Crochet collars have been in fashion since 1940. An accessory crocheted with your own hands emphasizes individuality and femininity. To learn how to knit such items, you need to know what threads and hooks to use, as well as look at several simple patterns and read the descriptions for them.
Hooks and threads for knitting collars
Collars are knitted from thin and strong threads. Usually, 1 adult collar requires about 50 g of yarn (1–1.5 skeins).
The composition of the threads may vary. Cotton yarn is most often used. To give the product some specific characteristics, experienced craftsmen buy skeins with the addition of other fibers and threads. The table describes the most popular options.
Yarn composition | What products is it suitable for? |
Mercerized cotton | Children's collars |
Cotton 70% and 30% viscose | Products for everyday wear and frequent washing. |
80% cotton and 20% silk | Collars for blouses and dresses. |
Cotton thread with lurex | For festive collars. |
To make the knitting dense, you need to use a hook that is slightly thicker than the thread. For ordinary cotton yarn, tool No. 1 or No. 2 will do. Since the thread is very thin, it is important that it slides well, so it is not recommended to use cheap plastic hooks. It is better to give preference to metal tools.
Symbols and abbreviations on knitting patterns
Crochet collars are knitted according to text descriptions and graphic schemes. The latter option is a schematic drawing, where each crochet maneuver is designated by some symbol. To learn how to read simple schemes, you need to remember the symbols that are most common.
Symbol | Transcript |
• | Air loop |
∩ | Connecting column |
┼ | Column with 1 yarn over |
╪ | Column with 2 yarns |
│ | Single crochet |
V | 2 columns with a common base (number of lines = number of columns) |
◯ | Ring of air loops (the number of loops is indicated in the center) |
︵ | Chain of air loops (the number of loops is indicated below) |
▼ | Half double crochet |
▽ | Simple half-column |
◊ | Columns with a common top and base |
There are also other designations, they can be found in more complex schemes. Usually, the authors write short explanations for each symbol on the drawing.
Simple lace collar crochet. Patterns with detailed description
The collar can be crocheted (the diagram and description are presented further in the article) lacy, following a simple pattern. For work you will need thin cotton threads and hook No. 1.
Option 1:
- Cast on a chain of 37 cm long air loops.
- Knit 3 rows of single crochet stitches.
- 5 chain starts with 6 double crochets. Next you need to knit a chain of 4 air loops. At the bottom, skip 4 loops and knit 1 double crochet on 5.
- Cast on a chain of 3 air loops and knit 1 double crochet, without skipping the loops below. Make a chain of 4 air loops.
- Knit row 5 repeating points 3 through 4.
- Rows 6 and 7 are knitted in the same way, but the number of double crochets (where there were 6) should decrease by 2 with each rise, and the columns between which there are 3 air loops, on the contrary, should increase by 1 on each side. Chains of air loops should be increased by 2 loops.
- By row 8, a triangle pattern will be visible on the collar. This row should be started with a chain stitch of 8 loops. Knit 3 double crochets, a chain of 6 loops, 2 double crochets. Then another 1 chain of 6 loops and 3 double crochets. Repeat until the end of the row.
- The next row is an alternation of chains of 8 air loops and columns with yarns. The resulting petals need to be tied with columns.
The beginning of each new row forms loops. On the other side of the collar, you can sew on large pearl beads and use them as buttons.
Option 2:
- Cast on a chain of 37 cm long air loops.
- Knit 3 rows with double crochets.
- The next row should be knitted with arches of 6 air loops, securing them through 4 loops from below with a single crochet. Knit to the end of the row.
- Knit all the loops of the air loops with double crochets.
- Knit the following rows, repeating points 3 and 4. The arches should be arranged in a checkerboard pattern.
- On the 7th row, you need to knit 3 arches, tie each 4th arch from below with 5 columns with 2 yarns. Repeat until the end of the chain.
- The next row is knitted with 2 arches of 8 air loops. In places where the columns were knitted, you need to knit a column with a yarn over between them, making an arch of 3 air loops between them. Knit to the end of the row.
You should get a lace pattern with petals along the edges. Knit the inner part of the neck with arches just like row 4. Attach the clasp.
Below is a knitting pattern for another simple and effective lace collar:
Simple openwork collar crocheted from thin threads for beginners
The collar can be crocheted (the diagram and description are presented later in the article) in an openwork pattern, with a large number of holes, and the pattern will look stylish and modern.
For work you will need “Iris” threads and hook No. 1.25.
How to knit:
- Cast on a chain of 58 cm long air loops. It is important that the number of loops in the chain is divisible by 3 and 1 more loop should be added for symmetry.
- Knit 3 chain stitches for lifting. Skip 2 stitches from the bottom and knit a chain of 2 stitches. Knit a column with 2 yarn overs and a chain of 2 chain stitches, skipping 2 stitches from the bottom. Knit to the end of the chain.
- The next row begins with a double crochet. Then follows a chain stitch of 4 loops. Through the chain stitch in the previous row, you need to knit 4 double crochets, 2 in each loop. Again, knit an arch of 4 loops. Repeat until the end of the row.
- Knit 3 chain stitches for lifting and 1 column with 2 yarns out of the same loop. Knit an arch of 2 chain stitches and connect to the previous row by knitting a column without a yarn in the middle, between the columns. Knit another 1 chain of 2 loops. Skip 3 loops from the bottom and knit 2 columns with 2 yarns, bringing out from one point. Again 2 chain stitches and 2 columns with 2 yarns. Repeat to the end of the row.
- Alternate chains (items 3 and 4) to the end. There should be 7 rows in total.
This collar is suitable for decorating everyday dresses. All that remains is to sew on a fastener and steam the product.
Here is another version of a fairly simple openwork collar for beginners with a “pineapple” pattern:
Step-by-step knitting of collars for different clothes
A crochet collar (the pattern and description for each type of clothing are described in detail further in the article) is knitted not only for everyday outfits. An openwork accessory can decorate a girl's school uniform, add elegance to an evening dress or dilute the monotony of an office shirt with large flowers. The color of the threads can be any. The main thing is that it harmonizes with the main shade of the clothes.
For school uniform
Such a collar should be beautiful, but not too flashy. Large flowers or non-standard shapes are not suitable for decoration. It is better to give preference to a round or triangular collar.
The traditional color of collars is white. For work you will need "Iris" threads and hook No. 1.5.
How to knit a round collar:
- Cast on a chain of 40 cm long air loops.
- Knit 3 rows with double crochet stitches.
- The next 6 rows are knitted with a grid of arches. The first arches consist of 6 air loops. In each new row, you need to add 2 loops.
- The last row is knitted through the arches. First 2 columns with 2 yarns, then 3 columns with 3 yarns and again 2 columns with 2 yarns. Knit each arch in this way.
Sew the fastener to the top of the collar. It is better to give preference to a loop and a pearl-colored bead. This option will give the collar a more festive look.
Exquisite stand for a blouse, jacket
A crochet collar (the diagram and description are described further in the article) is knitted not only for clothing decoration. For example, a high stand will help hide some minor defects on the skin of the neck, such as scars, spots, etc.
A simple but elegant stand can be knitted to a light blouse or even a sweater. In the latter version, the threads and hook should be thicker than usual.
How to knit:
- For a tighter fit of the collar to the skin, you need to measure the circumference of the neck and add 1.5 cm. This will be the length of the product. In this version, knitting begins on the side.
- You need to make a chain of air loops 7 cm long.
- You need to knit, alternating rows with columns with 1 yarn over, and simple columns, without yarn overs. Knit until the ribbon reaches the desired length.
- Determine the top and bottom of the collar. At the bottom, make a 2-row edging with single crochet stitches.
- The next row starts with 4 columns with 3 yarns, 4 chain stitches in an arch, again 4 columns with 3 yarns. Alternate until the end of the chain.
- The remaining 6 rows must be knitted in the same way, placing the columns in a checkerboard pattern.
- Tie the edges of the product in 2 rows with single crochets.
Attach the fastener. For warm collar options (on a sweater), it is better to knit the buttonholes in advance.
A variant of the rack made using the transverse technique:
The width of the collar is adjusted by the number of single crochet stitches that make up the dense part of the product (in the diagram - 12).
Stylish zigzags in openwork technique for a dress
This collar will suit an autumn or spring dress with a high neck. For work you will need a hook No. 1 and thin cotton threads. To give the collar a festive look, you can use yarn with lurex.
How to knit:
- Cast on a chain of 50 cm long air loops.
- Knit a row of double crochet stitches.
- The next row begins with 4 double crochets. 1 chain stitch, skip 3 stitches from the bottom and knit a double crochet with a tilt to the right. Make an arch of 3 chain stitches. Knit a double crochet with a tilt to the left. Knit 4 double crochets again. Repeat to the end of the chain.
- Row 3 begins with 3 chain stitches for lifting. 3 double crochets, 1 chain stitch and 3 double crochets tilted to the right. Arch of 3 chain stitches, 3 double crochets tilted to the left. 4 double crochets.
- Alternate rows 2 and 3 (items 3 and 4). You need to knit 10 rows in total.
Finally, the work needs to be steamed well, straightening the corners of the zigzags so that they lie flat, without overlapping each other. It is best to wear such a collar after starching it, otherwise it will wrinkle and lose its shape.
Irish lace
This knitting style is considered difficult because all the elements for the collar need to be knitted separately, and then connected together into a single composition. Thin "Iris" threads are suitable for work. The color of the threads for each element can be different.
You can connect the parts with the same threads or choose spool threads. The crochet hook should be no thicker than No. 1.5, and for fastening the elements - No. 1.
What details fit the Irish lace style:
- leaves;
- flowers;
- bunches of grapes;
- trefoils;
- circles;
- voluminous rose buds.
Elements can be connected using a fillet or irregular mesh, as well as honeycombs.
Rapport White Lily
One of the most popular patterns for round collars is considered to be the "white lily". The pattern rapport consists of 12 loops.
How to knit:
- Knit 1 chain with columns with 1 yarn over.
- Start the next row with 3 double crochet stitches. Skip 3 stitches at the bottom and work 3 chain stitches. Join with the bottom row with a single crochet stitch. Skip 1 stitch at the bottom, work an arch of 3 chain stitches and secure with a single crochet stitch. Work 3 chain stitches. Repeat to the end of the row.
- In the 3rd chain, knit 5 columns with 1 yarn over, 4 air loops. Connect the arch with the previous row, knitting a simple column in the middle of the lower arch. Knit 4 more air loops. Knit to the end of the chain.
- An arch of 3 chain stitches, 3 double crochets and tilts to the left. 1 chain stitch, 3 double crochets and tilts to the right. Alternate 2 chain stitches and 1 double crochet, knitting the stitches through the arches.
- Alternate 1 chain stitch and 3 double crochets with joined tops and bases.
Below are some more options for patterns on the theme "White Lily":
Knit with white Iris threads or thin cotton yarn. It is recommended to use hook No. 1.25. The width of the collar will be about 6 cm. To make the product wider, the rapport can be repeated starting from the 2nd row.
Cardigan collar
The collar for the cardigan can be with a wide or narrow neck. The description below shows the 2nd option. The threads for work should be approximately the same thickness as those from which the product is knitted.
How to knit:
- Cast on a chain of 17 chain stitches. Add 3 extra stitches to move to the next row.
- Turn the chain over and knit 4 double crochets, 3 half double crochets and 10 single crochets. Then turn the piece over again and knit in reverse order. You should get an elastic band. You need to knit a ribbon 40 cm long.
- Next, knit the yoke. The ribbon is tied with single crochet stitches from below.
- The next row consists of double crochets.
- Another chain starts with 3 single crochets alternating through a 3-stitch air space.
- The chain from the top starts with an arch of 4 chain stitches. 3 columns with 1 yarn over and tilted to the left, 2 chain stitches, 3 columns with 1 yarn over and tilted to the right. Repeat to the end of the chain.
- The next 2 rows are knitted in the same way, but the number of columns with yarns, as well as loops in the arches, increases by 2.
- The last row consists of alternating 3 columns with 2 yarns and 1 air loop.
The rounded edges can be decorated with "cones".
Below is a knitting option for a cardigan collar with a cape neckline.
Big flowers
This collar is made up of 6 large floral motifs. The elements are connected to each other by an irregular grid.
For work you will need polyester black and beige threads with the addition of lurex, as well as hook No. 3.
How to knit flowers:
- Using black thread, make a chain of 8 air loops and close into a ring.
- Knit a row, alternating columns with 2 yarn overs and 1 air loop.
- Knit the next chain with single crochet stitches.
- Change the thread to beige. After every 3 loops, knit arches of 12 air loops. You should get 5 petals.
- Tie all the arches with columns in the following order: single crochet, 3 double crochets, 9 triple crochets. Then 3 double crochets, single crochet.
- Change the thread to black and tie each petal with double crochet stitches.

When all 6 flowers are ready, they need to be tied with arches in 3 rows, using beige threads. Row 4 is the connecting one. At the top, where the collar neck will be, you should decrease the loops in the arches so that the line is even. The neck and the bottom edge of the product need to be tied with a "crayfish step".
Double collar
A double collar is a collar with repeating patterns, where one lies on top of the other in an overlapping manner.
Usually such accessories are considered festive, they are worn over dresses and blouses. You can knit such a collar from cotton thread, the yarn "Iris" and hook No. 1.25 will do.
How to knit:
- Cast on a chain of 40 cm long air loops.
- Knit the chain from 2 sides with arches of 6 air loops.
- Start knitting the upper pattern with 3 chain stitches. Knit 2 double crochets through the middle of the lower arch, 1 chain stitch, 2 double crochets. Make an arch of 3 chain stitches and connect it to the lower arch with a single crochet. Knit 3 more chain stitches. Repeat all the steps from the beginning, to the end of the chain.
- Knit the next 3 rows in the same way.
- The semicircular pattern is knitted over every 2 arches. First, 9 double crochets are knitted.
- The next row consists of alternating 2 columns with 3 yarns and 3 air loops.
- The penultimate row consists of alternating 1 chain stitch and 3 columns with 3 yarns, coming out from 1 point (the middle of the lower arch).
- Tie the edges of the collar with arches of 4 air loops.
The lower part of the collar should be secured on the 5th and 6th rows from the edge. The pattern is knitted according to points 3 through 8.
How to Decorate Knitted Collars
The most popular way to decorate a collar is with beads. Pearl, gold and black beads are suitable for white items. They can be sewn onto the center of large flowers or placed inside repeating patterns. Such decorations are also often used as a clasp.
Small beads and seed beads look best on lace collars. You can use beads to decorate monograms in Irish lace. Metallic colors and pale pink are suitable for white collars.
The necklines can be decorated with narrow satin ribbons. To do this, you need to knit several thin straps at the very beginning, and when the product is ready, insert the ribbon. The edges of the ribbons are carefully sewn, tied with a bow or left hanging. In the latter version, the ribbons are used as ties.
Crochet collars from thin yarn are not easy to knit. Sometimes even experienced craftsmen unravel the work 2-3 times during knitting, so beginners should not despair if the product does not turn out right away. The main thing is to carefully examine the patterns and follow the descriptions.
