A cook is an ancient profession, whose homeland is considered to be Ancient Egypt. The active development of the profession contributed to the creation of cooking schools. The first such school appeared in Ancient Rome (400 BC). Modern cooking began its development in England, and then spread to France.
The first culinary school in Russia opened only in 1888. It is quite difficult to draw a chef, as the image contains a large number of complex details. This work is suitable for older children.
Pencil drawing
A cook (a drawing for children in pencil is given below in the text) is a difficult profession.
It is believed that due to the high level of stress, a difficult schedule and many external stimuli, this profession is only for men. These and other opinions lead to a constant struggle between women and men for the right to be considered the best cooks.
Pencils, paper and supplies
To complete the work you will need:
- simple pencil;
- eraser;
- sharpener;
- sheet of paper.
It is best to use several pencils with different leads.
Step by step process of execution
The step-by-step process of completing the work can be divided into 5 stages:
Stage | Description of the stage | Image |
Creating the Big Picture | 1. On a clean sheet of paper, draw an oval head. It should follow the curves of a person. 2. It is important to make small depressions in the places where the eyes will be located, indicate the cheekbones and slightly sharpen the chin. 3. Divide the head area with a vertical arcuate line into 2 parts of different widths. 4. Use a small line to indicate the level of the eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows and hair growth. Schematically indicate the location of the ear and draw its outline. 5. To draw the chest, you will need to draw a rectangle, and then add a triangle and a small rectangle for the shoulders. 6. Using tubular elements, draw the hands. On the left hand of the mannequin, draw a finger in the form of a curved tube. 7. Draw a large oval in the mannequin's hands. Add a thin border to the bottom to show the volume of the element. | ![]() |
Basic elements | 1. Visually mark a point located just above the ear. From this point, draw an arched line across the entire surface of the head to mark the bottom edge of the chef's hat.
2. Place halves of ovals on the lines drawn for the eyes. Sharpen the ends of the figures. 3. Use curved lines to mark the lower part of the nose and lips. Using curved lines, draw the shape of the chef. Add folds at the bend of the sleeve. 4. On the plate, by connecting several semi-ovals and curves, depict a chicken. Oval figures with lines inside are baked sweet potatoes. Triangles with smooth angles are carrots. | ![]() |
Drawing the face and clothes | 1. Draw an uneven rectangle above the chef's head and add a slightly curved line in the middle. On the face, draw the nose, nasolabial folds, eyelids and eyebrows.
2. Add creases to the suit sleeves – small lines of different sizes in a chaotic order. On the chest – draw 2 columns of buttons in 3 rows. 3. Using short arched lines, depict cuffs on the chef's wrist. On the right side of the suit, draw a pocket - a thin rectangle. | ![]() |
Additional elements of the face, clothing | 1. Use the eraser to remove unnecessary elements of the drawing. You can also correct some figures.
2. Draw hair sticking out from under the cap on the temples. Use uneven vertical lines to depict folds on the cap. 3. Using short, thin lines, draw the chef’s thick mustache, add small lines under the eyes and in the direction “from the ear” – the lower eyelids and cheekbones. 4. Using lines of different shapes and lengths, add folds to the chef's clothes. 5. On the lower part of the chicken carcass, draw small dots located close to each other – the texture of the element. On the potato, the dots should be larger, but rarer. You can draw a small rectangle on top – a piece of butter. To convey the texture of the carrot, you will need small horizontal lines. | ![]() |
Applying shadow | 1. Using a pencil, shade the left side of the cap and the area of the head underneath it.
2. Add active shadow to the lower part of the sleeves, as well as the suit where several elements meet. 3. Use a thin pencil to slightly darken the lower part of the chicken. Apply a more active shadow to the lower edge of the potato. | ![]() |
To complete the work you will need pencils with soft and hard leads.
Soft pencils can be used to draw the first lines, as they create a light drawing that can be removed or corrected later. Hard lead makes a clear line and also leaves a characteristic mark. It is important to use well-sharpened pencils when doing the work.
With colored pencils
The cook (a drawing for children aged 4 to 6) looks quite comical in most cartoons. Most often, the character is plump, has pronounced facial features (a large nose), sometimes a moustache. This image is easy to remember and repeat.
Pencils, paper and supplies
To complete the work you will need:
- a sheet of paper with a rough surface;
- pencils (plain and colored);

- eraser;
- sharpener.
Since the drawing does not use perfectly straight geometric shapes, there is no need for compasses and rulers.
Step by step process of execution
Step-by-step process of completing the work:
- Draw a small oval on a sheet of paper. It should be slightly narrowed at the top and wide at the bottom.
- Visually divide the figure into 3 equal parts (vertically). Separate the upper part from the rest with an arched line.
- Divide the figure horizontally into 2 parts so that the left part is slightly larger than the right.
- Draw a larger shape, similar to an almond, under the drawn element.
- Using arched lines, make the chef's protruding wide chin. Using an oval figure located below the horizontally marked line, draw the location of the ear.

- Visually draw a vertical line from the ear to the other side of the figure. Draw a massive nose in the form of an unfinished oval and add several arched lines - as shown in the picture.
- Draw oval eyes above the nose. Use smaller ovals to depict the pupils. Also add arched, highly raised eyebrows.
- With a small oval, show part of the ear on the right side of the drawing. On the left side, add a strand of hair, and also show the folds inside the ear.
- Draw a line for the mouth under the nose and also add an arched element – a protruding chin.
- The top of the head is “cut off” with an inclined line – the lower edge of the cap.
- Draw the figure as shown in the picture.
- At the bottom of the image, draw several rectangles of different sizes that overlap each other to create the chef's costume.
- Add tubular elements with bends - the cook's hands.
- At shoulder level, add small thin lines – fold points.
- Separate the part of the sleeve on the left side of the pattern with a thin arched line to create a cuff.
- Divide the chef's suit into elements - as shown in the picture, add the edging and buttons.
- Draw the brush on the chef's body using thin unfinished ovals.
- Draw 2 tubular elements at the bottom, gradually narrowing downwards. Connect them with a small line. Draw additional elements on the chef's pants - seams, stitches and pockets.
- Add shapes that resemble the outline of a seed. Draw the sole of the shoe.
- Using an eraser, remove unnecessary elements from the drawing.
When the base is ready, you can begin to add color to the drawing. Chef's uniforms are mostly made in white. This option is considered classic, it is used in children's cartoons and films. Currently, black and crimson fabric is gradually used to create work clothes.
Stages of coloring a drawing:
- Use a blue pencil to color the pants, the top of the clothes and the chef's hat. Press lightly on the pencil to get a light shade.
- To complete the work you will need a white pencil. Use a white pencil to smooth out the previously drawn blue lines.
- Use a red pencil to fix the result.
- Use a black pencil to duplicate the buttons of the suit and also paint the shoes. When drawing the sole, you will need to make the color more intense.
- Use a green pencil to color the eyes and add pupils using a black pencil.
- Using a red pencil, barely touching the lead to the paper, color the cook's face and hand.
- Add a light tint of yellow on top.
- With the same care, fix the result with a brown pencil.
- In this way, you can get a skin tone. In the process, it is important to maintain proportions in applying the color.
The finished drawing can be colored along the outline with a black felt-tip pen.
Gouache
The cook (a drawing for children aged 2 to 4) is a complex character. It can be depicted using geometric shapes. Even a child can handle this work, and the finished image can be painted with gouache.
Pencils, paper and supplies
To complete the work you will need:
- ruler;
- simple pencil;
- set of paints;
- palette;
- eraser.
You will also need brushes to work with paint. It is best to use brushes of different sizes.
Step by step process of execution
When doing the work, you need to be guided by the presented image:

Stages:
- At the top of the sheet, draw a flattened oval. Using a ruler, add 2 rectangles of different sizes. Arrange the figures as shown in the picture.
- Using trapezoids and rectangles, assemble the outline of the fell.
- Add 2 trapezoids to the bottom figure as shown in the picture. Smooth the corners first to get boots.
- From the top of the tall rectangle (the character's body), draw 2 tubular elements. Attach a palm and 4 fingers to the end of each.
- From the previously formed oval in the upper part of the drawing, create the top of the cap. To do this, divide the oval into 3 parts and draw arched lines. Connect the resulting shape with the lower figures.
- On the next figure, draw a face, and also add a circle on each side – an ear.
- Divide the body with a vertical line, add a triangle on each side at the top, and then draw the buttons.
- Fill the area of the chef's hat and body with white paint.
- Paint the boots with brown paint.
- Fill the character's pants with black paint and draw the buttons using a thin brush.
- Mix some brown and white paint on a palette. Use the resulting shade to paint the chef's face, ears and hands.
For accuracy, draw the elements of the face using a felt-tip pen or marker. Let the paint dry first.
Watercolor
A cook (picture) for children is (in most cases) a funny character. In fairy tales, cartoons and books, he is depicted as a plump, almost round man with a thick moustache and a high voice. You can draw and color such a character using watercolors.
Pencils, paper and supplies
To complete the work you will need:
- watercolor paints;
- compass;
- ruler;
- simple pencil;
- brushes and tools for working with paints;
- eraser;
- a sheet of white paper.
When working with paint, it is important to follow the instructions and rules of use.
Step by step process of execution
Step by step process:
- Draw a small circle on a sheet of paper using a compass.
- Stepping down a little, draw a larger circle that will include about a third of the previously drawn shape.
- Divide the small circle into 4 equal parts using a ruler.
- Using the center point, draw a round nose with a compass.
- Draw round eyes on either side of the vertical line, and also add the outlines of the ears, also using circles.
- Using the nose as a reference point, draw a wide mustache. This will require arched lines.
- Use an eraser to remove the previously drawn straight lines and also remove the extra parts of the circle.
- Draw a visual vertical line just above the chef's eyes. Draw a small trapezoid.
- In the upper part of the drawing, use a compass to draw 4 circles of different diameters.
- Connect the sides of the large circle to the bottom using right triangles.
- Use the eraser to remove all unnecessary lines and elements to get the chef's hat and suit.
- At the bottom of the drawing, draw 2 rectangles, connecting them with flattened ovals.
- At the top, add wide rectangles and attach circles to the ends.
- Use an eraser to erase the extra lines, as shown in the picture.
- At the bottom of the drawing, duplicate the bottom border of the ovals to create the sole of the shoes.
- Using semi-ovals and curved lines, form the palm as shown in the picture.
- Add small indentations in the ears, draw the eyebrows and pupils.
- Detail the costume: add a bandage on the neck, buttons. Draw laces on the shoes.
- Any element should be "inserted" into the cook's right hand. In this case, a rooster. If desired, you can draw a kitchen knife or ladle.
- Mix a small amount of white and gray paint on a palette. Use a large brush to paint the entire surface of the chef's cap and the top of the suit.
- Use brown paint to paint the character's mustache, eyebrows and boots. Mix a little brown and black paint and paint the soles using a thin brush.
- Paint the chef's neck bandage and the rooster's comb red.
- Mix equal amounts of red and yellow paint. Paint the chicken carcass with the resulting shade.
- Paint the chef's pants black.
- Using a small amount of red paint, apply it to the chef's nose with a thin brush. Spread the shade over the character's face, adding a small amount of white.
- To get a neat drawing, you can use watercolor pencils.
- Dry the finished image naturally in a horizontal position.
- Use a black watercolor pencil to duplicate all the lines and folds, and also draw the laces on the shoes, the pupils and the buttons.
- Using the pencil lead, add shadows under the armpit and on the left side of the drawing.
- Using a thin brush and a minimal amount of liquid, spread the paint over the design to create a smooth transition.
Dry the finished image. If desired, duplicate the outline with a felt-tip pen or gel pen.
A cook is an interesting profession that is often found in cartoons for children. The most famous cartoon related to cooking is "Ratatouille". The role of the cook is played by a rat that controls a person. You can draw the characters of the cartoon using the presented options for doing the job.
