Cactus drawing for kids with pencil

The word cactus hides a whole family of flowering perennials (succulents), which have the property of accumulating moisture in the leaves or tissues of the stems. In their form, plants of this species differ greatly from each other, and many of them are flowering, which makes the process of drawing them is especially exciting.

A cactus (a drawing of it can be drawn with a simple pencil) usually consists of several components.

The main part of a cactus is considered to be its modified stem, which has different shapes and structures, it can be:

• pot-bellied;
• elongated;
• rounded;
• flat;
• lumpy;
• ribbed;
• wrinkly;
• smooth;
• lanuginous.

To depict a plant of the cactus family of any kind on a sheet of paper, you will need the following tools:

Simple pencils of the HB or B brand	You can choose a pencil based on your own preferences, it will have to be used to create sketches and outlines of the image.
Eraser	It will be needed to correct mistakes and remove unnecessary lines while working on a sketch.
A white sheet of paper, cardboard or Whatman paper	The choice of paper depends on your own preferences. The paper can have a smooth or slightly rough surface.
Colored pencils	There are several types of pencils, you need to choose the most suitable for yourself: graphite, watercolor, oil and wax.
Ruler	The tool may be needed to draw straight lines or various geometric shapes.
Masking tape	Masking tape may be useful for marking boundaries and limits on a piece of paper.

Cactus (a flower drawing can be drawn in natural conditions in nature) grows in the deserts of Africa and America. Depending on the habitat and climate in each specific area, the plant can have a different size and shape.

In natural conditions

You can draw a cactus in its natural habitat, against the backdrop of a desert and rocky landscape.

To obtain the desired sketch you need:

1. Draw a horizontal line at the bottom of the page (this will serve as the base for the plant).
2. From the line, draw a tall, elongated arc that will serve as the main stem of the plant.
3. Draw 2 arcs to the right and left of the plant stem; they will serve as additional branches of the plant.
4. Erase the extra lines separating the main stem from the secondary ones.
5. Using small lines and stripes, mark the thorns in a random order on the plant.
6. Outline the thorns with a black pencil, and color the stem and additional branches green.

You can add details to the drawing:

1. Draw rocky mountains in the background and color them with a brown pencil.
2. Place a blue sky and the sun on it above the mountain.
3. On the ground next to the cactus, draw several stones using a simple pencil.

Flowering cactus in a pot

Almost any type of cactus can be grown at home, the plants require a minimum amount of moisture, so the pot for the plant does not necessarily have to be large.

To draw the most common type of cactus of a round shape in a pot, you will need to perform the following actions:

1. Draw a horizontally elongated oval as a base.
2. From the bottom line of the oval, draw 2 slightly curved lines on the sides, and connect them together (to form the top rim of the pot).
3. From the bottom line of the rim, at some distance from the corners, draw 2 almost vertical lines down at a slight angle towards each other, connecting the ends of the lines horizontally.
4. At the top of the pot, using a compass, a large circle is drawn at the intersection with the rim.
5. Using an eraser, remove the extra lines formed by the intersection of the circle with the rim of the pot.
6. From the very top of the circle, lines of indentation (furrows) are marked; they are drawn using curved lines downwards towards the rim of the pot (an example of a sketch would be a cut watermelon).
7. At the place where the furrows begin, mark the middle part of the cactus flower using a small circle.
8. There are 5 small petals on all sides of the circle.
9. Between the petals of the first row, place the 2nd row of petals of the same shape.
10. On the grooves located on the main round stem of the cactus, in a chaotic order, with small lines starting at one point and going in different directions, mark out thorns of different sizes.

To make a drawing of a cactus in color, you can:

• Colour the plant with a green pencil of any shade.
• Highlight the thorns in black or brown.
• The cactus flower is usually red, yellow or orange in color.
• The pot in which the plant is planted can be made of any color.
• The center of the flower is yellow.

In a pot

You can draw a flat cactus planted in a pot. It is similar to the round one, but will differ slightly in detail.

Step-by-step drawing of a prickly eared cactus at home:

1. Closer to the bottom of the sheet of paper, draw a horizontal elongated oval; it will represent the top of the pot.
2. From the most protruding points of the oval, short vertical lines are drawn downwards, which are connected by a horizontal strip to create a voluminous rim.
3. With a small indent from the edges of the rim, vertical lines are drawn downwards at a slight angle, where at the bottom they are connected by a horizontal strip.
4. The cactus is placed above the pot and an oval is drawn into it with a small depression, then the extra pencil lines at the bottom of the flower are erased.
5. Small cactus shoots emerge chaotically from different places, they can be located on top of the main plant or on the sides. There can be several of them in different places or in one place one above the other.
6. The spines of a cactus are depicted as small crossed lines or check marks.
7. The cactus is painted green, the pot can be brown or dark gray.

In a large pot

Cactus (the drawing can display a sketch of several different plants at the same time) of the 1st species can perfectly coexist with specimens of other species.

In a spacious pot you can draw different types of flowers, 2 of which will be round in shape, 1 - an oblong oval.

To do this you will need:

1. Draw 3 different types of cacti (they can be taken from previous master classes).
2. At the bottom of the plants, a line is drawn to the top of the pot.
3. On one of the round cacti, shoots of identical shape, but smaller in size, are added.
4. From the top of the pot, two vertical lines are drawn downwards, indicating its sides; at the bottom, they are connected by a horizontal stripe (the pot should be wide and have a small height).
5. The soil inside the pot is depicted using wavy stripes.
6. The cactus, which has oval branches, is shaded with small lines to indicate the thin needles on its stem.

   

7. The round, branchless cactus is divided by curved grooves – depressions located at equal distances from each other.
8. On a round cactus, the spines are depicted as small check marks or crossed lines.
9. On the upper part of the cactus, which has no branches, a blossoming flower is depicted using a round core and petals around it.
10. The oval and oblong cactus receives small curved and interconnected lines as needles (the space between them is hatched, depicting volume).
11. To give the drawing a more realistic look, shadows are applied to the pot and plants.

Top view of a cactus

The cactus (the picture may be oriented to the top view of the plant) blooms with one or more flowers at certain times.

To transfer blossoming flowers it is necessary:

1. Draw a circle or a slightly flattened oval, which will later become a cactus.
2. Under the circle, from its side points at a fairly decent distance in a downward direction, a line in the shape of a semicircle is drawn; this will be the outline of a flower pot in which a cactus grows.
3. The future pot is given volume by drawing its sides twice, its bottom is made slightly wider than the side walls.
4. A little further down and to the left from the top of the circle, draw several flower cores; they can later be shaded or dotted with numerous dots.
5. Around the cores, mark numerous petals arranged in one row.
6. The round stem of the cactus, starting from the flowers on top and up to the beginning of the upper rim of the pot, is divided by numerous grooves. They can be depicted, to give volume, with different pencils, alternating red and even colors.
7. To make the drawing more realistic, it is painted with colored pencils. The cactus is green, the pot is brown, the flowers are purple or yellow.

With a ball

The cactus can be depicted as a fairy-tale creature with a balloon so that it is not prickly.

To do this you need:

1. From the middle of the sheet, in an upward direction, draw a curved semi-oval, from which a small branch in the form of a semicircle extends.
2. At the bottom of the cactus base, a sketch of the flower pot is made, in which the flower is planted. First, the upper rim of the pot is marked around the base of the flower, then the pot itself is depicted using two vertical lines and a horizontal strip connecting them.
3. From under the side shoot, which depicts the hand of the fairytale cactus, in the direction of the center of the top point of the cactus, draw a slightly unfinished circle, it will depict a balloon.
4. At the bottom of the balloon, a small inverted triangle is depicted with a long wavy thread coming out of it.
5. A smiling mouth and mischievous eyes are added to the main stem of the plant.
6. The finished cactus is painted green, the pot underneath it is painted brown or grey.

To make the drawing look like a fairy tale, the spines of the cactus can be drawn in the form of hearts, with thin shading between them. The balloon can be painted in bright colors: red, yellow or orange.

"Kawaii"

A cute cactus can be drawn planted in a pot.

To draw a cactus in Japanese style, proceed to the step-by-step actions:

1. Draw a horizontal line slightly curved downwards, and from it short vertical stripes downwards. Connect the ends of the lines with an additional segment to obtain the upper rim of the flower pot.
2. Draw vertical stripes down from the lower corners of the rim, which will indicate the sides of the pot. At the bottom, connect the lines with a horizontal stripe, which will indicate its bottom.
3. From the top horizontal line of the rim of the pot, a circle or oval is drawn upwards, indicating the main stem of the plant.
4. Draw rare grooves on the stem from top to bottom to make the cactus appear three-dimensional.
5. Between the drawn grooves, two eyes, a nose and a smiling mouth are marked; to give a sense of life in the eyes, highlights are marked using two circles.

Step-by-step instructions for drawing a plant that grows in the desert:

1. From the bottom of the sheet of paper, draw a rectangle with a rounded top; it will represent the main stem of the cactus.
2. On both sides of the rectangle, at different heights, there are 2 shoots reaching the height of the end of the main stem.
3. A wavy line is added to the bottom of the drawing to indicate the soil level.
4. The entire plant is decorated with vertical lines located at equal intervals; at the bends of the stems, vertical lines are marked horizontally, repeating the position of the shoots.
5. On the sides of the main stem and branches, thorns are drawn using short lines.
6. You can place several large stones near the cactus to create the feeling of being in the desert.
7. Draw the finished drawing of a huge cactus with colored pencils. The cactus should be green, the stones black, the background can be made light blue.

A drawing depicting a cactus can be done using simple geometric shapes: a cylinder, triangle, circle and oval. To do this, schematically represent the main details of the drawing, estimate the scale of different parts of the image and arrange the figures in accordance with the intended sketch.

After the necessary rounding and minor changes to the figures, be sure to erase the extra details marked with a pencil and only then begin coloring.
