Basic Elements of Grunge

The main elements of grunge are blots and splashes.

To create blots, you need to:

Dip the brush into the paint and let it soak completely.
With your hands hanging freely, carefully make a blooper.
Add more if necessary. If necessary, draw lines out of the blot.

To create splashes, you need to:

Pick up as much paint as possible with the brush.
Holding the paint over the canvas, shake it off.

Then the fabric can be turned over and pressed against the canvas on which the drawing is created. You can also do the opposite - press the canvas with the pattern onto the cardboard or plastic from above. However, in this case, there is a risk that the paint will spread. But even if this happens, there is a plus here - you will get a nice grunge effect. However, the print itself will be blurry.

You can paint grunge designs on canvas using paints. However, it is easier to take a photo with your phone and then process it in the appropriate app.

The resulting photo is often published on social networks. Live portraits created on canvas are often presented as gifts.

The process of creating a grunge portrait in a computer program will be done as follows:

Create a new file in A4 format.
Open the original photo. In this case, the Artemis image from Rammkitty-stock is used.
Create a copy of the original image. Name it "desaturated".
Select the following options: Edit – Transform – Scale. After these actions, you will see a frame with small cubes on the corners on the screen. You need to click on one of these cubes, and then, holding Shift, move it, thereby reducing the size of the photo.

Select the following: Image – Adjustments – Desaturate.
Select the following options: Layer – New adjustments layer – Curves. Move the top and bottom points, and then add another point in the middle of the resulting graph line. As a result, the drawing will be much brighter, its contrast will increase slightly.
Select the following options: Layer – New layer. This will create a new empty layer. It should be called “lineart”.
Using a soft round brush (9px recommended), outline the face from the photo on a new layer, focusing on the eyes and hair. Don't try to add too many details at this stage, as you're only creating a sketch.
With the "desaturated" layer selected, do the following: Layer – Layer mask – Hide all.
Using a soft round brush with 20% Flow, bring out some shadows to add volume to the hair and face.
Download velvetcat brushes.

Create a new layer and name it "shading". It should be located under the layer with the sketch.
From the loaded velvetcat brushes, take the 8th and roughly shade the shaded areas on the face and hair, relying on the previous layer. It is recommended to be "sloppy" here.

You should start with the darkest shade of gray, and then gradually move to the lightest. The strokes should be applied in the same direction as the hair. This will make it more realistic. It is not necessary to use many shades. There can be, for example, only 4.

Open a new layer, reduce the brush width to 8 pixels and use it to create shadows around the eyes, as well as in those areas where they (the shadows) should be especially noticeable.

Look at the "unsaturated" layer more often to avoid making any awkward mistakes. The linear drawing does not look very attractive. However, if you place this layer above the "shading" layer, everything will immediately become much better.

In the same technique, you should add even more details to the hair (as before, you need to stick to the lines of their styling).

Create a copy of the layer.
Perform the following actions – Image – Adjustments – Desaturate. Hide the layer from which the copy was made.
Select the Image – Adjustment – Brightness/Contrast options. You need to change the brightness until the image becomes almost black.
In the color range (Color range) select the black area. Press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to copy and paste the selected color. The resulting image should be moved behind the head. This layer can be named "Splatter 1".
Open Red Blotchies.

Move the layer so that it is above the shading layer.
Make the Desaturate layer less saturated. Select the Miltiply mode and move the texture until the best position is found.
Add Layer masks. Using a soft brush, you need to run it along the chin and soften its edges in those places where it overlaps the hair.
Take the Black hole texture from tiger-stock.
Move the texture layer to a position above the curves and set the mode to Multiply.
Adjust the size and position until the texture fits in well with the environment. To do this, select the following options: Edit – Adjustments – free transform.
Add a Layer mask. The areas behind the eyes need to be hidden. This will make them stand out better.

Take the 180 swirls texture from the same tiger-stock.
Using Magic wand, select the empty area on the top right. You need to press Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+V, select Edit – Transform – Free Transform and change the size (reduce the size and rotate the selection).
Create a new layer and move it to the top position (name it “hair shadow texture”).
Using a 22mm brush with a diameter of 93, create textured areas over the hair and splashes.
With the 8th brush, remove some areas so that other layers are slightly visible. Using the same technique, similar texture is added to the remaining areas of the face. It is recommended to vary the width of the brush.
Use the Blackhole layer. It needs to be multiplied and placed above the Curves layer.

Apply the mask to the area behind your face and to the area that covers your neck. As a result, nothing black should show through the shadow layer.
The combination of keys Ctrl, Shift and N creates a new layer. Click on it and select the following options: Image – Apply image. This will create a merged layer. You can call it “Morged”.
Save file in PSD format.

Pictures drawn or created in graphic editors in the grunge style, reject all generally accepted norms. This is what makes these works of art so unusual. The realistic look of such a portrait is acquired due to the imitation of torn paper, stains, handwritten texts, patterns, textures.

The background is intentionally made dull, its colors are muted. The picture can be black and white, colored, or gray with multi-colored elements.
