Body art is one of the branches of avant-garde art, where the object is the human body, and the plot or content is expressed in drawings, poses, and movement.

Although body art also includes tattoos, scarification, piercing and other body modifications, the most common and closest to art direction is body painting (or body painting). This type of performance can be seen most often on the bodies of girls.

Paints and painting tools

As in other artistic directions, bodypainting has its own nuances associated with materials and tools for drawing.

First of all, this concerns safety and comfort when working with a model, since human skin is a rather sensitive canvas. Moreover, drawings can be left not only on the body, but also on the face.

How to choose paints for body art

The paints used for body art must be hypoallergenic and non-toxic. After washing them off, there should be no tint left on the skin (when the dye “eats” into the skin and leaves a noticeable mark), or a feeling of dryness and tightness.

You also need to consider the surface area on which the drawing is placed - for the back or hips, you can take large brushes, for the hands and face, you need the thinnest ones.

Almost any face paint diluted with water is suitable for use in an airbrush. But it is easier to choose those materials that have a special mark.

In addition, you can use sponges, make-up brushes and nail art brushes to paint on your body. Another interesting tool is the artist's palms and fingers. This method of painting will add an element of performance to body art.

What to look for when choosing paints

Not all cities and art stores offer face paints, let alone theatrical makeup, from well-known, trusted manufacturers.

If you are choosing between regular dyes labeled as face painting, it is important to pay attention to some nuances:

the composition of the paint must be indicated not only in the language of the country of manufacture, but also in the language of the country in which the face painting is sold;
Children's paints must contain a mark indicating the age from which the use of this material is permitted;
The seller is obliged to provide all certificates confirming the safety of the products.

Water-based dyes may contain not only water and food dyes, but also some other additives (glycerin, sodium benzene, stearyl alcohol, petroleum jelly or paraffin). If the person using face painting on their body does not have an individual intolerance to one of these components, there is no need to worry about allergic reactions.

What paints should not be used for body art

Step by step process of body painting:

Before starting work, it is better to moisturize the body with a non-greasy cream or body milk to reduce the risk of dryness from the paints and to ensure an even coverage.
In some cases, you can use foundation as a "canvas primer." Paints will lay on prepared skin more evenly and brightly, and moles, veins, and tattoos will not interfere with the composition of the drawing on the body.
The first step is to make a sketch on the skin (it is better to use special body art chalk for this). It can be quite detailed if the art has a lot of detail, or it can be schematic.
An airbrush is suitable for painting large areas of skin. It fills the background quickly and evenly.
The contours and details are drawn with brushes of different thickness. It is better to adjust the paint thickness on the spot, but each new layer is necessarily applied after the previous one has dried.
Then volumes and shadows are added to the drawing. On the human body, using paints, you can draw a completely new texture, shape - the easiest way to do this is with an airbrush.
The smallest details, highlights and clarifying contours are applied last.

The skin is carefully prepared – scrubbed, steamed, moisturized with coconut or any other cosmetic oil.
A stencil is applied to the selected area. It is better to choose those stencils that can be glued to the skin - this will guarantee that the drawing will not be damaged if the base shifts or flies off.
The mehndi paint is applied according to the cut out elements, carefully but in a thick layer. You can use special tubes with henna or an ordinary brush.
The paint should be warmed up to body temperature. To do this, hold the tube or jar in your hands for about a minute.
The henna dries in 40 to 60 minutes. The dried paint should crack and start to come off the skin itself, its color becomes more saturated.
To improve the result, while the paint dries, you can wrap the skin area with cling film.
The remains of dried henna are washed off with warm water.
The finished design is carefully blotted with a paper towel, then moisturizing oil is applied to the skin area.

Butterfly Face Art

Body art on girls is a complex art, and not everyone can draw large compositions right away. Beginning artists usually try their hand at children's face painting or simple face art.

One of the basic concepts in face art is a butterfly. Symmetry and the ability to fantasize about the shape and decorations of this creature helps beginning artists feel the possibilities of face painting and find their own style.

Step by step tutorial on how to draw a butterfly on your face:

First, you need to identify the compositional centers on the face. The main points are in the center between the eyebrows, two points above the eyebrows on the forehead (at the hairline), two points on the temples, near the outer corners of the eyes, on the cheeks, and one on the chin.
Any composition should be built in the direction of these points. Compositional lines on the face should intersect at an angle of approximately 45°.
The drawing begins with painting the eyelid if necessary and marking the wings, their background painting. It is more convenient to do this with a special sponge for face painting, picking up paint on its convex part.
It is best to paint the eyelid with soft pearlescent paints, compositionally light shades on the eyes look better. The background part can be decorated with a rainbow palette (split cake) for face painting - this will create smooth color transitions.

The wings themselves should not be too big and touch the hairline. It is better to make the upper wing slightly larger than the lower one.
While the surface of the wings is wet, you can apply glitter to them.
After marking the background of the wings with a sponge, you can begin the contour tracing. This is done with a fairly thin, but long-napped brush.
The outline lines should also be directed towards the composition points. This will make the drawing more harmonious. By adjusting the pressure on the brush and its direction, you can draw lines that vary in thickness.
The outline of the wings can have different shapes. Like a real butterfly or a fantasy shape, the main thing is to bring all the lines either to each other or to nothing.
The butterfly should be more or less symmetrical in lines and shape of wings. The color scheme can be both symmetrical and complementary.
The final step is to add small details such as dots, small curls, and whiskers in the center of the forehead.

When working with a model, it is important to hold the brush correctly - using the little finger of the working hand to support the lines will help make them more confident, holding the model's head with the other hand will give the artist additional support and limit unnecessary movement (this is especially important for children).
