Calculation of squares for sewing

The bonbon rug can have different sizes depending on its purpose. For example, when sewing a children's product, the standard size of the squares should be 6x6 cm, for adults - 11x11 cm. If desired, these parameters can be changed to a larger size to speed up the work.

The calculation must be carried out using the lower squares.

The principle of calculating squares for sewing a 30x30 cm fabric:

If 1 square in finished form will reach 10x10 cm, and the sewn product 30x30 cm, then each of the sides must be divided by 10. As a result, the required number of squares will be obtained in the amount of 3 pieces both in length and width. In total, there should be only 9 squares.
When cutting out the bottom square, you need to add 2 cm for allowances to the parameters in the finished form. The result is 12x12 cm.
To calculate the top square, you need to add 2 cm (for allowances) to 10 cm (the parameter of the bottom square), as well as 4 or 6 cm for folds. As a result, the minimum size of the top piece should be 16x16 cm. If you make the allowance for folds large, the rug will be more lush and high.

Features of calculating squares for sewing fabric 160x80 cm:

If the finished bottom square is 13x13 cm, then the width and length must be divided by 13.
When dividing 80 by 13, it is recommended to round the result to 6. As a result, the width should be 6 squares. When dividing 160 by 13, the quotient should be rounded to 12. As a result, the length should be 12 squares.
To find out the total number of squares, you need 12x6. The result is 72.
When cutting, you need to add 2 cm for allowances to the value of the bottom square. As a result, the size of the bottom square should be 15x15 cm.
To the size of the top square you should add 4-6 cm for folds, as well as 2 cm for allowances.

Sewing techniques

Both experienced and novice craftsmen can sew a bonbon rug. If necessary, you can make a pattern with a diagram for the correct placement and connection of the elements of the product.

There are 2 techniques for sewing a rug, the results of which can be used to obtain different fabrics. In the first case, the squares need to be tightly stuffed so that they become more elastic and convex. If you adhere to the second technique, the rug will be flatter and softer.

You can sew a bonbon rug in the following way:

Place the lower and upper squares in separate piles. Then mark the center on each side of the square.
Make a small cut along the indicated marks using scissors 3 mm long.
Then make a cut in the middle of the lower squares. The length of the cut should be about 3 cm.
Connect the upper and lower squares to each other, matching their corners. Secure these sections with pins.
To make folds, pin the centers of the squares and make opposite, consecutive stripes on each side or directed in different directions.
Sew the prepared squares along the perimeter. The stitches should be 8 mm long.
Then arrange the prepared squares according to the pattern and join them together using vertical or horizontal lines. In this case, fold the blanks together, joining their centers. Secure the joined sections with pins.
Place a 1 cm long seam along the edge. Then iron the seams.
The created strips of squares are joined to each other. For these purposes, fold the blanks with the front side inward, connecting the line of joining the squares with needles or pins. Make a 1 cm line along the edges. Then iron the seams.
Combine the back wall of the product with the insulation and sew with straight, diagonal or cross-shaped stripes.

To create straight stripes, fold the material in half and then iron the fold. Then fold the edge of one side to the fold and iron. Perform similar actions on each side of the material.
Then apply the fabric to the insulation and pin the workpiece in each square and along the edge using needles. Then sew along the selected folds, starting from the middle.
To create diagonal stripes, place one edge of the fabric against the other so that the right side is inside and a diagonal is created. Iron the resulting fold.
Then unfold the material so that you can fold the corner to the ironed strip. Iron the resulting line.
Next, connect and iron the 2 folds. Then fold the corner to the fold and iron again. Perform similar actions on each side of the material.
When the back wall is stitched, cut off the insulation that is sticking out on each side.
Join the front and back walls of the product with each other so that the front parts are inside. To do this, combine all the cuts with needles.
The line should go along the perimeter. The seam length should be 1 cm. On one side of the fabric, leave a small opening 20 cm long so that the product can be turned inside out.
Then stuff the squares tightly with holofiber and sew up the holes in the center by hand.
Trim the corners on each edge and turn the piece inside out.
Then straighten each corner and sew up the hole using a blind stitch.

You can sew a bonbon rug in a different way so that the product turns out flat and more beautiful.

Sewing technique:

Place the top and bottom squares in separate piles. Mark the center on each side with a ruler and pencil. Then make a small 3 mm long cut in this area.
When placing the lower and upper squares on top of each other, join their middles and corners using needles.
Then, in each corner, make folds, stitching the workpieces along the edge with an 8 mm seam.
On one side of each square blank, leave a small hole 4 cm long so that you can insert the filler. The holes in the squares of the 1st row should be on the left side, in the rest - on the right side. In this case, it is necessary to assemble the square blanks using strips vertically.
Place the squares according to the pattern and combine them into a vertical strip. For these purposes, fold the blanks sequentially so that the front sides are inside, and the corners and centers are joined to each other.
Make a 1 cm seam along the perimeter. Similarly, make all vertical lines. Then iron all seams.
Combine 1 and 2 strips of squares with each other. For this purpose, fold the blanks with the right side inward, joining the line of connection of the squares and the cuts. Stitch along the edge. Then iron the seam.
Then stuff 2 strips with filler. Sew the holes.
Then start sewing the 3rd strip. In this case, fold the 2nd and 3rd strips with the right sides together, matching the squares' connection line and the cuts. After stitching the workpiece along the perimeter, iron the seams.
Fill strip 3 with holofiber and sew up all the holes.
Iron straight or diagonal stripes on the back wall of the future rug. Then apply insulation to the fabric, pinning 2 materials with needles. Moving from the middle to the edges, stitch the workpiece along the stripes.
Combine the back and front walls with each other, joining and pinning the cuts.
Place a 1 cm seam around the perimeter, leaving a 25 cm long opening so that the product can be turned inside out.
After stitching, turn the fabric inside out and hand-stitch the opening. Finally, iron the product well so that it becomes flat.

A bonbon rug can be used as a decoration for a living room, bedroom or children's room. Everything will depend on the textured shade of the selected material. This technique is simple, so you can sew decorative pillows, covers for armchairs and chairs, as well as a blanket on its basis.
