencil.

To draw this picture you will need only 2 pencils: hard and soft.

Step by step instructions:

1. Using a pencil with a hard lead, draw a round head of the spider. Finish drawing an oval body.
2. Use lines to mark the position of the paws.
3. Finish drawing the chelicerae (the branches covering the mouth).
4. Draw the knee joints on the paws as ovals.
5. Finish drawing the eye and the spot on the head.
6. Use a soft pencil to outline the picture.
7. Draw hairs on the knee joints, body and head.

9. Color the eye.

This idea may seem good for beginner artists, however, it should be remembered that the picture should have other detailed elements, such as hair, clothes, background. For copying, you can use the works of more experienced artists.

How to draw a picture like this:

1. Using a hard pencil, draw an oval head.
2. Add neck and shoulders.
3. Schematically depict the shape of the hairstyle.
4. Draw large strands.
5. Using a hard-soft pencil, draw branches with carved leaves in the girl’s hairstyle.
6. Draw a butterfly. Draw a pattern on its wings.
