Cheburashka is a character from a cartoon and children's book written by Eduard Uspensky ("Gena the Crocodile and His Friends"). The character's image was drawn and thought out by Leonid Shvartsman. Until 1968, the unusual animal was drawn in different ways: in the first book, Cheburashka was depicted by the artist Alfeevsky.
What you need to draw Cheburashka
It's easy to draw Cheburashka using step-by-step instructions for children.
To do this you will need:
- simple pencils with different leads. A soft pencil draws light lines that are easy to remove with an eraser. A hard pencil creates a clear line and is also easy to shade a drawing with;
- eraser;
- sharpener;
- compass, ruler;
- paints. For drawings you can use gouache, watercolor or oil. Preferably use brown and black shades, but it is better to have a standard set of colors.
To work with paint, you will need brushes and containers for water. You can also use a palette and additional materials that will help your child draw a character.
Step-by-step instructions for drawing Cheburashka with a simple pencil
Cheburashka (a drawing for children in pencil does not contain many small details) is a character from a puppet cartoon by Roman Kachanov. The process of doing the work can be divided into 3 stages.
Body and head
First, you need to draw the outline of the body and head.
Stages of work execution:
- On a clean sheet of paper, 2/3 of the sheet, draw an oval. To begin, you can draw a circle with a compass, and then extend it horizontally into an oval shape.
- Using a ruler, divide the drawn shape into 4 equal parts using thin lines.
- From the bottom, draw a rectangular figure with rounded corners. For convenience, you can draw a rectangle, which you can then smooth out with a soft pencil.
- From each lower corner of the rectangle, draw uneven ovals that form the character's legs.

To draw the outline, it is better to use a soft pencil so that you can remove any untidy lines.
Detailing
Once the base is ready, you can begin to detail the image.
The process of performing the work:
- Draw a smaller figure inside the oval. On each side, use a compass to draw an unfinished circle to form the animal's large ears.
- Each ear should be about 1/2 the size of the head.
- Stepping back a small distance from the head, draw 2 small oblong ovals (on each side), pointing downwards.

- On the horizontal line, draw 2 small circles using a compass. Inside each, add another circle, the upper lines of which coincide with the boundaries of the eye contour.
- On the vertical line, at the bottom of the head, add a small isosceles triangle - the animal's nose, and a little lower - an arched line.
- At the top, above Cheburashka's eyes, draw short wide eyebrows.
It is better to paint over completed details with a pencil with a hard lead in order to preserve the contour lines during the shading process.
Hatching
Stages of shading a drawing:
- Use an eraser to remove all unnecessary elements of the drawing to get a clean and neat image.
- Apply light pressure with the pencil to paint the inner oval of the head.

- Use a pencil to draw Cheburashka's eyebrows, pupils and nose to get an active black color. Use a halftone to paint the character's mouth.
- Use a simple hard pencil to shade the remaining parts of the animal's body and head. Use active black color to draw the outline of all elements, and also draw 3-4 claws on each paw.
To make the image clear and bright, you can use gel pens. When doing the work, you can also use various hatching techniques that allow you to convey the structure of the drawing.
Pattern variations
Cheburashka (a drawing for children aged 4-6 should be simple) is a memorable animal with an unusual body structure. It is impossible to say exactly what it resembles: large ears, similar in structure to an elephant, the body of a bear.
With colored pencils
You can color the drawing with colored pencils.
Stages of work execution:
Stage | Description of the stage | Image |
1 | On a clean sheet of paper, draw a figure resembling a rectangle. The corners should be smoothed out, forming an oval. Draw a smaller oval inside the figure. The distance between the borders of the ovals at the top should be greater than at the bottom. | ![]() |
2 | Draw the animal's facial features inside the smaller circle. The eyes are round, the pupils are quite large.
The eyebrows are small in size, resembling a rectangle in shape. At the same time, the eyebrows are at an angle, which makes the character's look kind. The nose resembles a triangle in shape, and the mouth is an arched line. The pupils and main elements of the face can be drawn in advance with a black or simple pencil for convenience. | ![]() |
3 | Draw Cheburashka's ears on both sides of the face. They are ½ the size of the head.
Draw another smaller figure inside the larger oval. The ovals are “attached” to the middle part of the previously drawn head. | ![]() |
4 | The oval that forms the character's head is visually divided into 2 equal parts by a vertical line. Draw the line down to draw the body.
The figure that forms the body resembles a drop, the upper part of which is hidden under Cheburashka's head. On the drawn figure, depict a "collar" of a smaller size. | ![]() |
5 | Add arms to the body. The arms should start in the head area and flow smoothly around the body. In the lower part of the figure's body, form an oval, from which the palm is drawn in the form of a three-dimensional inverted check mark.
Cheburashka's legs form large semi-ovals that are connected to the body by a small rectangle. | ![]() |
6 | The resulting image is colored with a hard pencil to obtain a more distinct outline. Excess elements and details, as well as corrections, are removed with an eraser. | ![]() |
7 | Use a yellow pencil to color the collar, muzzle and the inside of Cheburashka's ears. Using brown, lightly pressing the pencil, add longitudinal lines on the painted surface.
Use an orange or brown pencil to paint the remaining parts of the animal's body. Use a more active shade to fill in the palm area. | ![]() |
The image will be bright if you use felt-tip pens in the process of doing the work. You can use felt-tip pens to color the outline or completely color the drawing.
With Crocodile Gena
Cheburashka (a drawing for children aged 6-7 may be a little more complicated, including a few small details) and Crocodile Gena are the main characters of the cartoon of the same name, so they are often depicted together.
Stages of work execution:
- On a sheet of paper, visually draw a diagonal. Along this diagonal, draw a figure similar to a seed, which will form the head of Crocodile Gena. The lower part of the head should be angular.
- Closer to the top of the head, draw the neck, smoothly flowing into the character's body. The figure resembles a drop. Add oval feet to the bottom, as Crocodile Gena is sitting.
- Cheburashka should be about 2/3 the size of the previously drawn crocodile. Having measured the approximate height, draw an oval, and then another one, smaller.
- At the bottom of the crocodile's head, form a mouth. Bend the upper jaw slightly to make the mouth slightly open. Use arched lines to mark the eye area.
- Visually separate the neck from the body by drawing clothes with a V-neck. Add sleeves on the sides of the body.
- Add big ears to Cheburashka and a muzzle.
- Detail the previously designated eye area and make it more voluminous.
- Add cheeks to the crocodile as shown in the picture.
- Draw the palms and fingers.
- Draw the collar, buttons and top of the shirt on the neck.
- Finish drawing the body of Cheburashka. Its shape resembles a drop with more pronounced angles. Draw a collar inside the body.
Detail Crocodile Gena's face: draw folds on the nose, add nostrils. Draw the tongue and teeth in the mouth, and also add pupils.
- Draw hands from Cheburashka's head. The position can be different - in this case, to the body. At the bottom, the hands are rounded into ovals, from which the palm comes out.
- Attach semi-ovals to the lower part of the body – the character’s legs.
- The finished drawing can be colored with any convenient material.
- Paint the crocodile's head, hands and feet with green. Fill the eyes, nostrils and folds on the nose with black.
- Paint the crocodile's jacket and tongue red, and the shirt and teeth white.
- Paint Cheburashka's body brown. Paint the face, inner part of the ears and the collar on the stomach beige.
- Paint the eyes, nose and hands black, and the smile red-pink.
The finished image can be outlined with a black pencil or pen. If paint was used in the coloring process, the image must first be dried.
Watercolor
Cheburashka is a drawing for children that they will be interested in repeating. It is quite easy to draw, and the result will be natural if you use paints.
Step by step process of doing watercolor work:
- Using a simple pencil (with a soft lead), draw 3 ovals. The largest oval will be the head, so its lower part should be flat.
- Cheburashka will be positioned with a slight turn, so the ear located closer should appear larger.
- When the head is ready, add a small long oval to form the body. On the left side is a small rounded oval - a paw, and on the other side is a rectangle with smoothed corners - the other paw.
- The right leg should look bigger, so you need to draw a large oval. The left leg is slightly smaller than the right, the same shape.
- Trace the lines with a hard pencil and mark the animal’s clothing – a T-shirt with 3/4 sleeves.
- Make the ears voluminous, marking the inner part with thin lines.
- Draw the inner oval that forms the borders of the animal’s face.
- Draw eyebrows along the oval contour. Draw round eyes, a triangular nose and an arched smile.
- Draw a claw from the left paw to the smile, as shown in the picture.
- Using zigzag movements along the contour of the body, draw the voluminous fur of the animal.
- Draw pupils and glare in the eyes. You can make a pattern on the T-shirt, or leave it as is.
- Erase unnecessary lines to get a clean sketch.
- Fill the area of Cheburashka's muzzle with beige paint. Paint the nose and eyes with black paint, leaving the whites of the eyes and highlights untouched. Use a thin brush to draw the mouth and eyebrows of the character.
- Paint the body, ears and head with brown paint, using a thin brush to draw voluminous fur.
- Paint Cheburashka's clothes with red paint.
- When the watercolor is dry, mix a small amount of brown and black paint on the palette. Use the resulting shade to darken the lower part of the ears to show the shadow, as well as the right side of the body.
- Dry the resulting drawing.
- Using a thin brush and black paint, draw the claw, add the outline of the hairs, draw the folds on the clothes and legs.
For a more precise effect, you can use watercolor pencils. They combine the ease of use of colored pencils with the effect of watercolor.
Gouache
A simplified version of drawing Cheburashka is also suitable for children. You can color the finished drawing using gouache.
Stages of work execution:
- Use a pencil to draw an oblong oval with a rectangular shape coming out of the middle. The shape of the image should resemble a mushroom.
- Visually divide the top figure into 4 parts. Leave 1 part on the left and right sides, and connect the middle ones into a large oval. This way you can get Cheburashka's head and ears.
- In the lower figure, form the body and paws of the animal.
- Inside the oval that forms the character's head, draw a circle - the border of the muzzle. Inside the circle, draw eyebrows, large round eyes (and mark the pupils), a nose in the form of a triangle, and an arched mouth.
- Draw a “collar” on the chest.
- Mix a little brown and yellow paint in a palette. Paint the area of the muzzle and collar with the resulting shade.
- Paint the whites of the eyes with white paint, and the pupils, nose and eyebrows with black paint. Using a thin brush, first pick up a small amount of red paint, paint the mouth.
- Use brown gouache to paint over the remaining parts of the character's body and head.
If desired, you can color the space around the character.
Examples of images for copying, tips for beginners
When performing work, you can use the following recommendations:
- to get a beautiful image, you can use images for tracing;
- when doing the work, you can use rulers and a compass. You can also draw all the elements manually. To make the process quicker, you need to draw a frame for each oval and circle, and then draw the circumference. For each element of the drawing, you can select an initial geometric figure;
- When using gouache, you must first dilute the paint with water (in a separate compartment of the palette) in small amounts to a creamy consistency.
The resulting mass can be used to paint a drawing, but the paint must be applied in a thin layer. A thick layer of paint will crumble and crack when drying, which will spoil the appearance of the image;
- It is also necessary to work with watercolors correctly. The brightness of the color depends on the concentration of paint, so it is necessary to control the volume of water;
- In addition to watercolors, you can use watercolor pencils. They allow you to create clear lines and draw small details;
- for working with paints it is better to use thick paper. A regular sheet gets wet and tears easily, but thick drawing paper absorbs water well, leaving the paint on the surface, while maintaining integrity. Also, special paper does not become covered with waves from water;
- You can draw a character with a simple pencil. To color it, use various hatching techniques. To convey the texture of the drawing, you can use multiple diagonal lines that convey the location of light and shadow, or use dots of different sizes and color intensities.
Using these recommendations, you can easily draw and color a popular cartoon character. Cheburashka is a funny hero of a children's book by Eduard Uspensky. The hero was originally drawn and invented in the Soviet Union, and his appearance shook the entire country.
Cheburashka became an idol for many children, as well as a symbol of the Russian national team. But the character caused an even greater stir in Japan. The country bought the rights from Soyuzmultfilm and in 2009 launched an anime series called "What is this Cheburashka?"
