Soap bubbles sold in stores often cause allergies in children. The solution for parents is to make a solution from available ingredients at home. In this case, you can be sure of the composition, and also save money on the purchase for entertainment.
What determines the quality of bubbles
In order for the quality of inflatable bubbles to be equal to factory-made ones, you need to know some secrets of making bright balloons. For convenience, they are presented in the form of a table.

Factors Affecting Bubble Quality | ||
Bubble property | Ingredient | How does it affect |
inflatability | water | The cleaner the water, the easier it is to inflate the balloons. For better quality you need to take water:
|
strength | laundry soap | Adding soap to the solution increases the elasticity of the balls. |
durability |
| Adding syrup and letting it sit for more than 12 hours allows the bubbles to stay open longer. wall thickness glycerin The substance makes the walls of the balls thicker. |
size | liquid soap | Liquid soap-based formulations produce the largest bubbles. |
quantity | shampoo | To blow out more balloons, shampoo is used instead of soap. |
Rainbow streaks in soap balls appear on thick walls due to the refraction of light rays. As moisture evaporates from the surface, the shell becomes thinner. Therefore, iridescent patterns disappear. The thickness of the wall, as well as the speed of water evaporation, depend on glycerin: it covers the ball with another shell, slowing down the drying of the bubble.
Useful tips
You can make soap bubbles at home from clean water and a surfactant solution. These are the main ingredients. But to make them last longer, inflate more and bring joy to children, it is important to use little tricks when making them.
Below are some tips to help you blow out big, bright balloons:
- It is better to add a cleaning solution with a minimum amount of impurities (fragrances, dyes) to the bubble solution;
- if there is no purified water, then you need to boil tap water;
- for small children, a more diluted composition is suitable, because it is easier to inflate the balloons;
- the prepared solution needs to be left to sit for 12-24 hours so that the soap bubbles become stronger;
- It is easier to blow bubbles in a damp room than in a dusty, dry room;
- The right straw will inflate more balloons.
In addition to straws, they use their hands, a wire twisted into a loop, and tools from dad's workshop that have a round hole. But to make the game safe, you need to follow some safety rules. They are described below.
Safety rules
Making soap bubbles at home can be fun if you involve children in making the solution. You just need to keep an eye on them, anticipating dangerous situations for health in advance.
What to pay attention to when making and playing with soap bubbles:
- Small children should not be left alone, unattended, to play with a surfactant solution, because they will want to taste it or treat each other;
- to inflate, you need to give children plastic straws or special circles on a stick made from ready-made store-bought bubbles;
- you need to make sure that the child does not wipe his nose, eyes, or mouth with his hands wet with the solution;
- It is necessary to explain to the child that he cannot run with a jar of soap solution, otherwise it will splash;
- You need to show the children where to blow to make a soap bubble;
- You should not blow bubbles in other people's faces: the child should be reminded of this, explaining why this should not be done;
- If the solution gets into your eyes, rinse them with plenty of water;
- After playing, be sure to wash your hands and then put the cutlery away together.
Despite the large number of safety rules, they are based on one thing: when playing with potentially dangerous substances, you must use common sense. Then there will be no unforeseen situations. And to start these games, you need to prepare a solution according to one of the recipes below.
Classic recipe from laundry soap
You can make soap bubbles at home using the safest recipe.
It is simple and requires a minimum of ingredients:
- 0.5 cups of water (purified, boiled or distilled);
- 10 g of laundry soap;
- 30 g glycerin.
Preparation of solution:
- Grate the soap on a fine grater.
- Dissolve grated soap in water.
- The solution is passed through a fine sieve or folded gauze.
- Glycerin is added to the filtrate.
The composition is ready for use.
If the balloons burst too quickly, add a little more glycerin.
Recipe with glycerin
Making soap bubbles at home is even better than buying them in a store. They become stronger because the solution is based on glycerin. This substance makes the walls of the soap balls so strong that they bounce off your hands, springing and colliding with each other.
To prepare the soap base, you need to take:
- purified water – 300 ml;
- thick detergent (Fairy or a quality analogue) – 100 ml;
- glycerin – 50 ml.
How to mix:
- Heat water to 30-400C.
- Carefully dissolve the detergent, trying to avoid foaming.
- Pour in glycerin and stir again carefully.
- Place in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
- Pour the mixture into glasses and hand them out to those who want to blow bubbles.
If there is too much glycerin, the mixture will be too thick, which will make it difficult for a small child to make soap balls. In order to try a new recipe, you need to take the ingredients in proportionally smaller quantities than recommended by the recipe. If the result is satisfactory, you can prepare a full portion.
From shampoo or shower gel
For the mixture you need to stock up on the following ingredients:
- pure water – 50 ml;
- sugar – 1/3 tsp;
- well-foaming shampoo – 20-30 ml.
Prepare the solution:
- Pour sugar into heated water and dissolve it.
- Add shampoo, stir, trying not to create foam.
- Let the mixture sit for 4-8 hours.
From bath foam
A simple recipe that allows you to make bubbles in no time.
Take:
- purified water – 1 part;
- bath foam – 3 parts.
Mix the ingredients, pour into a glass or bottle. Give to the child to blow bubbles.
Colored bubbles
To amuse children, you can prepare multi-colored soap solutions in several cups. Then the blown bubbles will be more interesting.
Attention! When bursting, the multi-colored balls will leave drops of paint on surfaces. Therefore, it is better to play with them at a picnic or by the river.
To make the mixtures, use gouache paints (watercolors or acrylics are not suitable).
Ingredients:
- water – 500 ml;
- gouache paint – depending on the desired saturation;
- sugar – 2 tbsp;
- thick shower gel or bath foam – 150 ml.
Preparation of the composition:
- Dissolve the paint.
- Add sugar and stir.
- Add soap base, stir.
The mixture is ready. For games with colored soap balls, it is better to wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. And you definitely shouldn’t blow colored bubbles in an apartment after renovation.
With ammonia
Ammonia has a strong, pungent smell. When working with it, you need to open a window to let fresh air into the room. It is better not to involve a child in preparing a solution containing ammonia.
To make a soap base, you will need:
- clean water – 0.5 cups;
- glycerin – 50 g;
- liquid soap – 15 ml;
- ammonia – 3 drops.
How to mix:
- Heat water to 40-500C.
- Dissolve the soap, being careful not to create foam.
- Add a drop of ammonia, stir, add glycerin.
After cooling, the liquid can be given to the child to blow bubbles.
Dishwashing liquid solution
For better bubble quality, you need to use dishwashing liquid, which, according to the advertisement, is enough for 1 bottle instead of 4 regular ones.
Ingredients:
- water – 100 g;
- dishwashing liquid – 3 ml;
- glycerin – 30 ml.
Preparation:
- Mix water with dishwashing liquid, avoiding foaming.
- Pour in glycerin and mix thoroughly again.
The composition is ready for use. If the balloons burst too quickly, slightly increase the amount of glycerin in the solution.
Washing powder solution
To prepare the solution according to this recipe, you will need to spend several days.
For this you will need:
- water – 300 g;
- glycerin – 100 ml;
- ammonia – 9 or 10 drops;
- washing powder – 23-25 g.
Prepare in the following manner:
- Clean water is heated, washing powder is dissolved. The best solution would be to use a detergent for washing children's clothes, which does not contain fragrances and dyes.
- Add ammonia and glycerin and mix carefully.
- Leave the mixture for 2 days, covered with a lid.
- Filter through cotton wool or gauze folded several times.
- Keep the pure mixture in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
When using ammonia, you should turn on the exhaust fan or open a window to provide fresh air.
Bubble recipe for the little ones
To prevent foam from bursting soap bubbles from accidentally getting into a child’s eyes and causing pain, a mixture is prepared according to a special recipe.
To make it, you will need:
- purified water – 500 g;
- baby shampoo "no tears" - 250 ml;
- sugar – 3 tbsp.
Cooking instructions:
- Heat water to 40-45 0C.
- Pour in the shampoo and stir gently to avoid foaming.
- Leave the solution to infuse for 24 hours.
- Add sugar and dissolve it.
- Pour the mixture into containers for children.
For better quality of the balls, you need to take a good hypoallergenic shampoo, thick and without dyes, fragrances, and other unnecessary components.
Recipe for extra strong bubbles
To obtain bubbles that are as strong as balls, you need to take the following ingredients:
- water – 800 ml;
- glycerin – 350-400 ml;
- laundry soap – 200 g;
- sugar – 80 g.
Now prepare the solution:
- Grate the soap and pour warm water over it.
- When the soap has dissolved, add sugar, glycerin, mix well.
- The mixture is ready. You can play.
To make a smaller volume of liquid, divide the amount of each component by the same number. So, dividing by 2, you can halve the final amount.
Original recipe: solution with syrup
First
In order for the bubbles to be elastic, after mixing the ingredients, the solution must be left to stand. The holding time is 4-12 hours.

To prepare the soap liquid you will need:
- water (distilled or bottled) – 600 ml;
- thick dishwashing liquid or shampoo – 200 ml;
- corn syrup – 80 ml.
Preparation:
- Dishwashing liquid or shampoo is poured into the water.
- Stir until smooth, avoiding foaming.
- Pour in corn syrup, stir again. Done.
The games can begin.
Recipe for making a composition for large bubbles
To create large, voluminous, human-sized bubbles like the showman, you need to take the right soap mixture.
And to make it, you need to prepare the following components:
- purified water – 800 ml;
- thick dishwashing liquid – 200 ml;
- glycerin – 150 ml;
- sugar – 50 g;
- gelatin – 30-40 g.
Step by step instructions:
- Soak gelatin according to the instructions printed on the package.
- Strain it.
- Mix with sugar, melt in 800 g of water, avoiding bringing to a boil.
- Cool, mix in detergent and glycerin.
- The liquid is ready. It needs to be poured into a wide container so that it is convenient to dip large frames for pulling out soap bubbles.
The soap bubbles will be strong, so you don't need to blow them: they are pulled out with your fingers from a frame soaked in a basin. You can quickly swing the mold so that the air flow itself creates a bubble.
Figured soap bubbles
Prepare a solution from:
- water – 0.5 l;
- glycerin – 0.5 l;
- laundry soap – 200 ml;
- sugar – 100 g.
The components are mixed and left to infuse under the lid for 12-15 hours. The solution is strong, so blowing it out will be a bit difficult. You can take a large frame, dip it in the liquid, and then wave it, allowing the air flow to fill the bubble itself.
Unbursting bubbles
It is difficult to make soap bubbles at home so that they do not burst when they come into contact with surrounding objects: it takes time and patience.
You will need the following components:
- water – 1.5 l;
- glycerin – 200 ml;
- sugar – 100 g;
- gelatin – 100 g;
- soap – 50 ml.
Step by step instructions:
- Heat water to dissolve sugar until it reaches 400C.
- Add instant gelatin, reduce heat.
- Stir continuously until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Do not bring the liquid to a boil.
- Let cool.
- Add soap, glycerin, mix gently.
- Leave the mixture to infuse under the lid for 14 hours.
Check the finished solution for bubble resistance to bursting. To do this, inflate a bubble, then touch it with a wet finger. The balloon should not burst. If this happens, add glycerin to the mixture.
How and what to blow soap bubbles with
The tools used to blow bubbles are classically straws or plastic circles on sticks made from store-bought bubbles.
But there are other devices that are also suitable for blowing soap balls:
- a cocktail straw cut into a fringe at one end;
- To blow out a large number of balloons in one breath, you need to tape several tubes together into one bundle.
To create large bubbles, use:
- plastic bottle with the bottom cut off;
- household funnel;
- carpet beater (it is dipped in the solution and waved);
- a loop of fishing line attached to a stick.
Other accessories:
- for special occasions, they create handmade frames for soap bubbles from wire, decorating the handles with beads and figurines;
- absolutely huge bubbles are made using a gymnastic hoop (the solution is poured into an inflatable pool);
- simply with your hands, connecting the tips of your index fingers and thumbs.
These are, of course, not all the devices with which soap balls are inflated. If you use your imagination, you can come up with your own, original, way to blow them. A tennis racket, for example. Or something else: the main thing is to turn on your imagination.
Optimal conditions
To keep soap balloons from bursting for longer, they need to be released under certain conditions.
If the event takes place on the street, then it should be remembered that:
- dusty winds should be avoided - sand grains will destroy the walls of the ball, causing it to burst;
- air temperature above 250C is an enemy for the balls, because it quickly evaporates the water on their surface, causing them to collapse;
- dry air is not the best option for blowing bubbles because moisture evaporates faster;
- It is optimal to blow soap balls in high humidity (after rain, in the morning, after watering the area) at a temperature of up to 250C.
For the home, the optimal conditions will be the absence of drafts and flying dust. It is also better not to launch multi-colored soap balls at home, because they leave paint on the surfaces of the apartment when they burst. It is better to blow such balls outside, wearing something that is easy to wash.
Fun with bubbles
Besides just blowing bubbles, you can have fun using them as a tool. Here are some ideas.
Abstraction
To paint a modern abstract painting, you need to take:
- paper or cardboard;
- bubble solution;
- tubes;
- watercolor or acrylic.
Old clothes that you don't mind dyeing will come in handy. The soap solution is poured into cups, adding a different color of paint to each of them.
Then carefully blow bubbles of different colors and sizes, landing them on a sheet of paper. Such a picture is framed. It will serve as a relevant modern picture decorating the interior.
Balloon Hunt
For entertainment, you will need to put woolen mittens or gloves on the palms of all those who want to participate. The thing is that when in contact with wool, the soap ball does not burst, but lies, swinging, on the surface.
The same thing happens if the bubble falls on a wool carpet. In this case, you won't even need gloves, and even pets can take part in the hunt. The one who catches or bursts the balloon faster is a good boy.
If it's winter outside, you need to go outside with a solution of soap bubbles made from shampoo. The temperature in the yard should be below -100C so that frost patterns start to appear on the air bubbles, like on a window. The ball itself takes on a "snowy" hue.
Small in big
To do this trick, you need at least two people. One uses a straw, soaked in soapy water along its entire length except the mouth end. The other takes a tool for blowing large bubbles: a funnel, a plastic bottle, or a hula hoop.
Having blown a large bubble, they hold it, and at this time everyone who has straws dips them in the soap mixture, carefully pierces the large bubble, and blows smaller bubbles there.
Man in a Ball
For this performance you will need to prepare a soap mixture for particularly strong bubbles, containing a large amount of glycerin and sugar.
In addition, the following accessories are required:
- inflatable children's pool;
- gymnastics hoop.
Prepare enough liquid to cover the bottom of the pool. The hoop should be completely wet with it. Place the hoop in the center, into which the child steps. After this, the ring is slowly raised, enveloping the baby in a transparent wall.
Soap bubbles created at home will bring more joy than a purchased bottle. By preparing mixtures of various densities, colors, and quantities, you can make an ideal recipe that will fully meet your expectations.
