Crochet flowers, are considered one of the simplest decorative elements. Roses, crocheted according to a pattern with a description to it, can decorate clothes, for example, a hat or a blouse, become part of the interior. The variety of patterns makes the knitting process more accessible for beginner craftswomen.
Necessary tools and materials
A crochet rose, the diagram and description of which help to create various decorative items, can be used in various areas. Volumetric crochet roses can be used as decoration for napkins on the table. They can also be used to tie fabric napkins. Headwear can be decorated with a flower made of yarn. Beach bags are also often decorated with roses made of yarn.
Many needlewomen decorate jeans belts with knitted flowers. The knitted rose has become part of handmade jewelry: it can be found on bracelets, hair bands, chokers. Postcards, albums and notebooks made using the scrapbooking technique are often decorated with small flowers made of various yarns.
Crochet rose, the pattern and description of which have become widely popular among craftswomen, is created using the following materials and tools:
- Yarn of any thickness and color suitable for knitting a rose.
- A hook that matches the thickness of the yarn.
- Scissors.
- Needle.
- Threads for sewing the flower. They should be the same thickness as the yarn.
- Rose diagram.
- Artificial stem (if the flower will be used as an interior decoration).
Everything you need to create artificial roses can be purchased at any craft store.
It is necessary to clarify that in some master classes it is necessary to prepare 2 hooks. One of them, thicker, will be used for knitting air loops, and the hook of a smaller diameter is used to knit the rest of the future rose.
To avoid mistakes when selecting hooks and yarn, you can present the correspondence of hook and yarn numbers in the table.
Hook number | Description of yarn |
0.6 mm – 1 mm | Very fine cotton threads. |
1.25 mm – 1.75 mm | Fine cotton threads, fine yarns made of other materials. |
2mm – 3.5mm | Medium thickness yarn. |
4 mm – 5 mm | Medium thickness yarn with double thread. |
5.5 mm – 6 mm | Fluffy double thread. |
7 mm – 8 mm | Wool yarn for tapestry, double wool thread. |
9 mm – 1 cm | Thick twisted yarn. |
Master class on crocheting a rose
A crochet rose, the pattern and description of which are clear to both experienced and novice needlewomen, can become part of any item of clothing, a pattern of roses can decorate a blouse or vest. Also, a crocheted flower can be put in a vase and decorate a room. It will not wither and can stand for a long time, which is an advantage of this type of decoration.
Despite the fact that currently there are many master classes and lessons with diagrams and descriptions, there are only 2 main techniques for creating a flower from yarn: the straight lace technique and the petal method.

The knitting pattern using the straight lace technique can be described as follows:
- Knit 66 chain stitches to form a chain.
- Count 5 loops from the end of this chain, knit a double crochet in the 6th loop.
- Step back 2 loops, in the 3rd knit a single crochet. Knit 2 air loops, fasten with a single crochet also in the 3rd loop. As a result of these actions, check marks should form.
- Repeat steps 1–3 until the end of the row.
- Turn the knitted piece over, having knitted 3 lifting loops beforehand.
- In each of the formed check marks, knit 2 double crochets, 3 chain stitches, 2 double crochets.
- Perform the action from step 5 again.
- In each of the check marks, consisting of 3 loops, knit 7-8 columns with a yarn over. Between the resulting arches, knit a single crochet. Repeat this action until the end of the row.
- Once the row is completed, secure the thread with a chain stitch and a slip stitch.
- Twist the knitted ribbon, forming a bud and secure by sewing the petals with threads.
It should be noted that to obtain a small flower, you should reduce the number of loops in the initial chain: for example, you can knit not 66 loops, but 48 loops.
A crochet rose, knitted using the petal method according to the diagram with the description of this technique, turns out more lush, voluminous and realistic. The creation of a rose using this method should begin with knitting the 3 lower petals.
They are knitted according to the steps described below:
- Knit 2 air loops. Count 2 loops from the hook and knit 6 single crochets into it.
- Start knitting 2 rows, while in each of the loops of this row knit 2 single crochets.
- In the next row, add 2 single crochets through 1 loop. As a result of these steps, 18 loops should be formed.
- In the 4th row, add a column in every 3rd loop. This will form 6 more columns.
- Get an additional 30 loops by knitting a column in every 4 loop of 5 rows.
- In the 6th row, knit 4 single crochets, 5 half crochets, 5 crochets. In the next 2 loops, knit 2 crochets. Repeat these steps, but in mirror order, starting knitting with 5 crochets with 1 crochet, and finishing with 4 single crochets.
- Secure the knitting with a slip stitch.
- Connect the connected petals to form a bud and sew them with thread.
Next, you need to knit the next 3 petals of the future rose.
The description of the process is as follows:
- Knit the first 5 rows in the same way as the first rows of the lower petals.
- In every 5th loop of the 6th row, knit additional columns.
- In the next row, add columns into every 6th loop. This will form 42 loops.
- Row 8 should be started by knitting 6 single crochets, 7 half crochets, 6 double crochets, then adding 2 single crochets. After that, knit an element resembling an arch, forming 3 air loops and knit a connecting loop into the original column. Repeat the knitting in mirror image: start by adding 2 columns, and finish by knitting 6 single crochets.
- Sew 3 petals to the already connected lower ones, using threads.
The creation of the yarn rose is completed by knitting the outer petals.
You need to knit 4 of these petals.
- Knit the first 7 rows of these petals in the same way as the first rows of the middle petals.
- Add stitches into every 7th loop of row 8. This will give you 48 stitches.
- In the 9th row, knit 7 single crochets, 34 half crochets, 7 single crochets.
- Row 10, circular, should start with 7 single crochet stitches, then knit 17 additional stitches, an element resembling an arch, repeat knitting 17 stitches, finish the row by knitting 7 single crochet stitches.
- Secure the 4 tied petals to the bud with thread.
The crochet rose, the diagram and description of which are discussed in this article, can be made in various techniques. Thus, an element called a flat rose can be used in Irish lace.
This type of lace is a crochet technique that involves joining small flat pieces together to form a larger knitted fabric. These pieces can be joined together with or without fabric.
Before you start knitting the flower itself, you need to knit a ring that will make the middle of the future rose denser.
When knitting a flower, you need to follow these steps:
- Forming a dense center, fold the thread 4 times so that 2 loops are formed on one side, and on the opposite side a loop and a tail of 2 threads should be formed. One of these threads becomes the working thread.
- From one loop, knit 3 air loops and secure them in the shape of a ring with a single crochet.
- Tie a chain of 4 threads with single crochets and tie the resulting cord into a knot.
- Having connected the loop from the working thread with 1 column, secure the knot. Knitting of the core is finished.
The 4 threads that remain after knitting the dense core of the rose form the basis of the petals of the 1st row.
The flower petals should be crocheted according to the following steps:
- Knit 10 simple columns around 4 threads of the center. Secure the petal at the core with a connecting column. Repeat this action 5-6 times, knitting the petals.
- After the first row is completed, go up and repeat the steps from point 1. Continue knitting until the thread used in knitting runs out.
- To make the rose bigger, you can knit large petals. To do this, you need to cast on 10 stitches, secure the element with a connecting loop at a short distance from the beginning of the knitting. Thus, knit the entire product in a circle.
- Crochet the petals in the following order: 2 single crochets, half crochet, 9 double crochets, repeat half crochet, finish with 2 single crochets.
- Form 4 lifting loops.
- Insert the hook into the top of one arch and knit 12 air loops, secure the chain at the top of the next petal. Repeat this action, tie the entire flower.
- Following this sequence, tie all the upper petals: knit 3 simple columns, 2 half columns, 11 columns with a yarn over, 2 half columns, 3 simple columns.
- Crochet the top row of loops with single crochet stitches. The rose is now finished.
Both an experienced needlewoman and a beginner craftswoman can crochet a rose using patterns with descriptions. The abundance of patterns and knitting options allows you to understand where to start working and how to properly knit artificial flowers.
