Angora hats are women's headwear made from warm downy yarn with the addition of synthetic or silk fibers.
Made to measure, such products retain heat well and are suitable for the cold season, but require careful care to preserve the original appearance of the product for a long time.
Necessary tools
It is recommended to knit angora hats for women from special yarn made from rabbit or mink down with the addition of wool (mohair or merino), silk, synthetic (acrylic, viscose or polyester) fibers.

This is done to increase the wear resistance of the material, since the yarn made from natural down is not durable, quickly wears out, becomes thinner and stretches out a lot.
The angora content in the thread should be at least 50-80%, which will allow us to produce not only a warm, but also a very soft, delicate product for the skin, which does not provoke allergic reactions even with increased hypersensitivity.
Types of angora yarn suitable for working with:
Yarn Art Angora Ram | Yarn consisting of 400% Angora rabbit down. Thread with lurex is also produced. It can be used for hand knitting, but finished products made from it do not tolerate machine washing well. |
The Neige boule | Fluffy yarn recommended for crocheting with 100% angora content. The disadvantage of the threads is the strong shrinkage of the finished product when washing. |
Biagioli modesto | A thin, uniform thread, evenly twisted and used for knitting with 80% angora and 20% polyamide. |
Pecci Filati | Machine knitting threads with 70% angora and 30% wool content, do not deform, hold their shape well, and fluff up evenly. |
Cariaggi | Specially treated yarn with 90% rabbit down and 10% polyamide. It can be used for any type of knitting, and an additional advantage of the threads is their ability to fluff up only after the first wash. |
Lotus yarns | Threads with 90% angora and 10% nylon added, characterized by high strength and durability. Recommended for knitting. |
To create a hat, it is recommended to take 3 skeins (50g/350m) of angora yarn (for example, Cariaggi or Lotus yarns).
You can also use mink down threads of the same length per 100 g of down, as well as:
- knitting needles No. 3.5–4.5 (circular, stocking);
- tapestry needle;
- markers;
- 30 g of additional thread, 2000 m/100 g long (for example, consisting of 95% merino and 5% elastane). You will need it when creating a double product.
Taking measurements and calculations
Before you start knitting, you also need to make preliminary calculations and take measurements, measuring the head circumference and the depth of the fit.

Namely:
- To determine the circumference, the measuring tape must be placed slightly above the eyebrow line.
- The depth of the product is calculated using the formula: the distance from the bridge of the nose to the base of the back of the head/2. If you want to knit a Beanie hat, you need to add 5 cm to the resulting value.
- To determine the number of loops of the product, you need to knit a sample approximately 8-10 cm long, and then calculate the loops made 1 cm in height and width. The cast-on row is calculated in a similar way.
Knitting patterns
Angora hats for women can be knitted with a satin stitch and decorated with a variety of patterns.
Simple satin stitch hat
To create a single-layer product, you will need to take circular and stocking needles No. 3.5 and a thread with a thickness of 500 m/100. The knitting density will be 18 sts x 22 rows = 10x10 cm.

According to the work scheme it is required:
- Using short circular needles, cast on 96 stitches, close the ring and knit a section 24 cm high in stockinette stitch.
- Transfer all the loops to double-pointed needles and continue knitting, simultaneously making decreases, for which every 10 loops should be knitted 2 instead of the front one.
- The decrease in subsequent rows should be one loop.
- Having reached a section of 8 loops, cut the thread, pull it in the opposite direction and tighten, fixing the end. You can hide it on the wrong side of the hat.
- Try on the resulting product, wash and steam it, and then try it on again.
- To decorate the hat, its bottom edge can be crocheted, and the headdress itself can be decorated with beads or embroidery.
Double layer hat
Angora hats for women are double-layered and suitable for severe frosts. The Beanie model, which retains heat well, can be knitted using 3 skeins of 850 m per 100 g of 80% rabbit down with the addition of polyamide (20%).

The work will also require
- auxiliary thread of a contrasting colour, 2000 m/100 g long (for example, consisting of 95% merino and 5% elastane);
- circular knitting needles No. 3.5-4 and a hook.
During the work process you need to:
- Using a crochet hook, cast on a chain of 105 loops from the auxiliary thread, and pull the loops of angora yarn through its links, stringing them onto circular knitting needles. After all the loops have been collected, they must be connected into a ring.
- Similarly, knit a 24 cm piece of fabric in two folds, and then, after one side of the product is ready, carefully unravel the first set of loops, stringing them onto the knitting needles.
- Knit the second layer of the hat using the same pattern, then turn the headdress inside out along the cast-on line, connect them to each other, placing one layer inside the other.
- Try on the received product, wash and iron it. If desired, you can decorate it with a bow, rhinestones or embroidery.
Pumpkin Hat
Angora hats for women, model "Pumpkin", 25 cm high with a loose fit, can be knitted from yarn of 60-80% mink or rabbit down with the addition of nylon or wool in 3 threads without additional.

You will also need:
- 3 skeins of yarn of any shade;
- circular and double pointed needles No. 4.5 and 5.
When working on a product, you need:
- Cast on 80 stitches on circular knitting needles No. 5, the exact number may depend on the desired size and differ by 4-8 stitches, but the final number must be a multiple of 4.
- Switch to knitting needles No. 4.5 and knit the 33 cm side with a 2*2 elastic pattern (the turn-up is 7-8 cm).
- When forming the crown, you need to make 3 rows:
![]() | ![]() |
- 1st – regular front loops and 2 together back loops;
- 2nd – with regular purl stitches and 2 together with the front side;
- 3rd – all loops 2 together knitwise.
- After there are 12-18 loops left in the row, the thread on the top needs to be pulled tight and its ends tucked in from the wrong side.
The resulting product needs to be washed, ironed and tried on. If desired, it can be decorated with a brooch or a bow.
Hat with a bow
Women's hat made of angora, decorated with a bow, is knitted with circular knitting needles No. 4.5. You need to use 2 skeins of yarn for work (for example, Plymouth Yam Angora, with 100% rabbit down content, 10g / 45m). Knitting density: 22 loops + 30 rows = 10 * 10 cm of stocking knitting with knitting needles No. 4.5.
Work on the product begins with casting on 100 loops on knitting needles and then knitting them with a 2*2 elastic (2 front loops + 2 back loops) over 8 rows. After this, you need to switch to stocking needles and knit a 24 cm piece of fabric.
The top of the product begins to form 5 1⁄2 cm from the typesetting edge, for which you need to take:
- 1st round – 90 loops, knitted in a circle according to the pattern – 8 front loops + 2 back loops.
- 2nd round – only front loops;
- 3rd round – 80 loops – repeat the knitting pattern in circles – 7 front loops + 2 back loops;
- 4th round – 70 loops – 6 front + 2 back, knitted in a circle.
Similarly, you need to continue working until there are only 10 loops left on the needles, then pull the thread through them, cut it off, and hide the ends on the wrong side. It is recommended to wash the finished model, iron it, try it on and temporarily put it aside.
To create a bow to decorate the product you will need:
- Cast on 22 stitches using circular knitting needles No. 4.5, knit with a 2*2 rib pattern into a 9 cm piece and close the stitches.
- Using knitting needles No. 4, cast on an additional 8 stitches and knit 1 cm of fabric in a circle using stocking stitch, then close the stitches again.
- Pull the resulting piece into a ring, attach it to the front side of the finished hat, secure with a thread from each edge, straighten and iron the finished bow.
Cap "Francisca"
The women's hat "Francisca" is knitted from light angora yarn using the "Spikelet" pattern.

It is recommended to take for work:
- 2 skeins of thread 112m/50g (for example, Classic Elite Lush with 50% down and 50% wool content).
- circular knitting needles No. 3.75 and 4.5;
- markers;
- an extra knitting needle for the pattern;
- needle.
Knitting density: 22 loops + 30 rows = 10*10 cm.

The work on the product is done in a circle, and the desired pattern is made only on one side, which requires:
- Cast on 112 stitches using 3.75 cm knitting needles, mark the beginning of the row with a marker and knit it according to the pattern: 2 purl stitches + 3 knit stitches + 2 purl stitches + 3 knit stitches + 1 purl stitch + 3 knit stitches (repeat 3 times) + 2 purl stitches + 3 knit stitches (repeat 18 times).
- You need to knit 10 rows according to the pattern (until the elastic reaches a height of 3 cm).
- Switch to 4.5 mm needles and knit another 29 stitches, then mark them with a marker and knit the rest of the row.
- Knit 8 more rows in stockinette stitch.
- Cast on an additional 108 stitches and knit 4 rows, then begin decreasing according to the pattern:

- 5th row - 19 front + 2 back (repeat 5 times to get 103 loops).
- 6th row – only front loops;
- 7th row – 3 front loops + 2 back loops (repeat until 85 loops remain);
- 8th row – only front loops;
- 9th row – 2 front + 2 back (repeat until there are 67 loops);
- 10th row – only front loops;
- 11th row – 1 front + 2 back – 49 loops;
- Row 12 – only knit stitches;
- Row 13 – 2 purl stitches, slip one + 2 knit stitches, pass them through the slipped stitch and repeat the pattern 3 times. Add 2 knit stitches and repeat until you have 23 stitches.
- Row 14: Knit 2 stitches, slip them, yarn over 1 knit stitch, slip 2 stitches and tie to the front side, then knit 2 knit stitches with a rightward tilt and add 2 purl stitches. Repeat the pattern until there are 11 stitches left.
- Using a needle, pull the thread through the remaining loops, secure it and hide the ends on the wrong side.
Takori hat
You can knit a Takori hat from angora with the addition of wool or mohair.

The process is circular, which allows the product to be made without seams and requires the use of:
- 1 skein of thread 500 m/100 g;
- circular needles No. 4;
- tapestry needle.
During the work process you need to:
- Cast on 90 stitches using 2-strand knitting needles, join them into a circle and knit a 30 cm elastic band using the 1*1 pattern (1 front + 1 back stitch).
- To form the top of the product, perform one row with a decrease: if there is 1 front loop, then replace it with 2 back loops, if there is 1 back loop, then knit one back loop + 2 front loops, which will allow you to make a transition to a 2*2 elastic band.
- Knit the next 2 rows according to the 2*2 pattern, and then decrease again by knitting 3 stitches together: if 1 knit stitch, knit 3 knit stitches together; if purl stitch, knit 1 purl stitch + 2 knit stitches.
- This decrease remains until the end of the row, which will allow you to return to the 1*1 elastic again. You will also need to use it when knitting the next 2 rows without decreases.
- When performing the last row, only loops knitted in pairs are used.
- When you have finished working, pass the thread inserted into the needle through them, then pull the top tightly, secure it with a knot and hide the ends on the wrong side.
- The resulting model needs to be washed, ironed and tried on. If desired, it can be additionally decorated with a brooch, embroidery or rhinestones.
Tips for Beginners
You can use any patterns taken from magazines or published on Internet sites to create angora hats.

Experienced craftsmen also advise beginners:
- Use circular knitting needles instead of straight ones, which will significantly reduce the load on the body and make the process easier.
They can be used to create items of any shape and size, and if you need to stop working, you just need to pull the tip of the knitting needles, which will protect the already collected rows of loops from possible unraveling.
When buying knitting needles, it is also recommended to pay attention to the presence of pointed ends, which will allow you to quickly grab the necessary loop, and the presence of a matte coating, which prevents the already cast-on row from slipping.

- If you need to soften the yarn on new circular knitting needles, use boiling water. It is recommended to place the tools in a container with hot water for 3-4 minutes, which will make the line softer and significantly facilitate the work process.
- Remember that the thickness of the knitting needles should correspond to the thickness of the yarn used. For narrow fabric, it is recommended to use smooth, glossy knitting needles, which will make the work easier, since the loops will slide easily, without the need for additional pushing.
For wide fabric, knitting needles with a matte finish are suitable. Do not use tools with rough edges that catch the thread.
- To make the process easier, it is better to use knitting needles that contrast in color with the yarn when knitting., which will allow you to clearly see the number of loops cast on.

When using dark-colored threads, you can additionally place a white towel on your feet, which will reduce the strain on your eyes and make the process of counting stitches easier.
- Use only high-quality yarn for work, made from natural rabbit down with the addition of wool, mohair or synthetic material.
The percentage of fluff may vary, but to create quality items, the yarn must contain at least 50%-70% angora. When using skeins created industrially, it is easiest to take the thread from their central part, which will prevent the yarn from tangling.
It is also recommended to use special thread holders to make the work easier.

- Before stopping work, be sure to finish knitting the row you started. or use markers to mark on the knitted fabric.
- Get a special notebook and write down all your calculations in it. – decrease/increase, number of stitches to cast on, as well as the yarn number and number of knitting needles used.
- Use a crochet hook to pick up slipped stitches. It can also be used to cover the last row of fabric or hide the ends of the thread.
- Make loops free, without tightening them, which will facilitate the subsequent knitting process.
- When making items from 2 pairs of parts that fit on a fishing line, it is recommended to knit them simultaneously., which will significantly facilitate and speed up the work process, and also protect against possible errors, since all decreases/additions will be made simultaneously.

Women's hats made of angora are beautiful, stylish and at the same time warm accessories, made on circular knitting needles of different sizes.
You can choose a suitable model in a magazine or on the Internet, and then start knitting yourself, focusing on the pattern and using only high-quality material made from natural rabbit down.
