Women's hat is a warm winter accessory, allowing you to protect yourself from frost and cold wind, and, if necessary, to correct the anatomical features of a round face.

Knitted with knitting needles from thick wool yarn with large patterns, decorated with voluminous decorative elements, it is quite simple to make, but requires increased attention to detail.

What hats should you knit for a round face?

A women's hat is an accessory that fits harmoniously into the image, suits the shape and structure of the face, and, if necessary, can correct its features - visually lengthen the proportions and give small features additional volume.

You can do this using the following made by yourself:

• beanie hats;
• a large knit headdress that does not completely fit the head;
• a beret-cap worn with the visor to one side;
• tube hats made of thick yarn that can be combined with almost any clothing;
• turban hats;
• headdress with turn-ups, geometric cut.

It is also recommended:

• choose only thick wool yarn for knitting;
• use vertical patterns and pompoms to visually lengthen the face;
• add large decorative elements – bows, brooches – to a beanie, beret or turban.

It is not recommended to knit small, tight-fitting hats made of thin yarn that fall slightly onto the forehead, as well as wide headwear for women with a round face shape.

Necessary tools and materials

A women's hat for a round face can be knitted not only from wool yarn, but from a mixture of it with acrylic, mohair, angora.

Tools required for work:

Wool yarn	For work, it is recommended to purchase only thick or medium-thick threads made of natural wool, with an acceptable amount of synthetic fiber of 20%. The thread used for knitting should be thick, with an even, uniform structure and stability, allowing it not to stretch during washing and long-term use. Suitable: Yarn with 100% merino wool content (Lana Gatto Maxi Soft, Fibranatura Inca, Sandnes Garn Merinoull). Threads with 100% cashmere content (Cariaggi, Loro Piana) or with 15-20% added cotton, silk, polyamide (Lana Gatto Feeling, Gazzal Baby wool XL, Lana Grossa 365 Cashmere). Yarn made from angora goat wool and silk or nylon (Drops Kid-Silk long print, Lana Grossa Silkhair print, Lana Gatto Mohair Royal); Threads made from alpaca wool mixed with wool and polyamide (Drops Air Mix, Laines du Nord Alpaca Air).
Spokes	When knitting, circular and shuttle needles of 8-10 mm in size and 25-36 mm in length are used. For knitting large patterns, needles of 15 mm in size are required. The length of the line should be 40-50 cm. Depending on their experience, the master can take detachable (needles that are detachable from the line and changed if necessary) and non-detachable. For beginners, it is recommended to take non-detachable needles of the required diameter. Particular attention should be paid to the thickness of the needles. For successful knitting, they should be almost the same as the doubled thread.

Taking measurements

Before starting work, it is also necessary to take measurements from the woman’s head, for which, using a measuring tape, you need to measure:

• head circumference at its widest point, equal in most cases to 54-56 cm.
• the distance from the base of the skull (on the bridge of the nose) to the crown of the head and add 3 cm to it (for a beanie hat - 5-7 cm) - the AM value;
• the distance from the crown to the hairline in front – the MV value;
• the distance from the crown to the earlobe (MU value) and from the base of the skull (bridge of the nose) to the earlobe (AU value).

Based on these values, you can construct a basic pattern, for which:

• You need to draw a right angle with the vertex at point O, and from it horizontally set aside a segment OG, corresponding to the value of the head circumference.
• Down from point O, measure segment OA, corresponding to measurement AM and representing the size of the back seam.
• Divide the segment OG in half and mark the point B0, corresponding to the middle of the front, and from it downwards vertically draw the segment B0B, corresponding to the value of the measurement MB.
• To the right of point O, set aside a segment corresponding to the value of the measurement AU to obtain point Y0, and draw a line vertically downwards from it corresponding to the measurement MU, designating it Y0Y.
• Connect all the dots in the drawing with smooth lines.

In addition, it is necessary to determine the dimensions of the crown and the bottom of the hat:

• The circumference of the bottom is equal to the volume of the head, and its radius R is DO (the circumference) / 2PR, where π corresponds to the geometric value of pi equal to 3.14.
• The height of the crown will be equal to the value of MU – R of the bottom.

Determining the knitting density

After the measurements have been taken, you will need to determine the knitting density, for which you need to cast on 10 loops and knit 10 rows. The resulting sample needs to be measured with a ruler and the number of loops in one centimeter should be calculated. After this, you need to multiply the head circumference by the number of loops, for example, 56 * 2 = 112.

For ease of use, it is recommended to round off any resulting number, making it a multiple of 8.

If you want to create a pattern on a hat, it is recommended to first knit a sample of it, 10*10 cm in size, carefully spread it out on any smooth surface and use a ruler to calculate the number of loops it contains horizontally and vertically.

Hat with turn-ups

A knitted hat for a round face with 2 folds is very popular, and to create it you will need to take:

• 3 skeins of alpaca wool yarn (eg Novita Alpaka Wool);
• stocking and circular knitting needles No. 4.

The knitting density for a head circumference of 54 cm will be 17 loops per 10 cm.

During work you need to:

1. Cast on 98 stitches and knit the first round with a 1*1 rib pattern (one front + one back stitch).
2. On the second circle, knit 1 front + 1 back + 1 front, remove it with a yarn over as a back, then repeat the original pattern.
3. This rapport must be repeated when knitting the 3rd and 4th rows.
4. When working on the 5th circle, you need to additionally cast on 96 loops and knit them with a 1*1 elastic band (with alternating front and back loops), and then continue knitting with a semi-patent elastic band, for which:

• on the 1st circle, knit 1 front + 1 back + 1 front loop, the last one should be removed without knitting as a back loop, and repeat the original pattern with alternating front and back loops.
• On the 2nd circle, the pattern consists of 1 knit + 1 purl + 1 knit stitch, after which you need to make a yarn over, remove the last knit stitch and knit it as a purl stitch. This pattern continues throughout the entire circle.
• Perform the next 2 rows in the same way (until the fabric reaches a height of 24 cm) and switch to double-pointed needles.
• When working the next row, decrease one stitch in the first round so that there are only 95 stitches left and knit 19 cm in stockinette stitch.

5. Start decreasing to form the crown by knitting:

• on the 1st circle - 2 knit stitches + 3 knit stitches joined together. The pattern must be repeated in a circle so that 76 stitches remain in it;
• Knit 2 rounds without decreasing, then knit 2 knit stitches + 2 knit stitches together twice. The pattern must be repeated when knitting a circle, in which only 56 stitches should remain in the end.
• The next 2 circles are completed without decreasing, and on the third, knit 2 knit stitches together + 1 knit stitch twice and repeat the pattern in a circle to reduce the row to 37 stitches.
• Throughout the 4th circle, you need to knit together two front loops (there should be 19 loops left in total), and on the 5th, do 1 front loop + 2 purl loops knitted together. In total, there should be no more than 10 loops left on the needle in the last circle.

6. At the resulting top of the hat, you need to cut off the excess thread, hide it inside with a needle and make lapels.

Helsinki hat

A women's hat for a round face with Helsinki knitting needles with a turn-up is made from very thick, bulky yarn by alternating front and back loops. It can be done in two ways - with a 1*1 or 2*2 elastic band.

You will also need:

• special yarn made of 100% Australian merino wool, 2.5-3 cm thick, 3 skeins;
• thick knitting needles No. 5.5-6.

During work you need to:

• Make a strong loop from the end of the thread, cast on 15 loops onto the knitting needles without tightening them too much, and then transfer the last one from one knitting needle to another (for example, from the left to the right), connect into a circle.
• Place the second loop on the right needle over the loop that was thrown over, then remove it so that you have 14 loops, which are needed to create a 1*1 elastic band.
• Knit 14 rows of the product, alternating one front and back loops, and on the 15th row make the first decrease - remove the front loops one by one, throw them onto the main thread and knit behind the back wall. The back loops should be left unchanged.
• The 16th row is performed without changes, and on the 17th row, the remaining 7 purl loops are transferred to the main thread and tightened, while the front loops do not need to be touched.
• To mask the ends of the thread, it must be separated and torn in steps. Now, working with thin threads, you need to pull them one by one with a needle inside the set edge.
• The finished hat needs to be tried on and the lapels need to be made.

Turban hat

A knitted hat for a round face in the shape of a Turkish turban consists of two panels that converge at the top, which allows you to visually stretch the oval of the face, highlighting the forehead area.

To create it you will need to take:

• 100 g wool yarn (merino, angora);
• circular knitting needles No. 5.

The knitting density will be 1.5 loops - 1 cm. The product is made with a "relief elastic" pattern, which requires dividing the number of loops cast on by 3. Its rapport is 6 loops + 2 edge loops.

Work on the product begins from the back of the head, for which you need:

• Cast on 18 stitches and knit 4 cm of fabric with a textured elastic band, doing the following:
• 1st and 2nd rows: combination 1 purl + 2 knit stitches;
• 3rd row: perform a rapport - 1 purl + 2 front loops, of which the second one must be first transferred to the back wall without removing it from the knitting needle, and the first front loop - to the front wall. At the end of the row, there is an edge loop.
• The 4th row is knitted with a pattern of 1 purl + 2 front loops.
• As soon as the fabric reaches a size of 4-5 cm, start making an increase of 5-9 loops in each front row. The loops are added using a yarn over to themselves, and in the next row they are knitted with the front side on the back wall. In order for the stitches to be uniform, in the 1st row you need to make yarn overs after the front loops (+5-9 increases), and in the next row - before the front loops (also +5-9 increases). In the back rows, the yarn overs should be made with the front side, which will avoid the appearance of unwanted holes in the finished product.
• Continue increasing until the total number of loops reaches 11-12 (the 6-7 edge loops on the outer sections of the product should not be taken into account). The total number of loops on the knitting needle should be 68-70, and the height of the finished fabric should reach 16 cm.
• Knit the next 5-6 cm of the hat with an even pattern, and then begin to gradually decrease. To do this, knit 2 front loops with purl loops at least 5 times in each subsequent row.
• You need to decrease the loops until the row is reduced to 18 loops. They will need to be divided in half (9 each) and knit separately 2 halves of the headband, 28-29 cm long each. This should be done with a 1*1 elastic band, alternating the front and back loops.
• Place them crosswise at the top of the hat. Using a needle, sew their ends together, forming a turban and attach a headband, without pulling the front of the product too tightly.
• You can steal a turban hat with a brooch with a large stone.

Beret hat

A women's hat for a round face in the shape of a French beret is made with knitting needles from medium-thick wool yarn using circular or shuttle knitting needles No. 4-5.

During work it is required:

• Cast on 80 stitches onto circular needles and distribute them evenly.
• Make a rib by knitting about 5-7 cm of fabric with a pattern, alternating one front and one back loop. The last loop on the rib should be a back loop.
• To work on the main part of the product, move on to knitting with front loops 10-12 cm (the exact length of the section will depend on the length of the headdress being made).
• To form the crown, start decreasing by knitting two knit stitches at equal distances from each other throughout the row.
• Proceeding in a similar manner, constantly decreasing loops, you need to do every second subsequent row, gradually reducing the circle to 10-15 loops. After this, you need to start connecting 2 all the front loops. You need to stop as soon as the row is reduced to 5 loops.
• Knit the remaining loops through the thread, pull it, tightening the hole in the crown and fasten.
• Trim the ends of the threads and pull the remaining tail through the inside of the product with a needle.
• Try on the resulting beret and decorate it on the side with a bow or brooch.

Beanie with pompom

A women's beanie hat for a round face can be made with a braid pattern and decorated with a pompom, for which you will need to take:

• 3 skeins of medium thickness or thick wool yarn (100% or with the addition of synthetic fibers);
• circular spins No. 3-5;
• fur pompom.

When working on the product you will need:

• Cast on 80-90 stitches (depending on head size) onto circular knitting needles and join them into a ring.
• Using a 1*1 elastic band (one front + one back loop) or 2*2 (2 front + 2 back loops), knit a section 4-8 cm high. If you want to make a lapel on the hat, you can increase its length to 16 cm.
• Knit 1 row with knit stitches, making an additional increase every 2-3 stitches (yarn over before or after them), increasing the width of the hat and preparing it for creating a voluminous pattern.
• The rapport is knitted according to the pattern up to a fabric height of 16-18 cm, and consists of several rows:

1. From the 1st to the 3rd row, knit a set of 3 purl + 12 knit + 3 purl loops.
2. On the 4th row, complete the rapport by knitting 3 purl + 8 knit stitches, crossing them to the right. To do this, remove 4 stitches onto an additional knitting needle and leave. Knit the next 4 stitches as knit stitches, then remove the stitches from the additional knitting needle and knit as knit stitches. The row ends with 3 purl stitches.
3. Knit rows 5-7 in the same way as rows 1-3 (3 purl + 12 knit + 3 purl loops).
4. On the 8th row, make a pattern consisting of 3 purl + 4 knit stitches + 8 knit stitches crossed to the left. To do this, remove 4 stitches onto an additional knitting needle and leave. Knit the next 4 stitches as knit stitches, and then knit 4 more stitches as knit stitches, taking them from the additional knitting needle. Finish the row with 3 purl stitches.

• After the product reaches a height of 16-18 cm, start making decreases in every 2nd row, knitting 2 purl stitches until there are 8-10 stitches left on the knitting needles.
• Secure the top of the hat by cutting the thread, pulling its tail through all the loops with a needle and pulling it tight.
• Attach a fur pompom to the top of the resulting product.

Pipe hat

A tube hat knitted from thick yarn will suit any outfit and will visually lengthen the face.

It is made with a 2-ply thread using:

• 100 g of yarn containing 70% mohair and 30% acrylic;
• 200 g melange thread;
• circular knitting needles No. 4.5.

Knitting density: 17 loops * 24 rows = 10 * 10 cm.

When performing work, you need to:

• Cast on 120 stitches and knit with a 2*2 rib pattern (2 front + 2 back stitches) for a length of 7 cm.
• Subsequent knitting of the product to the desired length is done with the front surface (front rows - front loops, back rows - back loops).
• Once the hat is ready to sew, cut the threads and pull the ends through the loops with a needle in the opposite direction.

• Use only good, smooth and even high-quality yarn made of natural wool, which does not lose its original qualities and does not stretch after washing. In addition, when buying threads, you must pay attention to their thickness and compliance with the selected product. So, when creating a hat for a round face, it is recommended to use only thick or medium-thick yarn.
• At first, do not use smooth threads or skeins of lurex, which can draw attention to defects in the work.

• As you work, keep the yarn under even tension, tightening and loosening it between your fingers, controlling the size of each stitch to avoid stitches of different sizes.
• Check your work regularly and correct any suspicious (uneven) stitches.
• Be sure to finish the row before putting the knitting down to avoid stitches of different sizes.
• Move stitches when knitting towards the tip of the needle, making room for new stitches.
