To ensure that a drawing of a chicken does not become the result of an irritated child scribbling on a sheet of paper, parents should be able to explain the stages of the image. The final work reflects not only the technique, but also the mood of the little artist. It is important for children to draw with a positive mindset.
How to draw a chicken step by step with a pencil
To arouse a child's interest in the image of a bird, parents should tell the following facts:
- It is the only bird that cannot fly, so its wings are much smaller than its body.
- Chickens are distinguished by their intelligence. They quickly distinguish individuals who treat the bird well or badly. Therefore, the position of the head and body next to another character can be different.
- Chickens have feelings. They take care of their offspring and are sad if something happens to them. The bird's emotions are reflected in the drawing.
- They are easy to distinguish from roosters. The latter have a larger and brighter comb, beard, more massive legs, spurs and large rounded back feathers, called pigtails.

Having made sure that the child is interested and understands the basic geometric shapes, as well as the characteristics of a chicken, start drawing:
- Basics. To do this, draw a circle in the center, occupying slightly less than half of the sheet, and the second one in the left corner. Its size is significantly smaller than the first, since it will serve as a basis not for the body, but for the head. From both its sides, two parallel lines are lowered to the large circle. This will be the neck.
At the bottom of the large circle, draw 2 triangles in the center, from them - 2 parallel lines of the same size, and from those - 2 horizontal ovals. These will be the paws. At the back of the large circle, overlapping, draw a leaf with the sharp part up. In height, it will reach the middle of the neck.

- Heads. On the small circle, mark the centers of the upper and left sides. At this distance, depict the comb. From the center on the left, draw a thin beak, the upper part of which is twice as big as the lower one. From the latter, add 2 small semicircles, forming a beard. An oval of approximately the same size in the direction of the comb, and inside it - a pupil with a glare.
- Corps. Along the parallel lines from the head, softer lines are drawn, enveloping the body. On the body near the neck, a wavy line is depicted, characteristic of feathers. In its upper half, a curved line is drawn, resembling an oval, pointed on the right, and having no side on top. This will result in a wing, inside which wavy lines are drawn, imitating feathers.
- Tail. In the area of the leaf, many long rounded feathers are drawn, and on them, half the size ones.
- Legs. To do this, closely duplicate the parallel lines from the triangles. Draw 3 spread fingers to the left, 1 to the right, and a sharp claw at the end of each. Then delete the auxiliary lines and smoothly outline all parts of the body.
Hen with chicks
A drawing of a chicken for children will become a little more complex and interesting if you depict it watching the chickens.
How to do it:
- Construct an image using the specified method. Only since the hen is watching the chicks, her head should be slightly tilted and her gaze directed downwards.
- Construct an image of a chicken. Since the chicken is drawn facing left, at least one chick is added on the same side. To do this, draw a circle where the head will be. In it, draw a small circle, drawing a "tail" to the right to indicate the corner of the eye.
On the left side of the head, slightly overlapping, outline a small beak. The chick's neck is not visible, so the circle for the body is drawn close to the head. Then smooth lines are drawn to make a body, with fluff at the back instead of a tail. The legs and wings are constructed like those of a chicken, only smaller. Auxiliary lines are deleted.

- Draw other chickens from different angles. Other chickens are drawn using the same principle. The only difference is the turn and tilt of the body. And to draw a chicken turned towards the viewer, 2 circles are drawn: 1 - larger for the body, 2 - on top of the first overlapping, and smaller in size.
In its center, draw a small rhombus, divided in half - this will be the beak. A little higher on the sides inside the circle, draw circles for the eyes. On the body, on the edges, in the form of small half-hearts, draw wings.
Add 2 rounded triangles to the bottom of the body, and paws under them so that the front and side fingers are slightly below the main plane. Between them, stretched skin. Fuzz is imitated all over the body. The final stage is removing auxiliary lines.

- Add background. The backyard of the house is usually depicted as such. To do this, draw a horizontal line just above the birds' paws to indicate planes. Shadows are added under the hen and chicks, and irregularities from the ground, grass, stones and grains are scattered across the entire lower plane. A fence and clouds in the sky can be added in the distant background.
- Paint over. The standard color of the chicken is brown with dark spots. It is used for plumage all over the body. Around the eye, comb and beard are painted red, making the convex parts a little lighter.
The beak and legs are light brown, darker towards the bottom. The same is true for the chickens. And their bodies are yellow. The stones, grains and fence are painted in discreet colours so that the main emphasis remains on the birds. The sky is pale blue. The drawing of a hen watching her chickens is ready.
With egg
To correctly depict a hen, follow this algorithm of actions.
How to draw a chicken with an egg | |
Action | Description |
Preparation of materials | You will need:
|
Building an image of a chicken with an egg and hay | Having placed the sheet horizontally, it is mentally divided in half. In the upper left half, a circle is drawn of such dimensions that there is space for the neck. An oval is drawn along the entire lower part, beveled towards the tail area. The two parts of the body are connected by a smooth line, forming the head, neck and body. Eyes are drawn in the ball, a beak is drawn to its left part, a beard is drawn under it, and a comb is drawn above it. A wing is depicted in the upper half of the body.
Draw hay under the chicken. The fluffier it is, the more beautiful the final result will be. Draw the visible part of the egg in the middle of the hay and the chicken's body. |
Detailing | On the egg, a small oval is used to mark the spot of the highlight. The hay is detailed so that it consists of many curved "needles" placed in different directions. Many wavy lines are drawn all over the chicken's body to imitate plumage. Individual short feathers are depicted on the tail. |
Coloring | If you are using paints instead of crayons for this step, you will need to wait for the paint to dry after each detail is painted. Since the chicken is facing left, it is best to have the light coming from the same direction.
This means that the right side will be darker. Brown is used for the chicken's plumage, and black is used in the wavy lines. The beak is painted beige. The area around the eye, the comb, and the beard are painted red. For the lighted side of the hay, use beige or ochre, for the dark side - brown. For the egg, mix orange with brown and white. Then paint it, leaving room for a highlight. |
If you want to depict a hen with her head to the right, follow the same algorithm, only in a mirror image, and the light will fall from the right side.
If a child wants to depict a chicken with an egg frontally, then:
- the head, neck and body will be located in the center;
- a beak in the form of a divided rhombus is depicted in the middle of a circle for the head, under the beak are earrings for the beard, and above it is a thin comb to the crown;
- the eyes are drawn at a large distance from each other, and then they are drawn with a rounded line to the beard and comb;
- the oval for the body does not need to be beveled, since the tail part will not be depicted;
- In front of the chicken, up to the neck area, draw the visible part of the egg.
The image is ready.
With kittens
A drawing of a chicken for children will become even more interesting if instead of eggs you depict kittens under the hen.
In order for the laying hen to correspond to the character of Lina Tomchi's poem, it is necessary:
- depict a hen in the hay;
- at the bottom of the body, draw 3 ovals on the left side if the chicken is depicted from the side, and on the right side if it is depicted frontally;
- draw 2 triangles on top of each oval for the ears and 1 in the center to indicate the nose;
- draw the kittens' faces, adding round eyes with pointed edges, whiskers, cheeks in the form of horizontal eights, chins and fluff in the ears;
- add breasts in the shape of wide hearts under the heads;
- draw paws on each side of it so that the head “lies” on them;
- use zigzags to indicate the direction of the wool;
- if there are spots, depict them too;
- remove auxiliary lines.

Next, the hen is painted using the method described above. The coloring of the kittens is not important, the main thing is to use natural shades. The nose is painted pink, the whiskers are white, and the pupils are black. In the eyes, the area for highlights is either left unpainted or made with a white pen or pencil.
You can depict a playful kitten next to the hen:
- drawing a circle, which later serves as the basis for the head:
- add an oval to it so that on the left it is larger and wider - this will be the body;
- step back a little from the left side of the oval and draw the hind leg of a sitting kitten;
- add the front legs, leaving space between them for the chest;
- from the center of the wide part of the oval draw a line for the tail and finish it;
- on the circle for the head, add a curved line that imitates the cheek of a slightly turned away kitten;
- draw a mustache with dots underneath it, and on it, eyes looking back and a nose;
- draw ears on the head, the visible part should be lower and turned away so that it looks like the kitten is moving one ear;
- remove basting lines;
- add eyebrows for facial expressions and color change areas.

The kitten can be dyed red.
The speckled hen from the fairy tale
A drawing of a chicken can depict the plot of the fairy tale "Ryaba the Hen", even if you do not depict the upset grandfather with the grandmother and the mouse. For children, it is enough to draw a hen with an egg.
How to do it:
- place the sheet horizontally;
- prepare a ruler, pencil, brushes, a jar of water and paints;
- in the upper half of the sheet, draw several lines slightly diagonally under the ruler, parallel to each other and bent closer to the right side to form the corner of the barn;
- draw a window on the left side;
- in the middle, construct an image of a hen located to the right;
- draw eyelashes on the eyes;
- depict the wing in the shape of a leaf with a curved tip;
- draw the tail pointing vertically upwards;
- its width should look like a continuation of the body;
- its shape is wavy, made up of four semicircles connected to each other, with a circle drawn under each of them;
- add lots of waves on the body, neck, wings to emphasize that the chicken is speckled;
- underneath it, draw hay made of twigs in a chaotic position;
- under the right wing add an egg with a highlight and lines emphasizing the glow;
- draw hay on the floor of the barn;
- background – dilute with household objects (shovel, ladder, bucket, etc.);
- Erase all unnecessary lines.
How to color:
- the glass in the window is blue;
- barn - dark brown with a lighter shade near the chicken or egg;
- wooden objects – the same color, metal ones – gray;
- hay - beige;
- egg - golden with white highlights;
- the red color indicates the shape of the end of the wing, the comb, the earrings and the area around the eye;
- yellow - beak, neck, upper part of the wing, circles and waves on the tail;
- brown - body, tail and waves on the wing, lightening in the egg area;
- black - pupils around the highlight area, ripples on the body, edges of hay and objects.
The fairy tale character is ready.
Black hen
The phrase "Ryaba Hen" is usually used to refer to a brown bird. In fact, it can also be black, since the word "Ryaba" means "motley", "speckled", "spotted".
How to draw a black chicken for a child, standing half-sideways, that is, almost full-face:
- Use a pencil to divide the sheet of paper in half vertically and horizontally;
- just above the intersection of the lines, draw a corner of the ruler - this will be the upper parts of the tail and neck;
- draw an oval to the last one;
- inside it, slightly higher than the center, depict an eye and the area around it;
- on the crown - a comb in such a way that it would cover the left half of the head;
- the beak also emphasizes a slight turn towards the viewer, so it is depicted slightly overlapping the head;
- separate the lower part of the beak from the upper part on both sides (on the right – barely noticeable);
- then draw a beard, from the middle of which draw a line of the neck;
- draw an oval for the body under the neck;
- draw an arched line at the back to form a tail;
- from the area of the right thigh, lower 2 closely located lines for the paw;
- at the bottom, again trace the corner of the ruler to draw the fingers at the correct angle;
- place a ruler perpendicular to it and draw a line for the third front finger;
- finish drawing the paw by drawing the back toe;
- repeat the same actions with the left side of the body;
- draw claws and bends at the end of each finger;
- in the oval add a wing in the form of a tilted letter "C" with a beveled top;
- draw the feathers in a scaly manner;
- remove extra lines.
How to paint:
- you should start with light shades, so the first color used is gray;
- they outline the shadow areas of the intended “scales”;
- The paws and beak are painted light brown;
- red - comb, area around the eye and beard;
- on top of them - white in the places of volume for highlights;
- black - eyes, feathers in small and large waves, so that white and gray parts are visible (this emphasizes the ripples);
- Make the bottom of the body and wings completely black, since there are shadows there.
After this, the drawing of a black chicken is considered complete. But in nature, there are also monochromatic, not speckled, layers. Then the head, neck and body are painted solid black, making the convex parts a little lighter.
Speckled hen
A drawing of a chicken for children most often means an image of a motley brown bird.
How to do it using just a pencil, eraser and children's oil pastels:
- Make sure that the material is non-toxic. Oil pastels from some manufacturers may release substances that can cause allergies in children.
- Construct a diagram of the drawing. You can depict a chicken pecking grain, with its head towards the viewer. To do this, draw a circle in the center of the sheet, which will later serve as the body. At the bottom - another one. This will be the head.
In the middle of it, draw a comb along its entire height, and at the very bottom, a small triangle for the beak. In the lower part of the body, add 2 wide triangles with rounded corners, and from them, build an image of the paws. Draw wings on the sides of the body, and in its upper part, a wavy, wide tail.
- Detail. On the paws add claws, stretched skin between the fingers and lines in the bend area. On the head, slightly above the beak and almost on the sides, draw eyes and separate the area around them with a line.
- Draw the feathers. Between the body and neck, tail and wings they will be smaller than the rest. In the oval depict the largest wavy lines of plumage.
- Add background. Since the chicken pecks grains, the backyard of the house is depicted around it. You can draw not only the soil, grass, fence, but also other birds or animals, but the main emphasis should be on this bird. Therefore, the colors away from it should also not be bright. Near the paws and beak, it is acceptable to depict juicy green grass.
- Color the chicken. To prevent the pastel from breaking and leaving greasy marks on top of which it will not be possible to add lines of a different color, it is applied with light strokes, slightly intensifying in the center of the line. First, the entire body, neck, head, beak and pants of the legs are evenly shaded with yellow.
The comb and wattles of the beard are marked with red, the paws, feather waves and shadows are marked with brown. Then white is used – it is drawn along some feathers, making the chicken motley. The eye is painted with black, the middle of the lower line of the wing and the area between the lower tail feathers are outlined. Following these instructions, the child will draw a motley pecking chicken.
Funny chicken
Cartoon characters are more likely to make children want to draw. The most famous cartoon with lots of funny hens is "Chicken Run".
How to depict one of them sitting in ambush with a funny expression on her face:
- Draw a wooden box with wings grasping it. In the cartoon, the plasticine roundness is characteristic only of living characters. Therefore, the box will be angular. At the bottom, a long, straight line is drawn, slightly raised to the left edge.
There they also make a downward bevel to form an angle, from the center of which they draw a perpendicular line downwards. Parallel to the main line they draw many small ones to imitate a board. Nail heads are added to the center of each edge of the box. The wings, grasped by it at a great distance, resemble large human bent fingers, only round and without nails.
- Depict the body. It is drawn in the form of an unfinished semicircle, where the right quadrant (a quarter of a circle) will be significantly larger than the left and have a notch for the tail. It turns out that the right part of the bird (and not the semicircle) will be larger. Closer to the left side of the sheet, draw a massive thigh and a small bend in the wing. In the area of the notch, draw an oval to indicate the tail.
- Add an elongated neck. From the notch, lower a perpendicular line without touching the wing area. From this point, draw a short line upward at an angle of about 45 degrees, and the second one, forming the width of the neck, is lowered slightly to the right at the same height. Between the lower points, draw a semicircle, and between the opposite ones, draw an oval of the head upward.
- Draw a face. The sides of the oval should be beveled so that the head resembles a pear. In the widened part from the center, depict the beak. To do this, draw a triangle, at the lower corners of which there is a semicircle slightly downwards to indicate the corners of the mouth.
The chicken in ambush has serious facial expressions, so the upper part of the beak is separated from the lower part by a line with lowered corners. Above the beak, 2 large circles are depicted for knitted glasses with a partition between them. Inside them - 1 more of slightly smaller sizes for the eye sockets, and at the bottom of those - another 1 for the iris with pupils.
- Add a knitted hat, aviator glasses and beads. The headdress is also pear-shaped. Its main part is drawn crosswise, along the perimeter of the muzzle - with separate stripes, and at the bottom - with braids. The eyepieces and temples of the glasses are also drawn obliquely. The beads consist of several layers of ovals, tightly adjacent to the neck.
- Mark shadows and feathers and remove auxiliary lines. Flat semicircles highlight the area of the chin, glasses, and upper thigh. Scales are drawn in several rows on the tail, back of the body, and around the neck. The sketch of a funny chicken is ready.
How to color
Since the light is coming from the right, the left side of the drawing will be darker than the right. But the muzzle and neck will be the darkest in the drawing.
The coloring process:
- use gray for the sky and nail heads;
- then mix it with brown to paint the front board;
- wait until the paints dry;
- draw thin white and black lines along the designated lines of the board;
- make the inside of the box 2 tones darker;
- paint the body and wings crimson, darkening the shadow areas, and make the arches of the tips of the feathers pale pink;
- make the lines and braids of the hat red, and its base green;
- choose pink color for glasses;
- for beads - blue;
- paint the illuminated part of the beak beige, the lower right part darker;
- the left iris of the eye is bright brown, the right one is dark brown;
- the illuminated side of the muzzle is crimson, the shadow side is 2 tones darker;
- The neck is dark crimson, and in the shadow area it is black.
It is difficult to get such a drawing of a chicken from a cartoon for children, but it is possible if all the steps are strictly followed. And this is already a task for the attentiveness of parents.
