Wrap Skirt. How to sew it yourself for beginners: pattern, instructions, photos

The wrap skirt has become one of the most fashionable styles that can be worn to business meetings, festive events, and to the beach. This model can be easily sewn at home. For beginner seamstresses, there are special, easier and more accessible patterns, which are described in this article.

Choosing fabric for sewing a wrap skirt

Before sewing a wrap skirt, you should choose the right fabric. Chiffon is more often used for items intended for going to the beach. If you need a smart chiffon skirt for an event, you need to take care of the availability of lining fabric.

It is sewn from opaque thin material according to the same pattern as the top. For a business suit or autumn-spring skirts, the fabric is thicker, like "Oxford".

It is recommended to start sewing wrap skirts with summer fabrics (the motley color and patterns on the fabric will hide possible sewing flaws). Viscose, cotton jersey or linen are good choices. When choosing a material for winter skirts, remember that too dense fabric will create a thickness at the entry point.

The principle of constructing a pattern for a wrap skirt

A wrap skirt, the pattern for beginners of which is simple, is constructed as follows:

  1. A sample of the required model is applied to the paper.
  2. Measurements are taken from the customer.
  3. A sketch is made on tracing paper and cut out.
  4. The sketch is transferred onto the fabric and cut out.

When transferring the sketch onto the fabric, you should leave an allowance for seams (1.5-2 cm) and darts (1.5 cm).

Construction of darts:

  1. Divide the front half of the skirt into 2 parts, step back 1 cm towards the side line and draw a straight line 8 cm long down.
  2. From the top point of the line to the middle of the front half, step back 8 mm and draw a line down to this straight line.
  3. Mark the points with pins and transfer to the other half of the fabric.
  4. Divide the back half of the skirt into 2 and step back 1 cm to the side. Draw a straight line 12 cm long.
  5. At the waist line, step back 8 mm from the dart and draw a straight line to the lowest point of the dart.
  6. Transfer the back dart to the other half and baste.

To prevent the skirt from hanging loose and to make it look nice on your figure, it is recommended to narrow the bottom:

  • Before cutting out the halves, mark the bottom of the skirt + 4 cm.
  • Draw lines.
  • From the side line of the front half of the bottom, step back 2 cm towards the middle and put a point.

  • From the hip line, draw a straight line to the marked point (4 cm down from it, the line should be straight, since it will be hemmed).
  • Use a template to round off the angle of the thigh.
  • Repeat the same with the back half of the skirt.

The skirt can be narrowed from 1 to 3 cm. The best option is 2-2.5 cm.

Sewing a simple wrap skirt. Step-by-step instructions with detailed descriptions

To sew a wrap skirt, you need to take the following measurements:

  • waist circumference (W);
  • hip circumference (H);
  • skirt length (L.i);
  • approach line (AL);

Below is a table that will make it easy to take measurements.

Necessary measurements How to take measurements
Waist circumference Place a measuring tape around the narrowest part of your stomach and connect the edges on your left side. To make it easier to find, you can ask your elbow to bend, which is where your waist line is.
Hip circumference The hips are the widest part of the body. To measure them, wrap a tape measure around the widest part of your buttocks and meet the edges on the left side.
Length of product The length of the product is measured from the side of the waist line in a straight line. 4 cm are added to the length, which will be hemmed. If there is a belt, its width should be subtracted from the length.
Line of approach The waist line is measured from one side to the other. It is usually 15 cm.

When constructing clothes, only half of the volumes are used – Sat, St.

The easiest way to sew a wrap skirt looks like this:

  • Pre-wash the fabric and iron it on both sides to avoid shrinkage.
  • Fold from the wrong side edge to edge.
  • From the fold side, step back 2 cm and draw a straight line along the edge of the fabric, aligning it (waist line).
  • From the waist line, measure down 17 cm (in larger sizes 18-19 cm) and draw a straight line (hip line).
  • The back part of the skirt is constructed from the fold side. Step back by St + dart (1.5 cm) + seam allowance (2 cm). Put a mark.
  • On the hip line, step back from the fold by Сб + seam allowance. Put a mark. Connect the waist line with the hip line.
  • From the waistline, mark the length of the skirt + 4 cm and draw it along the entire fabric to the edge. (4 cm at the end are sewn with blind stitches by hand).
  • From the edge, step back 15 cm (the line of the skirt's entry) and draw a straight line down. The entry line can be smaller or larger, depending on the desired model of the skirt. It should be remembered that too small an entry will open up, and too large will not look good.

  • From the entry line, draw a straight line at the waist (St + dart + seam allowance).
  • Draw a line (Sat + seam allowance) from the hip line.
  • Construct the front and front darts and transfer to the other half of the fabric. Baste. When placing the halves on top of each other, the darts should match.
  • Cut out a belt for the skirt 8 cm wide and glue it with adhesive fabric. Fold in half and sew to the waist.

The bottom of the piece of fabric that will go over can be cut, lengthened or given any shape.

Long wrap skirt

A wrap skirt (a pattern for beginners is presented further in the article) of floor length looks very beautiful and feminine. At the same time, it is quite modest and at the same time mysterious. Despite the length, the skirt will still come apart, so a long skirt is often sewn for going to the beach. Sewing such a skirt is no different from sewing a short length and does not require a special approach.

How to Cut Fabric for a Long Wrap Skirt

A long wrap skirt is cut out as follows:

  • Take measurements from the customer.
  • Draw the model on paper, paying attention to detail.

How to sew a long wrap skirt

A long wrap skirt is sewn as follows:

  • First of all, mark the darts and transfer them to the other halves of the pieces.
  • Sweep the darts.
  • Fold the back half of the skirt with the front half (the darts should match each other when placed) and baste the side seams by 1-2 cm (depending on how many cm were left for the allowance).
  • Try on the skirt and make sure it fits your figure.
  • Machine stitch along the darts and side seams.
  • Overlock the side seams and the bottom. If the fabric is thin, overlock the side seams together; if it is thick, overlock them one at a time.
  • Iron the skirt. Direct the darts towards each other.
  • Cut out a belt 8 cm wide and 2 cm long. Glue the belt with adhesive fabric and iron it, folding it in half horizontally.

  • Baste one side of the waistband to the skirt and machine stitch.
  • Machine stitch the sides of the belt inside out.
  • Turn the waistband inside out, iron it and sew the other edge to the skirt with blind stitches by hand.
  • Fold the bottom of the skirt by 4 cm and baste. Sew with blind stitches or glue with cobweb.

When gluing the bottom with a spider web, you need to be prepared for it to come off after the first wash. Therefore, it is recommended to process the bottom manually with hidden seams - the highest quality option, although it is not suitable for all fabric styles. If the fabric is lightweight, like chiffon, it is permissible to go over it with a machine stitch.
