Several years ago, flower arrangements in hat boxes became very popular and still arouse interest. This type of flower arrangement looks very beautiful. There are several nuances that indicate its advantage over traditional bouquets.
The advantage of flowers in a box over a regular bouquet
Flowers in a hat box stand out from ordinary bouquets.
Several characteristic aspects can be identified.
- Originality. The arrangement of flowers in a box can be completely unique and unusual. It depends on the packaging itself, its design and the selection of flora. The composition can consist of only mono-flowers, as well as of different shades and types.

- Aesthetics and beauty. Flowers in a box look harmonious, neat and presentable. They can be an independent worthy gift for any celebration not only for women, but also for men.
- Practicality. Flowers that are correctly placed in a box do not require additional care in the form of trimming stems and replacing water, since they are pre-prepared when composing the composition. It, in turn, retains freshness and aesthetic appearance much longer.
- Convenience. Flowers in a box can be placed on any surface. Unlike bouquets in a vase, they are more stable.
- Mobility. A bouquet in a hat box can be moved and rearranged many times without causing any damage or harm to the flowers. If the box has handles, the flower arrangement can be easily and comfortably carried in your hands.
- Versatility. A flower arrangement packed in a box can be a gift in itself. In addition, it can serve as a supplement to some other present.
Necessary materials and tools
Today, many floristic boutiques and workshops offer a wide range of flower arrangements in boxes of different shapes and sizes. Their cost is almost the same as traditional bouquets. However, knowing the subtleties and some rules of floristry, you can easily assemble flowers in a hat box yourself.
To do this you will need:
- Flowers. They are the dominant element in the work and can be of one or several types and shades.
- Box. Can be of any shape, size and color. It depends on what celebration the bouquet is being prepared for and who it is intended for.
- Floristic sponges (oases). There can be several of them so that they are tightly and stably placed in the flower box.
- A container with water for filling the floral foam with moisture.
- Chrysal is a product added to the water for soaking the oasis. It helps to extend the life of cut flowers and keep them fresh longer.
- Waterproof film (polyethylene). The material is necessary for packing a humid oasis for placing flowers and protecting the box from getting wet.
- Polyethylene bags. These are necessary when the box does not contain a floral foam. The stems of the flowers are packed in a bag with water, securely fastened to prevent leakage, and then simply placed in a small-diameter box.

- Nippers for cutting stems.
- Scissors for cutting film and decorative elements (ribbons and paper).
- A sharp knife (stationery). Necessary for forming the required size of the floral foam (oasis).
- Wide tape. It is used to secure the waterproof film to the oasis.
- Decorative ribbons to decorate the box (if needed).
In addition to the above materials and tools, various decorative elements and items for decoration can be used to decorate flowers in a box. However, it should be remembered that the floral composition itself is a beautiful decorative element. Therefore, you should not "load" it with unnecessary details.
How to choose the right box
Flowers placed in a box look very beautiful. However, the name "hat" does not mean that hats were stored in the box. It is rather a tribute to fashion and old traditions that came to the big world from old England.

They date back to the distant past, when a famous writer presented his beloved with flowers in a lady's hat box on the day of their first meeting. The public present appreciated the attention shown.
There is an opinion that it was the English who were the first to pack flowers in round hat boxes. Later, similar containers began to be produced in Europe and America specifically for flower shops.
Over time, manufacturers moved away from the strict round shape. Square, oval, triangular and other fancy shapes of packaging appeared. However, they were firmly labeled as "hat" boxes.
In order to choose the right box for a flower arrangement, you need to know who it will be intended for and what occasion it is for. In addition, you should consider what flowers will be placed in this package.
Here are some tips for choosing a flower box:
- Material: The box should be made of thick cardboard.
- Quality. The box must be strong and well glued. This is necessary so that it can withstand the weight of the entire composition.
- Size. It must correspond to the selected number of colors that will be placed in it.
- Color. The shade of the packaging should not be dissonant with the flower arrangement. Everything should be harmonious: color, shape and size.
- Purpose. The choice of color and shape of the box should correspond to the occasion or the gender and age of the person to whom the bouquet is intended.

In addition, you need to have the necessary materials and tools for work.
Preparatory stage
To create a beautiful flower arrangement in a hat box, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work with the floristic material and the packaging itself.
This:
- Selecting a box and flowers. At this stage, it is important to determine what flowers will be used in the composition, as well as to select a box of the appropriate size, shape and color.
- Preparing the floral foam. This stage involves forming an oasis to the size of the box (cutting, using several sponges) and filling it with moisture.
To do this, the material should be placed in a container with water and Chrysal dissolved in it, which will ensure a longer life for cut flowers. The sponge itself will fill with moisture in 20-30 minutes and sink to the bottom of the container. It is ready for use.

- Packing the oasis in waterproof film and fixing it in a box. At this stage, the floral foam, saturated with moisture and cut to the size of the container, is wrapped in polyethylene, which is secured with tape. Only the upper part of the floral foam remains free of film, into which the stems of the flowers selected for the composition will be inserted.
- Preparing cut flowers. This stage involves choosing the length and cutting the stems of plants, freeing them from leaves, side shoots and branches. Bush flowers are an exception in this case.

It should be noted that, in addition to Chrysal, you can use other means to extend the life of cut flowers:
- Bona Forte;
- FloraLife;
- Etisso;
- "Living Bouquet" and others.
Once the preparatory work is completed, you can begin to design the composition.
Creating a composition, how to pack flowers in a hat box
Flowers in a hat box are not always formed in a composition using a floral foam. Some plants (tulips, hyacinths) have quite soft stems, and it is advisable to pack them in a container with water, which is then placed in the box.

Some florists use plastic bags, fill them with liquid, insert the flowers collected in a bouquet and tie them tightly with florist tape (adhesive tape) or scotch tape. After that, everything is placed in a box.
In order for flowers to look beautiful in a composition, they are collected into a bouquet using a fan technique., placing each stem on the previous one at a slight angle and gradually turning the work in your hands. In this case, the bouquet will look neat, and after trimming the stems, it will fit quite stably in the selected packaging.
After the required number of flowers have been collected, they should be tied with twine and cut to the desired length. It should be proportionate to the height of the intended composition and look good in the box.
Next, the prepared bouquet should be placed with its stems in a plastic bag with water, where a product for extending the life of cut flowers has been added. After that, everything should be securely fastened with tape or tape to prevent liquid leakage. You can pre-glue the inside of the box with waterproof film. This will additionally protect the box from getting wet.

- polyethylene;

- Trim the edges of the film from the top of the oasis.
- Place the prepared sponge in the box. It fits tightly and securely in it.

- Insert large white hydrangea flowers into the oasis.
- Place the Snow Flake rose branches into the sponge, gradually filling the box.
- Next, add lilac flowers of the Lullaby rose, sprigs of Agastache, and lavender-colored statice to the composition.

Secrets of florists
In order for flowers in a hat box to look harmonious and beautiful, you should listen to the advice of experienced florists.
Here are a few secrets you can take on board:
- If the hat box is tall, you can place a piece of foam plastic wrapped in tissue paper in the color of the box on its bottom.
- If the bouquet consists of flowers of different shades, it is better to choose a single-color box. It can echo the color of the plant that is the main (focal) one in the composition.
- When filling the box, it should be periodically rotated around the axis in order to see any shortcomings in the work, and to ensure that the composition does not turn out one-sided.

- When filling the sponge, you cannot take out the already installed plants and insert others in their place. In this case, the oasis will no longer hold the stems properly.
- Florist's foam is much easier to cut when wet.
- If one or more flowers fade and lose their presentable appearance, it is best to carefully remove them from the oasis. This will preserve the aesthetics of the composition.
Any flowers can be a pleasant present. A beautiful floral arrangement in a hat box will be a decoration for any holiday, a wonderful gift and a modern trendy decor.
