A stain on the knee or a cut in the fabric is a good reason to get rid of old trousers and buy new ones. But what if you love a pair and can’t find another one? In this situation, a patch sewn onto jeans will help.
What material to use for patch
A patch on jeans (the fabric most often tears on the knee) not only hides the defect, it can be done as a finishing element. The denim material of trousers goes well with different colors and textures. Depending on the model and purpose of the pair, a patch option is selected.
Fabric from jeans
Classic denim trousers are combined with items of different shades and styles. To make the patch less noticeable, it is cut out of the trouser fabric. It's good if the fabric is preserved after shortening the pair.
The second option is a patch made from the original fabric - the area under the back pocket. Any other fabric of similar density is sewn in place of the cut out fabric.
Adhesive fabric
Minor damage and abrasions are fixed with adhesive material. A thick cotton adhesive with a dotted coating of adhesive composition will do.
For duplication, a part wider and longer than the damaged area is prepared. If the patch is made carefully from adhesive fabric, the work will be barely noticeable. It is not always necessary to hide traces of repair.
Thermal patches
A patch on jeans on the knee or another part of the trousers, made in the form of embroidery, plays the role of decoration.
Embroidered pictures on fabric impregnated with textile glue on the reverse side are available in different colors and themes. On sale are pictures from popular children's cartoons, army symbols, flowers, animals, birds.
The size of the heat-treated patch should be a couple of centimeters larger than the tear. The damage is fixed with light stitches without tension. The trim is glued using a hot iron with steam for several minutes.
Lace, colored, leather options
Depending on what clothes the trousers are worn with most often, patches made of a material other than denim are selected.
Trouser model and denim color | Material and color of the patch | Upper part of the set |
Light boyfriends; white jeans | White dense lace, white large-mesh net | White shirt or tank top |
Black | Black lace, black leather | Biker jacket, white shirt |
Blue boyfriends; cropped jeans | Colored check; black fabric | Biker jacket, white shirt |
Blue thin mom cropped jeans | Floral fabric | Solid color tank top; floral blouse |
Blue; black | Fabric with sequins | Silk blouse, tank top with sequin applique |
The patterned fabric chosen for the patch should not match the top of the outfit. It is enough that one color or shade is common.
Machine embroidery, patches
The spread of embroidery machines allows anyone to order embroidery on jeans to their taste. After its execution, there will be no trace of the damage that caused the transformation.
Machine embroidery is done with silk threads, the color and pattern can be chosen from those offered in the studio. An alternative to machine embroidery can be a patch made from embroidery done on another fabric.
DIY patch on jeans using a sewing machine
Most people have a good sewing machine at home, and its presence allows you to repair your favorite pair of jeans yourself. The more special operations the machine performs, the more interesting the result will be.
In addition to the sewing machine, you need to prepare the following for work:
- repair material;
- ruler and tape measure;
- threads of a color similar to the fabric of the trousers;
- sharp scissors for small jobs;
- cutting scissors;
- ripper;
- tailor's pins;
- adhesive fabric.
All preparatory work is carried out on a table, in good lighting.
How to do the stucco
A patch on jeans (on the knee, between the legs, under the knee) is most often done using the stitching method. The method will hide the abrasions and strengthen the fabric of the adjacent areas of the product.
It is performed in the following order:
- A patch of similar configuration and larger in size than the damaged area is cut out.
- The edge of the patch is overcast using an overlock or zigzag stitch on a sewing machine.
- From the reverse side, using adhesive web, the patch is glued to the duplicated area.
- The sewing machine is threaded with denim-colored threads.
- At first, the stitching is done in the direction opposite to the position of the fabric rib. The distance between the lines can be about 0.7 cm.
- Stitching in the direction of the denim rib covers the lines of the first operation and is done much thicker - 0.3-0.2 cm.
- Depending on the degree of damage, the stitching may be more or less dense.
Correctly executed stitching is almost invisible, allowing to extend the service life of the pair without changing the appearance.
How to beautifully sew up a tear in fabric or a seam on the knee
A patch on the knee of one or both legs of jeans is done in the following sequence:
- The trouser leg is the narrowest in the knee area. For ease of work, the outer side seam, which has no finishing stitch, is ripped from the bottom to the middle of the thigh.
- To ensure that the patch does not interfere with the dynamics, the fabric is chosen to be loose, slightly thinner than on the trousers. The patch can be of any shape: square, oval or diamond-shaped.
- The patch is pinned to the knee of the jeans and sewn on with a sewing machine. The allowance of the part is cut off by 3 mm.
- Using a thick zigzag stitch, the patch is processed around the perimeter in such a way that the straight stitching line and the cut allowance are hidden.
Threads for the finishing stitch are selected to match the fabric or a contrasting color.
How to sew decorative elements
Leisure wear and children's jeans are often decorated with decorative stripes and embroidery. Damage to the fabric can also be covered with a colored stripe, the design of the clothes will only benefit from this.
You can sew on decorative elements in different ways:
- manually with neat small stitches;
- with colored zigzag and straight stitch along the perimeter of the patch.
It is good if the decorative stripes are selected in the style of the existing ones. On trousers without stripes, the design will have to be created independently. Some of the stripes will hide defects, and some will be sewn on only for decoration.
How to put an invisible patch
To make an invisible patch, select a fabric similar to the material of the trousers. The damaged area is cut out in the shape of an oval or square. The patch repeats the shape of the cut out part, but is larger by the allowance amount. The direction of the warp thread on the trouser leg and the patch should match, so the result of the repair will be barely noticeable.
The workpiece is placed under the trouser part and stitched with a straight line. The allowance is cut off by 0.3 cm and secured with a small zigzag. The closer the threads of the last line are in color to the trouser material, the less noticeable the work will be.
How to do without a patch
A small damage where threads are still present can be sewn up without using a patch. To secure the repaired area, use an adhesive insert slightly larger than the worn area. The backing fabric is glued on from the inside using a hot iron.
The front side is stitched using a machine. The stitching threads of a suitable color fasten the damaged area and the adhesive fabric, the denser the zigzag of the stitches, the stronger the repair result will be.
Using thermal printing will help you avoid using a patch. First, you need to make a stencil. A special acrylic paint is used. As a result, a defect carefully fixed in any way (except a patch), thanks to a bright pattern, will be completely invisible. To do without a patch, you can turn trousers into shorts.
How to Beautifully Hide Damage to Denim Above the Knee
Damage above the knee during movement has less effect on the comfort of trousers. A patch in this part of the leg can be made of any fabric. The requirements for strength and ergonomics are much lower than for damage on the knee.
Beautiful options for this area:
- Lace fabric stitched on the inside. The beautiful trim can be repeated on the other leg.
- Colored fabric with a pattern. A patch made of fabric with a checkered pattern looks stylish.
For a more effective look, the damaged area can be cut out much larger than the size of the damage. The edges can be frayed, the same treatment is used on the bottom of jeans.
If the material is torn vertically, the defect can be turned into a pocket with a metal zipper:
- From similar or finishing fabric, cut out 2 strips to form a pocket in a frame.
- The slit on the trousers is fixed with glue from the inside.
- The pocket facings are folded in half and sewn on in a “frame” pattern.
- The pocket is cut and turned inside out.
- On the reverse side, in the center, there is a zipper.
- The zipper is sewn on at the same time as the pocket lining.
- The pocket burlap pieces are sewn together. The seam is overcast.

You can make a patch pocket by first fixing the damage with glue and light stitching.
Hand darning
More skill and patience will be required for manual repairs.
For a rectangular hole, hand darning is used:
- The thread of the appropriate color should be threaded twice into the needle.
- Having secured the thread on one side of the rectangular hole, you need to pull it to the opposite side and secure it with one stitch.
- The thread is secured again on the first side and so on until the entire “window” of the hand patch is filled.
- In the second direction, the needle and thread alternately intertwine the threads of the opposite direction. The result is a dense mesh. It hides the defect and serves as a decoration.
This was the method used to mend socks. The patches looked beautiful and spoke of the woman's skill.
How to quickly close torn areas if there is no time
The process of mending jeans or sewing on a patch takes a lot of time or requires the use of a sewing machine. If there is no time and the necessary equipment, you can decorate the damaged area on the knee with a sticker of Swarovski crystals.
There are ready-made designs on sale, they are the easiest to work with. It is enough to choose a design of a suitable theme and size. You can buy rhinestones with an adhesive coating and lay out a design from them yourself.
The whole work is completed in several steps:
- The damaged area is cut out. A patch of similar fabric is placed underneath.
- The edges of the bottom part are glued with adhesive web or sewn along the perimeter.
- A pattern of rhinestones is laid out on the area to be covered. It is covered with a piece of fabric and fixed with the temperature of an iron.
- The trousers are turned inside out and the area to be treated is carefully ironed from the inside out.
A kind of lifesaver when there is a lack of time for a long repair are thermal patches. The procedure for working with them is the same as with a rhinestone pattern. The quality of the repair depends on the iron mode and the time of its action. You can check the quality of gluing after the ironed area has completely cooled down.
Ideas for the most beautiful and stylish patches
Depending on the purpose of the jeans, the embroidery pattern and the type of patch material are selected.
For boys and girls
Children's clothes are bright, for their decoration you can use patches from multi-colored pieces of durable fabric. All seams should be durable, there should be no protruding threads, fringe and buttons for the sake of decoration.

The child will be delighted with an applique with embroidery in the form of a favorite cartoon character, it is easy to order it in a studio or choose a heat-seal. Patches can also be made in the form of a heart, apple or animal.
For women
The modern fashion for ripped jeans leaves room for creativity when decorating trousers:
- iron-on embroidery stickers and rhinestone designs;
- patches made of lace and patterned fabric;
- acrylic paint drawing using a stencil;
- applique made of colored fabric and leather.
The design style can also be varied, from a vamp woman to a romantic girl.
For men
The stronger half prefers patches made of genuine leather. A knee injury can be covered with a patch of genuine leather sewn into the side seams. The holes can be enlarged, the edges can be frayed, and this can be done on many ready-made fashion trousers.
Decorated jeans have become a fashion trend in recent years. By sewing on a decorative fabric as a patch on the knee or hips, there is a chance not only to save your favorite pair, but also to improve their appearance. If the style should remain the same, an inconspicuous patch is made on the damaged area. Most defects in denim can be repaired and the trousers can be worn further.
